- The chief executive of the Night Time Industries Association has told Sky News that banning smoking in pub gardens could lead to further closures of venues.
Michael Kill was reacting to reports that Labour are planning to ban smoking in some outdoor spaces.
A new ban would apply to England however the Welsh government said it would work jointly with the UK government when new smoking legislation is introduced.

Pubs are far too closely linked to traditional British culture to have any chance of survival. Starmer will obviously want to consign them to the history books.
Interesting view!
no, I just don't want to pay £5 for a pint I can buy in a Can for £1 and then I have to deal with drunken coked up Gammons starting fights for no reason and if I want to smoke I have go out in the rain??? nahhhh I'll stay at home it's a lot better and more fun
@@PaulBadman Unfortunately they will not be £1 for long. They will tax them like in Glasgow. Though I love drinking at home , with all the entertainment on tap. The village pubs around here went downhill after the lockdowns. £6 for 3x 8.2 Henry Westons cider with clubcard :) Then some cans alongside
Drinking alcohol and having a smoke and socialising with friends in a pub really pisses off Muslims so Starmer want to ban it.😢
Pubs will still survive, just without the smoking section
Personally my worry would be leaving a bar in a city and safely walking home right now, not passive smoking
Excellent point.
Well said but to something about public safety in cities would require thought, a plan, commitment, effort and resilience in policing, the judicial system and education. Far easier for a govt to just do nanny state options unfortunately.

Ban authoritarianism in government, goodbye pubs
Is it just pubs or outdoors everywhere?
Not smoking is authoritarian apparently. There's a lot wrong with this government but it's not banning smoking.
@@AliAlice3 that's exactly what they are doing, no doubt Starmer will bring back the failed Tory attempt to have an age range ban on smoking.
In an ideal world it would be amazing for people not to smoke. But I doubd banning smoking will solve anything. Not to mention his true intentions behind it is to bury pubs and anything British for good!
There's no "could" about it, pubs and bars WILL close and is exactly what they want.

So they stay in the pub for longer and develop an addiction to alcohol and become a burden on society as well. At least smokers dont shout abuse at shop windows.
Never smoked in my life and hate smoke but this new Labour government are a joke. If people smoke or want to they should be allowed outside what’s the issue with it? And Starmer bangs on about getting the economy right he will destroy pubs and restaurants if he enforces this
Agreed. Smokers just won't want to go to bars and pubs.
Starmer and his ilk want to get rid of pubs .
Starmer would just convert all the closed pubs into Mosques.............!!!!
is this really their priority ?
Am an ex smoker and the best thing the government did was ban smoking inside and especially in pubs and bars ,but if people want to smoke and there's an area for them to smoke that's fine by me it's there choice but they must be respectful to non smokers outside as well.
Government needs to stfu and not get fkd up real quick
Shall we ban Alcohol because that costs the NHS more money than smoking does. Or does that bring in too much money???

Plenty more preventable deaths with cars shall we ban those too?
The amount of people smoking is at an all time low, we've already been forced out of pubs, restaurants and any other indoor place, now they want to take the wet and windy half sheltered spots away? Fine we'll just walk down the road a bit and throw our cigarette ends on the street or down a drain instead of using the designated ashtrays, great thinking PM...
He says its about health and cites the cost of smoking deaths but realistically how many non-smokers get cancer because they sat near a smoker outside a pub for 15 minutes? Whole thing is a joke.
Why not close the factories that produce cigarettes and tobacco if it’s that bad for people.
Hes not interested in savig lives his agenda is to stop anything that people enjoy 😡😡
Exactly. This will save zero lives. Smokers are already at risk wherever they smoke. Non-smokers are never going to get cancer because they sat near a smoker outside for 15 minutes. This about control.
Your cherry picking what freedom your willing to loose/
What is next?
Addiction isn't freedom
Quit smoking! Best decision I made years ago!
Meanwhile people are waiting 18 weeks to see a fuckin specialist on the nhs, priorities eh
l keep on hearing about the cost smoking has to the NHS...
lts a drop in the ocean compared to the cost of alcohol violence and health issues ...
l smoke...BUT l don't drink...
LEAVE my personal choices alone...
Seeing as hospitality is the UKs third largest employer and tobacco brings in billions in tax, this seems ill thought through like much of Starmers recent actions.
I very much suspect vaping isn't covered by this.
2tier Kier at it again, he needs to GO!!!
Government overreach AGAIN!!!
How about designated smoking times in pub gardens? not during the day when eating, maybe only in the evenings?
They will just ban outright. There was that argument for some pubs with good extraction systems fitted could allow it inside in 2007 (like in Europe) But then some lawyer argued that it was discriminating against those that could not have them fitted . Same old same old, rather than sense
Why are smoking-related deaths such a huge burden to the NHS? The State stands to gain financially from early deaths not to mention their huge take from tobacco taxes. This is just another example of Starmer's determination to undermine personal freedom.
And realistically, how many people died because they sat near a smoker outside a pub? Zero.
This will save zero lives. Smokers are already at risk wherever they smoke anyway. This is just an excuse to bash pubs.
How about let people have autonomy ....
The governent isnt our mother or father .
Ive never smoked but i think its ludicrous to ban smoking outside ....
Wonder where all the my body my choice people are ?
Meanwhile everyone is getting fat, costing the NHS more than smoking does.
If this government really wanted to tackle the NHS burden they would start banning the sale of alcoholic drinks. These latter cause more illness, brain damage car accidents absenteeism immune system weakness than all other causes put together. But alcohol is big business, and of course the majority of MPS plus the civil service are suffering some level of addiction to alcohol
Been spouting this for years...no images of diseased livers, drink driving accidents etc plastered on alcohol bottles..
Prohibition doesn't work regardless, the government should just mind it's own business and tackle the problems that the British public actually care about.
Dont worry, Starmer will get around to restrictions on alcohol soon enough.
No smoker would follow this stupid law.
They will all just cobtinnue to use the outside spaces as normal and why not??
Are they really going to arrest everyone in every outside space for smoking OUTSIDE??
There aren't the resources available to enforce this in any case.
Good luck with that one..
I'm pretty sure Keir wouldn't like it if I banned him from drinking alcohol. Hypocrite.
An alcohol ban sounds a helluva lot more constructive 🤔
I personally believe the government should not be able to make such a change without a referendum. They have no public mandate.
With the new kind of people taking over who needs pubs
In sorry isnt a pub private property ?
I'm concerned for my safety when I walk anywhere, day or night. But yeah the smoking. Jesus christ.
Comrade Starmer trying to go after pubs that won't end well. Give them an inch they'll go a mile
Pubs were all supposed to have shut down when the smoking ban on in pub smoking was introduced.
Didn’t happen though did it?
But the smokers can walk down the street smoking?
Only happens if the publicans and restaurants let it happen.
I am a non smoker. And I have zero sympathy with the pubs that went out of business on the indoor ban, because they chose to suck up to smokers for decades, subjecting us to harm and the stink in our clothes.
This is a step too far. They need to address the supply side. Why not just stop supermarkets selling them for a start.
Instead, if he is so bothered about the NHS, he should enforce a rule that any smoking related surgery or medical care has to be paid for by the patient as it is self inflicted.
People who panic about this don't know that other countries like Poland have complete ban for smoking in public. In Japan they have these closed boxes where all smokers go. And yet people there continue to live their lives, shocking
smoking doesn’t cause car crashes, smoking doesn’t cause physical violence, smoking doesn’t cause blackouts- if the government really wants to attack the working class and limit access to a dose of serenity in a dying country, pick the more problematic option: Alcohol
I am a smoker and I've been to pubs that have banned smoking in the beer garden or on outside patio areas. My local pub will only allow smoking at the front of the building and not on the nice patio area at the side. The reason given is usually because people eating outside might not want smoke wafting over to them but often there is no one there. I'll stand in the car park or on the footpath if I have to but mostly I avoid places that impose too many restrictions. Often the best place to be is outside with the other smokers because inside the pub is often empty.
The smoking ban will kill the pub industry and there will be no more pubs in the U.K.
Freedom comes with responsibility, especially when it affects others. I made a conscious choice not to smoke to avoid the health risks associated with it. However, when someone smokes near me in public, I’m involuntarily exposed to those same risks through passive smoking. It’s challenging to confront people about this, as it’s not practical to go around asking everyone to refrain from smoking in public.
That’s why I support the smoking ban. It’s not just about exercising one’s freedom to smoke; it’s also about respecting others’ rights to a healthy environment. Exposing others to the dangers of smoking, such as lung cancer and other serious health issues, because of personal choices is not only inconsiderate but infringes on the freedoms of those who choose not to smoke. Protecting public health should take precedence over individual habits that harm others.
The people for this ban are middle class people who don’t even go out to pubs. This would be the final nail in the coffin for hospitality. Which is only just going to put more young people out of work. It’s a pointless policy, countries with the lowest rates of smoking don’t even have these sorts of draconian laws.
Not just closure of bar's but also small coffee shops and restaurants.
If your gonna ban smoking, why not ban drinking as that cost's the NHS and DWP, and also why spend more public money to Man this Policy.
Pubs were already affected when the previous smoking ban came in to effect, with many closing as a result. This latest idea from ‘I’ll do anything to affect British people and British businesses’ Starmer will see more pubs close.
The smoking ban will also affect hotels. It will totally destroy the Hospitality industry. At least it will free up more hotel rooms for immigrants!
No one should be forcing health onto other grown adults. We are not living in a free country.
We got forced outside to smoke now they want to take that.. NO WAY.. Breathing tax incoming......
So "if" these measures are brought in to reduce the areas where people can smoke and ultimately in time reduce tobacco products from being available to the public, how much tax revenue is going to be lost ? What policies will be put in place to recover the loss of income to the Government ? More tax rises ?
The amount of tax the government have put on cigarettes more than pays for our health care , in fact we all should all have a penthouse at the hospital, and 24 hour care
Exactly we pay healthcare for alcoholics and obese patients, too.
they shouldn’t have to advertise smoking in the 60’s on first place
Absolutely pathetic the smoking ban has killed the pub trade and there still moaning either don’t go outside or don’t go to the pub. Labour brought in the ban and a labour government trying to stop outside smoking Kier starmer is just getting more hated every day
Well, the government have just made it clear that they don’t want us to think or say what we want. So smoking outside doesn’t really make much difference.
I’m not a smoker, but I couldn’t be any more appalled by what the government are doing in general.
In other words Starmer is saying he doesn't like it so no one is allowed to do it
Pubs have mostly working class customers so it is no surprise that Starmer is putting them in danger.
First the pensioners and now the pubs!
Who will be next in Starmer`s great realignment?
FFS ban gas and diesel burning vehicles first. Talk about the parable of the mote and the beam. The real villain goes unexamined.
😂what wrong in ciggarette
Sunak policy never will work
Absolutly joke
There are far more important things to deal with in the country than this annoying from the government. The police will be thrilled to deal with arguments in pub gardens.
The last smoking ban didn't kill pubs and this won't either.
The thing killing pubs is extortionate rates.
It’s a mixture of both no doubt that the original smoking ban killed off a lot of pubs
No it wont close pubs ,it will make the gardens a more pleasant place to sit without having someone else disgusting habit drifting into other people's space .
By his logic, pubs wont be around for years to come anyway then. 180k people are quitting each year.
Smoking is decreasing year on year, even by 2030 it would be very low at the rate we are going...
