  • I think I found now which one it is on the inside! Just saying. Hehe. But yeah in this video I play start playing around with the Casio CK-500. Want to get to know it a bit before I go inside and make modifications! Last in my series on the CK keyboards from casio. A strange and kinda gimmicky lineup of very 80s ideas. I like it!

    YO BEEN WAITING FOR THIS! I kind of want to see one of these with one side modified into a 4-track, and the other acting as the “master tape”, so basically the same thing as an OP-1. Should be possible with stock heads if it can record in stereo.

    • @RaverOperatorGeeza
      @RaverOperatorGeeza 4 месяца назад +5

      Yesssssssssssssss! I hadn't thought about that, but since you mention it, I'd love to see that too!!!
      Great idea 👍💡

    • @SimonTheMagpie
      @SimonTheMagpie  4 месяца назад +18

      I have never added tape heads before 😅 but if someone can help me then yeah I think you on to something! Since it has a balance knob + stereo/mono option I bet you could record to one side and then overdub on the other side already. I’ll include this in my experimentation to test list for starters!

    • @ringsystemmusic
      @ringsystemmusic 4 месяца назад +2

      @@SimonTheMagpie the trick with 4-tracks is that they normally only use stereo heads- each tape gets used only once, but with all the tracks in use. Instead of 1r 1l *flip* 2r 2l it's 1r1l2r2l. you'll have to completely rewire the tape machine portion but it's honestly worth it for a project this silly.

    Great video Simon! Love how you just dive in and always find ways of being creative with these oddball devices. And that piece at the end was so trippy!
    The CK500 almost certainly uses the same Vowel Consonant sound engine as many other early to mid 80s Casio models, such as the MT65/ 68, MT400V/ CT410V, CT405 etc. and a whole number of other models all sharing the same/ similar NEC LSI sound and rhythm chips. You'll find the same distinctly named presets in them such as Cosmic Tone and Funny, and they'll also have Pipe organ, Reed organ, Flute, Violin and Electric piano among the preset tones. The rhythms will have among them Rock, Disco, 16 Beat, along with the ubiquitous Bosanova. And yes, the drums are analogue and will have their own separate circuit board inside (very easy to mod and bend).
    As for modding the tape part, first thing that springs to mind is to make it into a Delia Derbyshire machine. For those that don't know, Delia worked for the BBC Radiophonic Workshop and was a true pioneer of electronic music. Check out her videos where she was making incredible sounds using multiple tape loops way back in the 1960s.
    I'm thinking that if you can get both tapes to play simultaneously (iirc, only one deck can record), you can make a tape loop to play in deck one, then make a recordable tape loop for deck 2. If you can modify deck 2 to record AND play simultaneously, you could feed the multiple parts of the CK into it and build up the loop like a Looper pedal. Might need quite a lot of tinkering to make it do this, plus would only work if the record deck had separate erase and record heads so that you would be able to disable the erase part and allow it to keep adding recordings and feed back onto itself. The results would be "out there".
    Then again, your improvisation at the end of the video was already achieving "out there". Just imagine how that would sound if you were recording/ looping it and feeding it back onto itself!

    Oh yeah, defeat that function switch so all functions are live at the same time; two stereo inputs via the cassettes and another via the radio by using a simple car FM transmitter. Alternately, you could use a hobby AM transmitter and get all the bizarre interference sounds, off-tuned sidebanding, etc. Lots of possibilities there..

    That antenna at the back is screaming to be connected to a theremin. All you would need is a theremin circuit board and a volume plate which could easily be mounted externally or if you’re so inclined mounted internally in front of the speaker. It would be interesting to see if the magnetic field of the speakers coil would have any effect on the volume plate.

    Soooo love your work I used to play around with odd ways of recording and mixing with tape in the late 80's as a boy i had a tape head screwed so a piece of wood and some cut tape samples on celotape and would scratch over the mix controlling the speed with a repurposed volume comptroller :)

    Wow, what a crazy blast from the past!! I haven't heard those canned rhythm and chord progressions since I was a kid staying with my grandparents, where they had an electronic organ. We didn't have much to do back then, so I spent way too long goofing around with it, trying to play along with those notes and rhythms. Thanks for the reminder, my grandparents have been gone for many years, and I haven't relived those days for a very long time.

    MT-68? Sound almost identical. MT-68 has an arpeggio selector switch along with the bass and chord accompaniment, though, so not exactly the same. I have heard that some of the casios nerfed their capabilities even with the hardware, so maybe this is one of those cases? But why nerf a flagship?
