A female fronted Van Halen in the Van Halen multiverse… and a few others who were offered the job including Daryl Hall and Steve Perry? Find out next.

Oh, what might have been… Coming off 1984, Van Halen was at their commercial peak. Everyone knows what happened next. Diamond Dave went his own way starting a solo career and releasing some cover songs, and trying to do a movie that never really went anywhere. He’d eventually hook up with Virtuoso Steve Vai and Van Halen brought on Sammy Hagar and got to work on 5150, their first #1 album. But today’s episode explores what might’ve been. Eddie had several singers in mind before he brought Sammy on. Including the Patty Smyth of Scandal who had just bombed the top of the charts with the Warrior. Eddie actually offered the role to her… He also had an idea to do an album with many different singers. He really wanted to work with Daryl Hall and Joe Cocker, amongst others.
Coming up an insightful interview with Patty Smyth about Eddie Van Halen making an offer that no singer could refuse. She tells how she met him in the first place and why the female-fronted Van Halen didn’t happen. We also have Sammy Hagar’s take on that time frame. It’s Van Halen the best of infinite worlds. What might’ve been with some great interviews, coming up next.
Speaking of the possible Van Halen multiverse… here are all the people that were rumored to be considered for the singer position before Sammy joined up. Daryl Hall. And actually, Daryl Hall confirmed the story in an interview with New York radio, when asked if the rumors were true. Daryl responded with this quote: "Actually, yes,""I knew those guys really well. We actually shared some people: crew, and things like that. And Eddie came to a show with Valerie Bertinelli, This goes back, you know? And David had just left the band. And Eddie said, 'Do you wanna join Van Halen, man?' He was half joking, but I think he was serious. I really do believe he was serious. And I took it seriously. I went, 'Meh, I think not. I think I've got my own stuff going on.’"
Apparently, Steve Perry was offered the gig at a point when things were unresolved with Journey.
Poll: Who is your pick for greatest "no holds barred" rock singer of the 80s?
Tough one: Rik Emmett
Would have to answer as always: Klaus Meine
Bruce Dickinson
Dee Snider
Sammy Hagar
Sammy Hagar
Lita Ford
David Coverdale
I met Patty Smyth after a show near Buffalo and she told me because of her Van Halen connection becoming more and more legendary she’s considering putting a couple of Van Halen songs into her set now
I would be interested in hearing that.
I would love to see her in concert.
Love this idea!
Love her & love VH, so bring it ON!
Seriously?
Eddie was so verasitile , I think doing what Carlos did and have multiple singers sing on an album would have been awesome, I would have loved to hear what he would do with just a piano tune and to incorporate Cello and any other instrument he would play. A true musical genius.
I would have loved it if Van Halen did, say, 5150 with a guest artist on every song.
Totally agree!
I had seen an interview with EVH where he had talked about this, as well as considering Darryl Hall, Steve Perry, Dio and Ozzy Osbourne. I think her voice would have meshed well with the band, but Sammy fit like a glove and brought his guitar skills as well. Great interview Adam.
Thanks my friend.
Imagine if Ozzy or Dio joined they probably would have made Van Halen into a heavy metal act. Steve Perry or Darryl Hall would likely steer them into AOR.
They really needed a dynamic singer. Sammy was the perfect fit.
I don't know how Ed would've handled Ozzy if he couldn't handle DLR's flakyness and strange behavior.
@@ProfessorofRock definitely a really cool interview and the juxtaposition of going from Diamond Dave to her would've been a real treat.
Daryl Hall can really rock. I am a big fan of Live At Daryl's House. He plays music with so many different musicians. I am glad history turned out the way it did.
Live At Daryl's House is totally awesome!
@@Code.Name.V 👍😊
What I like most about Live at Daryl's it's for the most part live performances
Live at Daryl’s House is super fun to watch! He is a really personable guy and I hope I can come to his house and rock with him one day. 😊
@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980 Daryls House was my favorite show. I am happy I was able to see Daryl and John Oats in concert in the early 90s. It was a great show!
Man, I can still remember the day I heard that "The Red Rocker" was joining Van Halen!! I was so pumped because I really liked both of them, it was like the creation of a "Super Group" before there was such a thing, I think.
BUT I can't keep from wondering what Patty Smyth would have done with the band. I'm thinking it would have been something special. We will never know....
What if Eddie ousted the whole band and replaced them with all legendary singers like Patty and Daryl?
Hagar was much older than the rest of Van Halen, so he brought maturity to the group and he is a great songwriter. Smyth is incredible and I'd have loved to have seen what they might've produced together. However, she mentioned that she'd have missed writing her other hits had she joined Van Halen, and Van Halen would've missed the hits Hagar brought. As much as I like Roth, the group seemed to do more cover songs.
Roth got the band off the ground and their 1978 cover of You Really Got Me broke them into the mainstream for their originals but Hagar got the group to mature a bit.
You can really tell the difference in subject matter between Roth and Hagar. Roth's sounds like a horny teenager, and Sammy sounds more introspective.
@@Thomasmemoryscentral ..Lol what's maturity got to do with being a rock singer in the 80s where the moto was sex drugs and R&R ...hahahahaha
@@williamwilkinson6665 Have you listened to Sammy and Dave's respective songs? It's night and day.
@@timsgotissues3581 yeah I like Dave's stuff better......
Wow, thanks. After seeing Patty at a Hall of Fame show, I thank you for your interview with her. You totally changed my image of her. Great job!
Very interesting interview with Patty. She asks a great question about where the new guitar heroes going to come from. You could say the same of drummers and bass players, too. Musicians have been largely replaced by technology. With sampling, synthesizers and other computer tools, you can make a record in the comfort of your own home without anyone ever playing an instrument. Thanks, Adam!
That was a great interview, but she's not familiar with Nuno Bettencourt or Paul Gilbert or Guthrie Govan or John Petrucci? Guitar heroes abound. There are kids all over the world who can play anything Van Halen ever did, that's not an exaggeration either. The level of skill out there now is unbelievable.
And AI is gonna render every human musician obsolete, sadly.
We still have Slash.
@@andsoitgoes2177 just saw a kid outside Pittsburgh, Pa nail that solo from the first Van Halen album.
Really makes you wonder about so many what-ifs in music history, and how different history would be if they came to reality. Cheers as always!
You mean like if Led Zeppelin carried on with Jason Bonham and they made some new music?
@@stephenbrown4211 Or if Jimi had of joined ELP & The band had called themselves HELP!
Imagining different scenarios and their outcomes is always fun.
Or Phil Collins wanting to leave Genesis and join The Who as their drummer after Keith Moon died, right before Genesis hit it big in 1980.
I’m happy you wrote them too!!! I I LOVED that album!!!!!!!!
I grew up a couple hour away from where Sebastian Bach grew up and I can confirm that he was a professional singer by 14.....his band was called KID WICKED and they were on the circuit.....they came to my home town often....I never got to see them because I too was underaged and by the time I got on the scene he was already in Skid Row...but the stories went around about him....I was fortunite enough to befriend EVH when I lived in LA in the early 2000s.....he gave me a Wolfgang guitar that I obviously still have and cherish. Thanks for keeping rock alive
It's a small world. Sometime in 1987-88, Alex Van Halen lived near my friend in a gated area called The Summit. I met Alex and we oddly talked about Nintendo which he was a big fan of. I mentioned that I missed DL Roth in the band. He had less than good things to say about him and quickly pointed out that it was only after Roth left that VH got their first #1 album. I never met Eddie but was a high school classmate with his wife Valerie in 78,79,80. Another classmate of ours was Tatum O'Neal, one grade below us. Tatum became John McEnroe's wife and is now married to Patty Smyth. It's indeed a small world.
Jump was first #1
@@ponzo1967 he's referring to first number one album which was 5150.
Smaller than you think. I’m glad he was candid with you.
@@ponzo1967 Album
is funny because he could've said that but (1984) album sold much more than (5150) album. iBelieve the reason (1984) didn't reached that top spot, was because of the competition of that year comparing what (5150) album was competing that year it came out. I think (1984-1985) was the peak of VH🔥. Not saying they were having success after that, but that time frame is when they were at their hottest. iRemember you couldn't go anywhere in the country without hearing (1984) in the background coming out of somewhere.
Had never heard this story, wow. As big of a crush as I had on Patty, I would've become a much bigger VH fan. Thanks Prof.
Ha ha. Very cool!
@Marcus S Have you heard the show where Eddie played with Scandal? You can find it on youtube. He plays on I think the last 2 songs. They sound pretty good together. I think Eddie and Patty would have made a great record together, but I agree with her, I don't think she would have been a good front woman for Van Halen. I also would have loved to have heard them do an All-Star record with Smythe, Hall, Perry, and there was even talk of Pete Townshend at the time.

I think everything turned out the way it should have for VH.
Really good segment Adam.

It turned out as it should've been.
I mean, we still got some classics from them after that, right?
I started to send same reply...then saw you summed it up nicely
@@ProfessorofRock Except for the brothers dumping Sammy and Michael years later, but that's a topic for another time.
Eddie also offered the job to Australia’s Jimmy Barnes, who’d left Cold Chisel late 1983 resulting in them disbanding before reforming a number of times since 1997. Jimmy was embarking on a solo career and declined Eddie’s offer, telling him he’d just left his band so wouldn’t be joining another. He was flattered to be asked by the great man.
I like the 'what if' question but I can't wrap my head around anyone but Mr. Hagar being the voice of VH. I love all the artists mentioned and listen to their music. The choice of Sammy Hagar allowed all of the artists a place in my personal journey. Thank you to all of them for 'being with me.'
Sammy kept them going.
Patty Smyth has many great hits. She could done the job well in VH, but I'm glad she went solo. I just remembered how catchy Scandals "Goodbye To You" was. Great vocals always by Patty!
She had a few hits not many.
@@Jamescampbell4661 Great addition to the conversation. Shall we argue what constitutes "few" or "many"? Do you need 10 hits to reach "many" status? 6 is obviously not enough. Is it 8? What are your thoughts?
I absolutely love "Goodbye To You."
Goodbye to You is awesome.
@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980 I own the amp from that record! Bought it in 1985 from the guitarist
Eddie was an extremely talented musician (well just beyond his guitar skills). There are so many other musicians who would have loved to let loose working with someone of his skill, and so many sides of EVH we could have seen in trying to showcase these other musicians and his ingenuity. However, it would have been as few songs here, a couple there, and that one with that one guy... which doesn't do well in a concert tour setting. Getting an accomplished vocalist like Sammy, who played a similar style of music (not as complex as VH, but similar), who could mesh with the personalities and help bring VH musically to a level beyond of what DLR was capable, allowed for another 10 years of great music (and concerts). What "might have been" boggles the imagination, but what "was" was truly magic.
So many people were DYING to make a song with Eddie.
I agree….Prince was also a genius and could play anything..
As lifelong Van Halen fan I am glad to see that Edward was always thinking ahead. When Sammy and Ed parted ways, I had made comments to people I knew that I thought that the best thing to do would be to make a full scale instrumental effort or a female lead. Everybody though I was crazy. Well I'm happy to see that Ed was 10 years ahead of me. I would have loved to have heard that album. Personally I think that would have put Van Halen in a place so far above the EVERY band around the collective jaw drop may have changed the worlds orbit. Thanks for another great Van Halen story.
You're welcome!
Ed was the one in charge.
I always loved Patti Smyth. Of all her songs "I should be laughing" is my favorite, that song should have gotten a video!
One of your greatest videos to date! Thank you for doing this!!
Wow, thank you!
@@ProfessorofRock would love to talk to you one of these days. I just signed up on Patreon. I used to do Artist Relations for a mic company. I met all my heroes.

I remember this story, and that would have been amazing if they wound up recruiting Patty Smyth. No disrespect to Sammy Hager, but Smyth with Scandal was criminally underrated, and The Warrior was an awesome rock album. I need to get that on Vinyl still.
Keep trying!
No matter how many times I read this poem, it rings true.
"Two roads diverged in a wood, and I,
I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference."
The immortal Robert Frost.
I had tickets to the Waite/Scandal tour at the Orpheum in Minneapolis but missed half after running out of gas. I loved Waite's "Change" and was bummed at missing the opening act, but then found out they were coheadlining and missed all of John Waite. The highlight was watching a girl climb down from the balcony trying to get on stage, but was so slow that security was waiting to catch her.
I would have LOVED to hear Ed and VH collaborate with ALL of those singers, especially Patty. How interesting that would have been.
I never knew this story before, thanks for sharing, Adam. I wonder what Van Halen would have looked like had Patty accepted the frontman position? We'll never truly know.
It's fun to speculate!
I wonder as well.
I never knew. I only learned this from Adam.
What other all male bands were fronted by a woman?
Maybe she would have sounded similar to Pat Benatar???
It would have been very interesting to see what would have been, but it worked out for the best for all of them in the end.
@@Nine28457o Doubt comes to mind. Also The Cranberries. There are quite a few of them.
I’m so glad none of those singers joined VH. The songs with Sammy in the band are so iconic and a huge part of my high school/teenage memories.
You truly thrived in the Sammy years.
I LOVE Patty Smyth. Have been a BIG fan of her music since Scandal’s first big album. And I really like Daryl Hall. But the music that came out of the Hagar/Van Halen collaboration was PHENOMENAL! It couldn’t have been any better! It blew away the Roth/Van Halen version of the band. Hagar/VH was a match meant to be. No other collaborative effort involving the Van Halen brothers could have matched what they produced when Sammy Hagar was in the mix with them.
Steve Perry would have been quite intriguing as VH frontman. But…
Look at what we would have missed out on had that come to pass. Journey right up to the end of Steve’s run was magic. And Sammy did a damn fine job fronting VH too.
It’s hard to imagine any other VH future than with Sammy, but then again it’s intriguing to realize what could have been - Steve, Daryl, etc.
I wish they would have made an album! They were so musically melodic!
No one interviews musicians better than the Professor
Thanks!
It always feels more like a friendly conversation than an interview.
WOW - Never knew this, but Patty kinda makes sense - Timing is everything
My favorite rock singer of the 80s would be and still is Steve Perry. No one can out sing that man. Plus, he's a nice guy too.
Listen to traces! Great album! Even at74 he can sing well!
He’s one of the greatest singers ever. No doubt.
Journey has NEVER been the same without Steve Perry!!
Scandal with Patty Smyth was a fun band to listen to. I really enjoyed it during the summer of 84. I was an usher for Braves games, and the ushers would usually hang out after the game to let traffic die down. Warrior would always be one of the songs blaring out of car speakers.
It's a great song no doubt.
It’s an anthem.
An album full of songs with different lead singers would have been awesome.
I agree!
"They weren't like The Kinks" when discussing the brothers volatility.
Dave and Ray's battles are the stuff of legends...
Oh my goodness, who knows how things would have turned out with Patty fronting the band. Steve Perry too. It’s wild to think about. I mean think about how different they sounded with Sammy fronting after David Lee!! Oh the possibilities. This is a definite head scratcher. Thanks Professor.
❤️💜💚
Sammy was a great fit at that time, and I couldn't think of anyone else filling DR's shoes but Sammy was the right choice. They made some iconic music as a band at that point in time.As a huge Van Halen fan,and side tracking here, I will say after Sammy's departure my top replacements would have been(Not taking away from Gary, huge talent)#1 Eric Martin(Mr Big) such a range and so powerfull.#2Chris Cornell,a voice of a generation.Man what would have VH sounded like?Big time I bet.#3 Mitch Malloy, after hearing some of the stuff that the guys created with him although sounding very much like Sammy/Gary era he had a freshness I think that would have breathed life back into the VH camp.Coulda shoulda woulda.Neither here or there now.Long live the King of 10 fingers and 6 strings
Chris Cornell in Van Halen would have been spectacular.
Agreed, Sammy just brought a breath of fresh air with his style and lyrics. They just had the rare magic that happens when everyone is in tune and on time and really into the music..
Greetings, ProfessorioaufRockians, I am Xalmoxis of the multi-verse next door to yours. In my niche of the that multi-verse, we *did* have Van Smyth ... errr, I mean, Smyth Halen ... and it *ROCKED*!!! MORE than rocked. So heavy. So heavy and poppy. You wouldn't believe it!!! And when DLR heard Patti sing "Jump"? He disappeared for a year in embarassment, having a heart attack by the end of that year.
Patty Smyth is an incredible vocalist!
Yes, she is!
The Red Rocker brought maturity to the band when they needed it. Journey chose a singer that sounded like Steve Perry, No one could really replace Freddie Mercury. Patty made the right choice. She seems happy. Thanks Adam.
I honestly think we took the best possible timeline for Van Halen. Hagar was a perfect fit and literally gave the band another decade of life. This is usually unheard of for a rock band to stay relevant more than 10 years, let alone 20+ years.
I'm happy for all how things turned out in the end.
For me Dave with Vai and Sheehan, Van Halen with Sammy n Patty doing her songs she did were all welcome surprises.
Just thankful I saw VH in my graduation year of 1984 for the first and almost last time.
The Big Brother Tour and G.O. 1984 novel sure opened eyes back then to what's going on in the world today, drawing me closer to Jesus Christ more than ever. 🙏✝️
Because at least we still had Eddie the guitar god.
Eddie Van Halen famously discussed filling the vocalist role with MANY people over the years. Still, this idea is the one that seems to have progressed the farthest and is one of the more legit and interesting in their history. Thanks again for more fantastic content, Adam!
I mean, imagine a song on 5150 being sung by Steve Perry or Daryl Hall? 🧐

@@ProfessorofRock, my 21 year old son recently discovered The Warrior. From my influence, he’s always been into 80s music, so it was a matter of time before he found Patty Smyth and Scandal. He’s a big Pat Benatar fan, so it’s not a big jump to like Patty Smyth.

Best idea that I've never heard about before today: VH making a record with a bunch of different singers. I always thought Patty was great, but if she'd joined VH on a permanent basis, it would've been kind of a weird fit. But when you talked about Eddie making a record with Patty and Darryl Hall and others... I was yelling at the screen, "He should've!!!" Indeed, he should've.
I cannot imagine Patty singing every song on Van Halen’s catalog from 1986 to 1993, for example.
@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980 Right, much less having to cover the Dave songs when they played live. But a whole separate project would've been really cool.
Can you imagine Van Halen with Billy Idol as the frontman? That would've rocked!
This was a really good interview and it also got me thinking who they might have asked before choosing Gary Cherone for their Van Halen 3 album.
Cherone was a very bad choice. I thought so when announced and even more so after I heard the end result.
Gary Cherone was an unlikely pick. I wasn’t expecting that.
Given the BETRAYAL of Steve Perry by the other members of Journey, it would've been SURREAL to see Steve as the VH front man! Talk about the multi verse and parallel realities!
Funny how you mentioned that there was no Internet to verify stories like this, because the story got a little twisted before it hit my school. I can still remember the discussions- and even arguments- when it was incorrectly retold that PATTI SMITH was asked to join Van Halen! I didn't learn that it was actually Patty Smyth until a few years later when one of the rock magazines retold the story. Still to this day, because of the incorrect rumor, I think about what Van Halen would have sounded like with both Patty and Patti.

Van Halen with Sammy was the greatest! Absent him, it would have been fun to see them record an album collaborating with all of those potentials, but you can’t tour that album.
Right?
I have been thinking the same thing!
Can you imagine her singing 'Don't Tell Me What Love Can Do'? I bet she would absolutely nail that.
I'd love to hear the alternate dimension VanHalen with Patty in it, interesting to think about
I know, right?
There is an Australian band called Cold Chisel and their singer, a guy named Jimmy Barnes, was approached to join after Dave left. He tells a great story about how he was in L.A on holiday and when he got back to the hotel room, his wife said "Oh, some guy called Eddie Van Halen called". He rang him back and Eddie asked him to come up to 5150 for a chat, but Jimmy had to babysit his daughter while his wife weny out shopping. So Eddie and Ted Templeman "who had both been partying pretty hard" came around to his hotel room to talk him into it, saying they had a "great album of ballads" in the pipeline (5150). Eddie told him he wanted to move away from rock and just do ballads. Jimmy (or Barnsey as he's known in Australia) told them he probably wasn't the best choice as a ballad singer (true) and that he was wanting to focus on his new solo career.
All she had to do was ask him back, "Why don't we just do an album together!"- things would have shifted Eddie's attention to a project and not a whole tour. It would have been great for sure. I just started college when 1984 came out and Michael Jackson was blowing up....what a time for music!!
I think that would have been an interesting path.
Patty would have been a great choice, but Steve Perry is just a mindblowing what-if to think about. The word "supergroup" applied to a Van Halen fronted by Perry would be an understatement.
It would be much more than that because his voice would take us to the stars!
Back in the day I had a bootleg of Eddie guesting on a couple of songs at a Scandal gig (I probably still do, somewhere). They were definitely a great combo, but we got what we got - and as others have said it was probably for the best.
Whaaaat? Would love to hear that!
@@ProfessorofRock I got it on Audiogalaxy or similar back when that was a thing, so I'm sure it's stashed away on a hard drive somewhere. Man, I've got to hear what a van halen Steve perry group would sound like.
Personally I’m glad she said no, and yes for completely selfish reason, I love her self named album. Front to back, every song is amazing, it is a perfect album.
For me, I put it up there with Tracy Chapman’s first album, and with Marc Cohen too. They are all albums I treasure, and for the life of me I’ll never understand, like with Marc’s album, why she isn’t a house hold name and why everyone had a copy of it.
It’s always annoyed me that when I say her name, everyone only mentions The Warrior, and nothing else. I like The Warrior, but it’s not even her best song.
I should add Carol Kings album Tapestry and also add Leonard Cohen and Jennifer Warne’s collaboration, Famous Blue Raincoat to the perfect album list that I treasure. If you don’t have either of these albums, then what the hell is wrong with you. Lol
No seriously, these are a must for any Music lover’s collection. Especially Famous Blue Raincoat, it will touch your soul. Give them a try if you don’t know them.
I always tell everyone to look behind The Warrior as Scandal’s best. There is also the kiss off classic Goodbye to You and Love’s Got a Line on You, an underrated gem from 1983.
@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980 you really do know your 80’s music. Are you sure you are just a junior at high school school?
Her time with Scandal was good, but it’s her solo work that’s the best in my eyes. No Mistakes is my favourite of her solo works, not sure why it didn’t do well on the charts.
@@brenturquhart7090 Yes, I really am a junior in high school. I’ve been studying old music since I was in middle school. This song and Patty Smyth rocks, and she’s even more amazing on her own. It is like she doesn’t age!
Another guy I always thought would be a great lead singer for Van Halen, was Tommy Shaw of Styx.
I absolutely love Steve Perry, but I don't think he would have fit that well in Van Halen. I would have liked to hear some songs with Patty Smyth or Pat Benatar. In the summer of 1987 I saw Monsters of Rock with Van Halen headlining at the Pontiac Silverdome in Michigan and Ted Nugent just showed up out of the blue and did a couple songs with them at the very end of the concert. For those songs he worked well with Van Halen and may have been a good addition. He and Sammy Hagar, to me at least, were of a similar cut. There had to be a lot of pressure and a feeling of needing to fill some big shoes in taking that position and I think Sammy did it fantastically.
I agree with you in regards to Steve Perry.
Ted Nugent would blend well.
I know this story about Patty Smyth and Van Halen
This is a tough one because Sammy was a GREAT choice! He had TONS of work behind him and his range is still there!
I would've loved to hear Van Halen with Patty at vocals. I feel like the world really missed something there. Even if it was only one album.
Great content Professor! Hagar was awesome but it would’ve been great if EVH and co. would’ve done an album with Patty. Cheers🥃
Steve Perry ! But thank god Sammy Hagar joined , Great Video, as always, Adam
Van Halen and Steve Perry would have been something to have heard.
Van Journey?!
@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980 Nope, Van Perry!
Great video. It is an interesting "what if" but I'm glad things turned out the way they did. I'm a fan of every Van Halen era in which Eddie is shredding the guitar...guess that means all of them. David, Sammy, Gary.....they all had their good points.....and bad. But lets not kid ourselves...Eddie WAS Van Halen.
BTW ...... Mammoth WVH is amazing too.
There’s no weak era with them. Eddie was the main holding piece.
Jimmy Barnes ( lead singer from Aussie band Cold Chisel ) also claimed that Eddie tried to poach him to front VH
I didn’t know he was in on the bid too!
Patty would have been amazing!!🤘🔥
Sorry but I can't imagine Patty singing a song like "Hot For Teacher" !
@@xoxxobob61 don’t remember if Sammy sang that when I saw them?
I agree!
Steve Perry and EVH? Wow, what a concept!
I had heard that rumor about Sebastian Bach, but after the band split with Sammy. I always thought that Lita Ford would've been a good fit.
We tried to imagine "5150" with her singing...she would have rocked that record, especially the songs "5150" and "Dreams"...but Sammy worked out okay (Hahahaaaa...)...
That would have been amazing.
Sammy Hagar wrote dreams and other songs on 5150
Patty and VH would've made some bada$$ music together. Too bad it didn't happen, she has the vocal chops.
She certainly does!
They had potential.
I just can't picture Van Halen without Sammy after David quit, so Sammy Hagar 100%.... Now, Steve Perry, that's another story I can't even imagine how great that woould had been.
I would have loved to see that!
Dave Mustaine of Megadeth was reading a Readers Digest interview of Patty Smyth in the mid-80's and she had a quote saying "peace sells, but is anyone buying?" Dave loved the line and it influenced the song "Peace Sells...But Who's Buying?" I wonder if Patty knows?
I would enjoy Patty Smyth joining the band. I agree with what she said in the interview, that she would have brought different influences in. I think the mix would have been interesting, as well as some more eclectic lyrics
I was told that Eddie asked Sass Jordan. And she said no....? That would have been a killer group
I remember when "Why Can't This Be Love" came out when I was a kid and the excitement and unknown of the new band with Sammy. A lot of Roth fans, including me, hated that song at first. It was too much synthesizer and the band didn't have the same edge that it had with Roth. It wasn't the same Van Halen that we grew to love. I didn't really know Sammy much at the time other than I can't drive 55 which I did like of course. Anyway, as time passed and I heard other songs on the album, Sammy really grew on me. I found all the great music he had already put out and I was sold. I'll always love Dave with early VH but I became a huge Sammy fan afterward and even got to meet him and see him play in Cabo a couple of times at his bar. Would I have felt the same way about Patty if she was the one who took the mantle? Tough to say but it would've been interesting for sure. That said, I'm glad the way it turned out cuz those 3 albums (not counting Balance) are still some of my favorites.
_The Beat Of A Heart_ is still my favorite Scandal song.
So many fabulous singers! If Eddie, Alex and Michael had decided to make a compilation album with all of them, including Joe Cocker, it would have been fire. A young Sebastian Bach would have paved his musical path in a great way, and songs with Daryl Hall, Patty Smythe, Steve Perry.... Automatic platinum.
The discussion of this as a multiverse lets an individual's mind wander to what things would have sounded like in an environment more like the Alan Parsons Project where the vocalist tended to be chosen to fit the song (track) project. That would have made it more of a "does this project fit a time window you have available?" scenario.
John McEnroe told me his biggest victory was winning Patty Smyths heart ❤ and hand!
I don't doubt it.
Really? You cannot be serious.
Mitch Malloy was apparently very close to replacing Sammy. There's some demos floating around of him jamming in the studio with the band.
Patty Smyth for the win! Just think how great Goodbye to You would have been at live shows with Eddie playing guitar !
An album with different singers would have been a very cool album!!!! But to have Patti be the singer for van Halen would have been phenomenal!!!
One reason we might never have another "guitar god" like Eddie, is the quickly changing industry. How many contemporary songs do you hear that even have a guitar solo? I've watched a lot of great guitarists on RUclips who are amazing---in their living rooms. But they will likely live in obscurity, shredding their guitars for a few thousand fans on RUclips. Even the greatest guitarists touring today are not household names.
It would have been fantastic to have one record with different singers and Van Halen....
Like Santana...
Just amazing.............
God love Eddie and the boys........
SEBASTIAN BACH WOULD'VE BEEN DYNAMITE OMGGGG!!!
