Don't see the problem myself. I play both flute and recorder. Different instruments and repertoire. It's just snobbery IMO.

1:08 this is actually not a problem , you can play flute laying or sitting ...... The thing is your breathing , if your breathing is good you can play flute while sitting
I can agree
Damm I play flute laying ,also I my stomach is really hard ,I'm happy having good breathing ,It also helps me diving , singing and doing martial arts
I played the flute during my school years too, always sitting down. It was no issue for me. Regarding the arms, you really get used to holding something up like that rather quick, so the tired arm muscles is only in the beginning.

I've been a flute player for over 13 years and tbh I didn't choose the flute, it chose me. Flute is also known to be the hardest to play out of the wind instruments. I agree with the piccolo part.....I don't like it either.
Really I never knew flute was known to be the hardest to play in wind instruments
lol i chose flute because my friend was doing it and i wanted to be in the same class as her… and ngl i kinda regret it because some really fun music you just can’t play on the flute, i kinda wish i picked saxophone or something
@@kirkbrianventura8449 you’re not supposed to actually put your mouth on it, you have to aim the air in the mouth hole.
I play the flute too and yeah it's pretty hard lol. But the hardest woodwind is generally co sidereal to be the oboe or other double reeded instruments.
@@jas2994 the alto sax is arguably the easiest woodwind instrument to learn. I learned the alto sax, and it was quite simple.
When people call a flute a recorder, “how it doesn’t look similar,” if anything a clarinet is closer to the recorder. Anyways a little to late for me, already a flute player, and I love it.
Ya. I play clarinet recorder flute guitar and piano. Do I play too many instruments?
@@toes4442 You are very talented
I only learned to play clarinet because I thought it would be the next best thing to the recorder and I can confirm, a clarinet is way more like a recorder than a flute is
In terms of how you hold it, a recorder looks more like a clarinet, but it's technically a type of flute.

I have played for about ten years and dont have any qualifications in the flute aside from grade 6 (am working on 7) as I play casually but I have experienced this when I played in a local orchestra for a bit

could have made it "10 things to watch out for" when learning the flute
Me deciding whether 4 years of being a flautist is too late or not...
In my language, the recorder is called "flauta doce" and the flute is called "flauta transversal". Just now I'm discovering they are two completely different instruments.
Same in French. Technically yea they’re 2 types of flutes among many other types of traditional flutes etc.
In german „Flöte“ means also recorder and flute „Blockflöte“ = recorder „Querflöte“ = flute
i believe this is the case in many languages, so this is why flutes are compared to recorders so much
Yeah, fun fact, but in French a recorder is called a "flûte à bec" while the flute is called a "flûte traversière". So, if you say a "flûte traversière" nobody will mix it up with a recorder, but if you just say "flûte" without specifying, there is a strong chance people will think you mean recorder.
Furthermore, children who learn music (well, it was more common for my mother's generation than mine) will start with the recorder - it's "easy", because you just have to blow in a tube and put your fingers on the right holes. So most children have a limited knowledge of the recorder, and you find them as "toys instruments" in kindergarten and schools, so I would say that's also why the recorder remains the first "flûte" that comes to mind.
Me: Im tired of piano... i want play something harder and work out at the same time.
FluteCookies: I have a solution.
I've been playing the flute since 4th grade, and I'm 25 now. I was originally going to learn the violin because there was going to be a program for it at my school, but it was canceled since not enough people signed up. I still want to learn someday, but I'm happy we got band instead, and I was able to play amongst many other instruments. I was in band all throughout the rest of school (ending at 12th grade).
I disagree about standing up for a long time though. We always sat while playing in band, aside from the percussion section. And at home, or wherever else you are, it's perfectly fine to play the flute while sitting. Not sure where you got the idea you have to stand.
Anyway, I love the flute, and am anxious to get a better one eventually, as well as a bass flute. I enjoy learning the notes to songs from the radio, movies, shows, games, and anime that soumd good when you play alone. I miss playing in a group with other instruments as well though.
Reason #11: Be prepared to spend a nice amount of money on your better quality flute:)
Recently started the Lute as an adult, it was something I had been wanting to play as a kid but due to an underbite I was told it was impossible. So I went on and played other instruments (forced on me by the school instructors) and eventually started hating classical music because of it (I had the bassoon forced on me as a tiny, tiny, child and I didn't like it) and moved on to different instruments and other music genres.
Now as an adult I was at a music school and casually chatted with the flute instructor who was somewhat horrified by my story and said it was nonsense. Now he's teaching me flute ^^
“You’ll never be standing up playing the piano in your life”
Me just a few minutes ago: *stands playing my scales on the piano*
Why discourage people from learning to play the flute ? I play it in the orchestra and we sit ….it’s an awesome jazz instrument ….Moe Kaufman was my uncle ! He loved it and was amazing.
I’m relearning I just found a teacher today!
I though all 10 reasons are going to be “cuz flute is so fxxking hard”
Flute is cool. Actually I used to want to learn flute but my mom forced me to play piano😶
Flute has been my main instrument for many years and I love it and have enjoyed it. No regrets playing that as my main instrument, though I admit piano stole my soul. Enjoyed your video and talking points, though didn't completely agree with all of them myself or thought a bit overblown (haha) but did others like the shaking lips, lol. Vibrato without even trying right?! Yes I learned piccolo too, and considered it the honor it was. Only the best had that privilege. No solo beats piccolo on the Stars And Stripes Forever! Such fun! I would like to add one disadvantage to flute playing. Doing so over the years can contribute to a bit of moderate hearing loss in the left ear.
I used to play flute for like six years, give or take. The 11th thing on this list I say is : Medical problems. Like, from the posture while playing flute, my right scapula/shoulder blade (no idea which one is commonly used in English, not my first language, sorry) is pushed out more than the left one. My parents used to say that I basically have really lame wing on my back. I also have scoliosis, so maybe that contributed to it...but without back and posture exercises and holding your flute the other way to the left side for a few minutes so you kinda even the posture...you and your shoulder blades are doomed. So fun.
Loved the video though!
The Flute is one of the musical instruments I want to learn.
At present, I play the Soprano Saxophone, and people think I'm playing the Flute.
Soprano sax looks like a brass clarinet
I love playing the flute y'all just jealous😂😂😝😝
Actually Chopin wrote a piece for flute and piano, "Variations on a theme by Rossini"
All good points and I'm not really thinking about it as an option. But how hard it is? If it's also takes a lot of time then it's a definite no. But if it's not too difficult then maybe it's still worth it? I mean one note at a time doesn't sound too bad?
I haven't played my flute in a while and I don't know if I want to play it or not. What do you think? Sorry for the stupid question :/
you should definitely play it
what’s the song you was playing in the beginning???😂
What’s your intro? I swear I’ve heard it somewhere
I like the happy couch potato. X-/
That said, I’m a piano player, but once I get better at that, I’d love to start flute. You can’t really lug around a piano around. 😣
do the violin have a bigger repertory?
When we were testing out instruments by blowing into the head piece, I was able to immediately make a sound from the flute, which is apparently rare. I chose the flute because of that. Also, if I'm told to play the piccolo, I'll refuse. What're they gonna do, somehow force me?
When I play the flute in my band we always sit and never stand
Too late I already picked the flute as my band instrument at school but at least I still have next year I can either get out of band or talk with the teacher to get a new instrument the next year😁👌🏼
you’ll love it.
I learned how to play the flute like 5 years ago (with a music teacher and I had to play the piccolo in a group and I stopped playing in general) and I really wanna play an instrument by myself but I'm not sure which instrument fits me. I really love the flute but I also wanna play the ocarina ir kalimba or another flute like instrument. Does anyone know a nice instrument I can teach myself?
Try an instrument with a reed! The reed is annoying at first but gets easier the longer you play.
I love playing the flute even tho I just stared because a lot of my family members also play the flute so idk if I should still play or not
What do you think about the Indian bamboo flute?
How's about using Vietnamese bamboo flute instead ?
I've been playing flute for 7 years now... and Yes I do sometimes regret it! LMAO but other than that I still love my flute! It's my life!
and about standing? Amm... I've been in a symphonic Band at school and Wind Ensemble at our church and I play sitting in a chair, oh I sometimes try laying down while playing haha... it's just a matter of how you control you're breathing haha!
I played the flute in highschool, as a guy....
I agree with you on alot of things you've said sadly, not the gay part though lol. The flute is physically limited to one note, strain, fluids , lip form and breathing. It's like singing, but harder lol. Reed instruments have it alot easier and you don't have to slant it off to one side...
I'm now practicing electric guitar 🙂, it's definitely a bit harder to overcome the single note mindset.
PS, at least I had a way to start a conversation with a cute girl I saw who played the flute. 😎
I just started learning to play the flute, don't know if it's a good idea to watch this video for my motivation yet here we are 😄
me too, just here to see what people think about it.
If someone can play , we also can learn it. To play better.😅
1. Why would you need to stand up while playing the flute? Can anybody help with explaining this, please?
Hey. I play recorder at age 75. A good recorder, well-played, is a good thing. I play solo recorder during communion in church and get many compliments.
Great video! Can we get a video of you playing a classical repertoire? I really want to hear you play it
yesssssssssssss
All instruments are good to learn.
Almost all the points mentioned in the video goes for most of the musical instruments.
If you're not planning to go pro and just learning as a hobby, you can learn any instrument to a certain skill level. The process is certainly difficult. I started learning guitar a few months back and now I am definitely better than when I started. You just gotta practice regularly. Go one step at a time and don't compare with others.
This is what i need, ture and soft enough. Personally I found flute sounds are beautiful, and thats one of the reasons i pick it as leisure. Yes, most people suggested to play piano or guitar, however i dont have the same feeling to there sounds. Well, everyone make fun to noobs, and hypercritical to pro, thats the principle. Thx anyways :)
I do arm exercises with Boho beautiful videos to be able to hold my flute. 3 years 💪

I’m a guy who plays the flute and that is so true. I asked one of the other band kids out and they thought I was gay because I played the flute kinda hurt but now I laugh at it.
im a clairnet trying to learn how to play the flute so i can see mutiple reasons why i wouldnt wanna play it but i loveeee the flute and im going to put practice and more into learning it as well as to keep playing my clairnet
I play both viola and flute but i think the flute is way more fun to play
I have played flute for 15 yrs. And recorder for 40. Love them both. Yes, I am male and not gay. Ha ha. I was attracted to flute by a performer named Ian Anderson. Yes, from the rock group Jethro Tull. I play mostly impromptu style. Also Jazz and Latin Jazz, contemporary and traditional Christian music. Also flute and reorder in Caribbean music styles of Soca, calypso and Steel Pan music.
I find flute and recorder very versatile. I was originally a Percussion major in college and got sooooo tired of lugging all those drums around! I have an excellent ear an wanted to take up a melodic instrument (other than timpani. First recorder and later flute. You probable know Ian Anderson/Jethro Tull. But check out Nestor Torres for incredible Latin Jazz flute, a wonderful genre of flute music. I am self taught and play in several bands. Love it! So don’t think of or treat flues as just an orchestral instrument. I still play percussions too, but much more flute, and occasional recorder.
Toney!! I listened to this video again, and that is so true about standing up. I mean I am a working pianist of course but I can see why you would say something like this. With the flute why would you want to sit down with it I mean you can of course but that is like singing sitting down. You can do it but it is harder to project from your stomach to try to get that air going. Well, the same with the flute. Yo are going to bee better off standing so that you are not going to go flat hahahaha. Don’t get me wrong I am sure some flute players do sit while they are practicing and that is great too of course but to get that diaphragm working to stay on key you want to bee standing so that the air will flow. Also…. With the piano that is so true. You are not going to stand with a piano. The only thing now that you will stand with is a synthesizer or keyboard. Those you can port around still it is a big pain to have to port them transporting cables and amps and then the synthesizer or keyboard. But those are the only things keyboards that you are really going to stand with. But a piano or digital piano ummm… that is the pain about playing the piano. Though i am a pianist and I love my instrument I do dog my instrument. Hahahahaha. The thing about the piano is this. People think that it is beautiful but I have to say. Don’t bee deceived. It really is not that beautiful. The piano from the outside may look beautiful but it is a huge piece of work. You can not transport it easily you can’t pick it up it is not that beautiful girl like the flute is. Very loving instrument. The piano comes across intimidating to people when they see it and desire to start with it you can not just tune it up you have to have a piano tuner to take care of that. Your having to break your back to play the thing. Because you are hovering over a huge keyboard. You actually don’t feel calm after playing it especially if you are a working pianist. You actually are drained mentally because of the way you have to sit at it and hold your body. It is so dramatic compared to the other instruments. For people that don’t play the thing yes. It may to them look beautiful and those that are listening may say it is soothing and therapeutic. But for those of us having to play the darn thing it is a piece of work. You get hot and it is often loud. Piano playing is pretty noisy even on a grand with the lid down. You have to keep them tuned up twice a year at least if you want them to sound good you have to make sure that all the parts are working correctly before you are able to have someone come play it. The only thing about a digital piano is that you don’t have to tune it and you can do so much with it emulating other instruments but it is still very heavy to transport. Yes. You can take the frame apart on a digital to transport it but still it is pretty darn heavy and then the time that it takes to put the thing together so the piano actually is a piece of work and it takes up a lot of space. It has work written all over it. The flute on the other hand is like that girl who will stick with you and you can hold her and pick her up. She is so much more romantic and wants to bee held. She is low in carrying for and you can take her where ever you go pretty much hahahahaha. It is so forgiving and you can take her with you on a road trip if you want she is very happy and doesn’t need that much attention. It is not demanding like the piano is. She doesn’t demand she is this beautiful thing that is just a Jule. I have never heard the piano being called a jule. And I am its player and this is what i think of the piano hahahaha. The way a piano is played compared to a flute the players of both instruments are so different. Pianists are more snobbish and rough and intimidating like their instruments. The flute player however are more relaxed and very calm I can surely tell that you for sure have the personality of your instrument their Toney. Hahahaha. And oh the other thing with a flute you can get away with practicing late at night where as the piano if you even try you can disturb the house unless you have a digital then it is fine to practice or play. With this being said the thing I love about playing the instrument is that it is huge and you really do look like a boss playing the piano hovering over the instrument’s keyboard. As i stated in my last comment the boss of the instruments or if they had a supervisor it would be the piano the piano is actually the boss of the instruments. It is actually like the supervisor of the instruments. It is their leading, supporting, and accompanying. And being a support for a jazz band that is what your boss does as well. Now as far as the king of instruments, well, that would have to bee the pipe organ. That thing is the king of instruments. But the boss would bee the piano. So actually with this flute players are very very humble and are submissive just like their instruments where as the piano and us we are pretty snobbish and proud kind of intimidates people because the instrument that we play. I am telling it like it is and I don’t think other pianists would tell you the honest truth like this but i am hahahahaha. If you were to see which instrumnet was more beautiful and actually has beauty written all over it it would for sure not bee the piano. It would bee the flute. You all have beauty written all over you, and your instruments.. stay awesome!!!
I’m going to be playing the flute and many people are already telling me I’m gay. After telling me so... they quickly regret it.
This whole thing about guys being gay playing the flute is stupid. I'm straight and played the flute cus I like the sound it makes. I had the balls to play it in highschool way back in the late 90's in a school where homophobia was rampant. Its a fine instrument that plays great music. Plus to a past bullion collector looks like silver bling. Some of the most famous flute players were men. Have fun and don't give a shit what people think.
I really thank you for making me enjoy this process, They do regret what they say though... literally, I force them to verbally excuse themselves. It’s pretty fun, I don’t really mind the comments because I know that I’m not the ignorant one. Also the knowledge I gain isn’t something everyone seeks, therefore I have the upper hand in arguments. Thank You yet again!

I don't know which type of flute you are mentioning. You Said it weighs half a KG. In lndia the flute we use weighs less than 100 gms made of bamboo tube. It is the oldest and most widely used wind instrument that could negotiate very well with Indian music. The flute are UR talking about may have these problems but not the one we are using and used to.

Hi, you can try Indian music if you want something classical. Bollywood 20's , 19's and 18's songs, the farther you go more classical it is. You can just even search for indian classical and you will find good enough to play.

Why is it true that they ask if you're gay just because you play the flute?!?!?
As a tubist I used to be jealous to flutists. All my solol literature was contemporary and a-tonal, and most of the flute music was melodic and very tonal, easy to remember.
As a flautist I have another reason being that I know people who think when I play flute that it’s annoying
I hate being associated with recorder
3:50 when there's not enough classical works featuring the flute, play covers of contemporary music, such as heavy metal. That's what I do (because I've forgotten how to read sheet music).
Well, until problem 4:32 kicks in, and the melody sounds hollow without bass and drums.

sadly I chose the clarinet, honestly, it's beautiful, but it's really exhausting to play since no tone comes out unless you blow air in with extreme force lol. Also, it weighs about 800g and all the weight is on my thumb, like literally nothing else. Should have just gone for piano or something, it's obviously hard but not as exhausting
it's too late, i've already learnt it :D. Fact number 9 is kinda weird, in Asia Guy playing flute is completely normal, i think if u have some interest in Asia culture, then you will know how obvious that is. Also, Asia flute is kinda light :3
I was hoping the video was uploaded on April 1st
I never planned to play the flute I've always wanted to play violin. But since theres no orchestra in my school I "had" to choose flute
My adopted mama wouldn't let me play la flute, cause I am male, & she was protecting me. I continued with viola. I am grown now, & since men can get away with playing a bamboo flute, or Irish low d flute, I am gonna try the Irish low d flute. It sounds a bit more low, than a Chinese bamboo flute.
Bansuri E bass
Omg I absolutely hate the shaky breath. I had it for a while when I had to tune in orchestra. And yes the embarrassment didn't help😅
have you noticed that there are more flute transcriptions than flute compositions ,I realized after buying one XD
I already picked the instrument now I feel bad because these things always happen besides the recorder and male liking part.
Thanksieee, you're my inspiration ❤️
i wonder why clarinets arent i mewn they look more like a recorder then us
In India no one thinks that a male who plays flute is gay because one of our male god named krishna loved to play flute. I was surprised to hear that in some country people think that and tbh it doesn't make any sense.
