- My first interview with tv and movie legend James Garner...a mans man!! Rockford,Maverick,The Great Escape...Grad Prix...so many great roles...Honest,Straight shooter!
On his death. Tom Selleck said, "Jim was a mentor to me and a friend, and I will miss him." Sally Field said, "My heart just broke. There are few people on this planet I have adored as much as Jimmy Garner. I cherish every moment I spent with him and relive them over and over in my head. He was a diamond. Cllint Eastwood said, "Garner opened the door for people like Steve McQueen and myself."
The Rockford episodes Selleck did with Garner were hilarious!
@@jennifersman7990 I always wished he could have revisited the Lance White character on Magnum playing duel characters, that would have been a helluva an episode!
That’s not much of a recommendation for him for me because I think they Clint Eastwood and Steve McQueen were so of the worst womanizers around. However, I’ll have to say that Clint Eastwood said that he loves women. Steve McQueen loved his children but he had been cruel and abusive to his women, at least that’s what Mr Google said. 😊😊😊😊😊
@@winonamassingill7895 It's moronic to read gossip about people you don't know and will never meet, and that makes you a moron. Believeing any of your Google/search crap makes you an even bigger moron, and commenting here about what you've found about people you'll never ever meet is, well, incredibly IGNORANT and STUPID...
James Garner is one of the most watchable, likeable actors of all time. "Egos bigger than their talent" is one of the great lines!
I met James Garner in Orlando Florida, while I was playing the piano at T.J Murphys ( a golf club and restaurant Bar ) in the early 70's he came over to me and said, he enjoyed my playing, couldn't believe my eyes, he was wearing a GoodYear overall shirt then went to finish his lunch and simply walked out the door and nobody bothered him... I'll never forget that and he also shook my hand...
He might have been there for the Sebring race evens....or Daytona. He raced cars, I think with the SCCA series...
Nicest guy to work with.I did a role on Rockford Files with Rita Moreno and he was so complimentary to her. A wonderful experience that I will cherise forever
+Ron Gilbert
You played Freddie. Right Snooky?
wish I could have met him one of my favorite actors
Ron Gilbert -You must know Bob Jones, Assistant director on the Rockford files?? He is my neighbor.
Rita Moreno? That must have been something. One of my favorites. What was she like?
you are a lucky man,way to go
I loved the Rockford files in the early 80s as a kid.
Best show ever
I learned to drive watching it hand brake turns j turns etc
Well, the original run run ended Jan 1980. But I'm sure they were syndicated, which Jim got irate about a cut of syndication.
Class act from the beginning. I miss this man.
Jean Wissinger one cool guy! Great father, great husband a class act.
Yep, one of my favourites, RIP James (Jimbo), you are a class act, we need more like you.
@@cameraman655 I miss this man, along with those that we have already lost. The entertainment venue just cannot produce such stars as these. They've lost their way.
I heard James Garner and Charles Bronson almost got into a fight Lol
@@earth7551 Charlie had a hot temper as I recall. I'm sure James Garner calmed him down. LOL
I grew up with this man in my living room, my mother loved him, I love him.... what a great actor. James Garner is an amazing man, one in a million and a dying breed in Hollywood.
Same for me..
He was far left like the rest of Hollywood.
He served his nation in 2 services in 2 seperate wars and was a civil rights activist when it meant you could lose your job, your career or have your head beat in for doing so. A real man.
@@markharrison2544 stop parroting the same reply in every comment you brain dead spastic.
Did he ever leave?
This man, Robert Mitchum, Steve McQueen, Paul Newman...just phenomenal men. Real, honest to god drivers too.
And cool like jack Nicholson... same level
@@harrybrown7680 Yep for sure....
Sean Connery as well.....
and Bronson.
Absolutely.
I love the sound of his voice. He had a very calm and soothing voice, which also has an air of confidence to it. Reminds me of my dad.
So sad to lose another great actor. I loved James Garner in all of his acting roles. RIP
Best TV actor ever.
Yes.
Only if he was saved. I think he was a Democrat. They think its ok to kil Babies.
@@slundgr one of the best in ANY setting. He’d have been a GREAT stage actor if that was what he chose to do. He was both a great actor AND reactor. A terrific dude too!
He was a truly nice man and excellent actor, such a pity he's no longer with us.
I m old now, and I had a huge crush on this man my entire life. I’ll still watch his movies no matter how many times I’ve seen them.
Met Garner at LA car show auction. He was using a cane and folks were keeping him busy with autographs and chi-chat. Finally I saw he was almost alone and just before auction started I mentioned always seeing him at Raiders games. He fully lit up and wanted to talk football big-time. He was there to bid on McQueen stuff, invited me to his exclusive area. It was fun time.
It didn't matter whether a movie or show Garner did was good or bad, he was ALWAYS great. NEVER a bad performance.
May he (James Garner) RIP. 🙏🙏A very underrated actor. I loved him in the ‘Rockford Files’. And the western with him being Wyatt Erpp. 👏👏
A real and decent human being. RIP Mr. Garner. You will certainly be missed.
Larry, Taiwan
Classy actor. Loved him in Support your local Sheriff.
Garner was a gentleman secure in his own skin .
Absolutely
P I
A Class Act in every sense of the meaning....I'm sad for myself and ALL of his fans...but so thankful i was able to appreciate him in my lifetime as well! Smile everyone and enjoy a taco as Jim Rockford would!! Cheers
I love James Garner... he was the best of the best ❤️
He was my Dad's favorite actor. And he even reminds me of my dear old dad. They had a lot in common both from Oklahoma and both born in 1928 and both have black hair. I could go on. But I don't want to bore you.
It was fucking boring , But i read the dam, thing anyway ,,, you prick . you got me ,,,
too late
I THINK THIS MAN WAS A AWESOME ACTOR. HE DID HIS THING IN THE GREAT ESCAPE, ALONG WITH MANY OTHER MOVIES HE DID. I WAS ALSO AMAZED TO KNOW THAT HE WAS ONE OF THE FEW ACTORS ALONG WITH ACTRESSES THAT ATTENDED THE I HAVE A DREAM MARCH IN WASHINGTON. YOU WILL BE MISSED MR. GARNER. HE WAS CERTAINLY A HANDSOME GUY IN HIS TIME. RIP
Debbie C Oh, yeah, the most handsome.
Debbie C his company Cherokee productions was the first to sign a contract with the Black Stuntmen’s Association in the sixties no less. This man practiced what he preached.
I love the photographs of Mr Garner at the Washington March in '63. Standing hand in hand with the incredible Diahann Carroll, the definition of solidarity.
@@razorbackfilms You need to realize that being left in the 60’s and 70’s is not the same as the “woke” left of today. Today Garner would be considered as center or libertarian. And I can live with that.
"Ego's bigger than their talent".....love that line.
John Fuentes would like to have heard who he thought had a big ego with the talent to match. Maybe Brando, for one.
One of my favorite shows while growing-up was "The Rockford Files" and I still love to watch it as time permits. Mr. Garner was always a class-act and he seemed like a very down-to-earth guy.
Rockford Files one of my favorite TV theme songs of all time.
I still think it’s one of the best tv shows ever made. What a cast that show had, and imo, Jimmy was pretty much the reason they all did the best work of their careers on his show. Classic example of how great artists, great professionals. Make the people around them better. The rocket scientists who fired Jimmy ending the show in 1980 when jimmy’s body broke down? Imbeciles. In some ways, a crime they should have lost their jobs over.
@@skywoof7 I recently watched another video with James Garner online and even though he was in a lot pain toward the end of the show, he wanted to complete the season so his cast members could get paid. It just proves the type of character guy he was; by thinking about his cast ahead of his own health.
@@ericrobson4291 Great show!👍
Always seemed such a genuinely nice man. Humble AND a body of work anybody could envy.
Very interesting hearing a true American acting icon speak so eloquently and yet so down to earth...little wonder he was so beloved and so critically acclaimed.
Love this guy, I've seen every episode of Rockford files. And to this day if Rockford comes on I'm watching it.
A true legend. Loved every role he ever played. He was a natural; an incredibly talented and believable actor.
This reminded me of the Clint walker interview
Good people integrity and honesty !
R.I.P. James Gardner you will be missed. Wonderful actor. Always love Rockford and The Notebook.
he was the best. so kind when l met him filming Rockford
Binge watched every episode of The Rockford Files. Feel like watching it all over again.
I am doing right now; almost through season 2. Great series.
First rate acting, dialog, plot, action, comedy. Even the lesser characters were done very competently.
I was a kid when I first started watching Mr Garner, in my lifetime I've never heard one bad comment about him. He was a veteran and served his country honorably a hero, and a very talented actor and from the comments I've heard here from people who say they've actually met him he was a gentleman and a profession. Not enough people like him in this world😊
Maverick the original tv show wouldn't have been worth a dam without Jim he is
Like James Arness.He was
A breed In His own .
R.I.P. Jim,the likes of you will never pass this way again.
Great actor and twice awarded the Purple Heart for wounds as an infantryman in Korea.🇺🇸❤️
i spent a few hours back in the 80s with my cassette telephone answering machine recording the intro to rockford files for my incoming message....lol....
you cant help but respect the man
What a great actor. Rockford files was one of the all time great TV shows as well as Maverick.
Great interview. It's funny that James Garner talks about great stage presence...he filmed the movie Maverick with Mel Gibson and Jodie Foster. What a great performer.
A Good Guy something rare in Hollyweird.
Being a Good guy is Rare, Anywhere. Regarding Hollywood he was Modest, which is Rare there.
John Wayne said Garner was the best actor he ever saw.
Speaking of the Duke, there was an episode in "Maverick" the show where Jim looked like the Duke
Garner was so much better than Wayne, not even in the same class.
Strange considering Garner was far left.
Mark Harrison - Not strange. There was a time when people could disagree politically, but still respect each other. Now disagreeing with someone is equated to hating them.
John Wayne is not a good actor . He always repeat himself in every movie!!!
I loved his character on The Rockford Files. He was not rich, lived in a beat up trailer, got beaten up most of the time, rarely got the girl, & had the weirdest clients.
I watched support your local sheriff that was one of the most funniest movies I ever seen . Be at peace James
He was awesome, so cool, so natural, drove like a demon, got all the ladies, Rockford Ruled, guy drove a Pontiac, had to be a good man
One of my favorite all-time actors. Gorgeous, cool, funny, warm and honest. Loved the Rockford Filles. Thanks for airing this. When was it filmed?
And I forgot another really important asset - his deep, inimitable voice.
Leo Smart This would be around 1994. Both Mel Gibson and Jodie Foster are mentioned. This is probably an interview promoting the movie Maverick.
David B. Finlayson
Yes, the discussion about the L.A. Coliseum and L.A. (Oakland) Raiders supports that, 1994.
amish15552 Thanks. It felt so good to root for an actor who played the awshucks warm-hearted good guy, when you knew he was exactly that way in real life. May he RIP.
I just started watching the Rockford Files...I love his natural acting.Keep resting Mr.Garner✨
A legend love this guy...watch his shows all the time.Brilliant
The Rockford Files is my all-time favorite show FOREVER!!!GOAT!!
Very underrated and under appreciated actor. The film “Pink Jungle” with George Kennedy and Eva Renzi was hilarious. Know a few people who worked behind the scenes in the movie industry and they ones who worked with James Garner never had anything but nice things to say about him.
I liked 'The Wheeler Dealers' and '36 Hours'. A couple of examples of his natural style. Different characters in contrasting roles, you think you're watching a real person unaware that they are 'acting'.
The last of the great ones gone. Luck has been indeed a lady that you loved the best, RIP James!
I grew up watching this man. I watched The Rockford Files as a kid, and I've seen many of his movies. I LOVE him in The Notebook! He was so hot in that movie! I'll miss him very much.
A true Gentleman James Garner. I'm an journeyman actor, I received a callback after auditioning for a part in a movie a few decades ago. Then was both elated and let down to find out they called me back in to be Mr. Garners double. Would have rather got the part, but still lots of hours, met the great man, He never talked down to anyone, generous personality.
Sad day for his many fans',and I've been one since the late 1950's. I really liked this interview, easy, laid back, good interviewer who was respectful, and knowledgeable.
Sad ,sad day. RIP.
Nice interview, Jimmy. Mr. Garner is one of my absolute favorites. Your interview was spot on, sir!
"Egos bigger than their talents".......James Garner telling it like it is.
John Fuentes..love this line.
He was a class act- smart, but not egotistical- warm, and with a great sense of humor.
He was my Dad's favorite actor. They seemed to have a lot in common.
One of my all time favorites. I loved him in the Rockford Files.
Great guy-modest,generous,big hearted.Sorely missed
Always great to watch James in any thing he did. And also the folks he talks about here. All were a very tough act to follow and most times you couldn't They were all great and miss them lots. RIP J.G.
I always got the impression that James Garner was a real good guy by watching his roles. I know it can be deceptive but these interviews confirm that impression. Thanks Jim for the hours of pleasure watching your work.
My 85 yr old mother loved The Notebook and it's one of her favorite films. Garner treated the character with such warmth and class. What's not to love?
loved this man!!!
best kisser west of the mississippi !!
According to Sally Field he was the best guy she ever kissed..
What an inspiration. From a physically abusive home and had to fight is way up every step of the way and he has that calm dignity.
What a bloody great actor.
This is a terrific interview, James Garner really comes across well here and looks to have no ego. Modest, smart, and uber cool. Pb
Loved James Garner, great guy and actor ! Loved him in Murphy's Romance, The Great Escape, and others ! Reminded me of my father !
He did a movie with Sally Field in Florence, Az, the movie was
“Murphy’Romance” Great movie. When I was a child I would watch “Maverick” which was in black and white. Loved this man!
charismatic gentleman.
James Garner is one wonderfully authentic character. he was also a very principled man. anyone who knew him would testify: he was one of the best. EVER.
Wonderful man. He will be missed!
What a lovely man. He reminded me of my father with his square jaw, and the way he wore his hair.
When James Garner died it was like losing my dad all over again.
Reminds me of my dearly departed Father.
I love this interview. Thank you so much for posting it... I'm so glad I found it.
Rest in Peace, Jim. Thanks for the greatness.
James Garner is in a word delightful.
i love him always have and will
RIP Mr. Garner.
he is dead ,, not resting ,,
His type are coming back! Rest assured! RIPJames. I grew up with him and will keep him in my heart.
One of the very best.
He's so right about Spencer Tracy. He was a natural which was rare during Tracy's time. James Garner is one of a kind. Such a natural actor. I never felt that Brando was a natural actor. He had a style for sure but I never viewed him as a natural actor. Love Garner!
Jim Rockford one of the best on screen.......RIP James Garner
Loved him in The Great Escape movie as well as pretty much everything he did. Loved the Rockford files growing up.
He was nice, but didn’t let Hollywood cheat him. He sued several shows for accounting practices and such. He won too!
Rip james, one of my all time faves!
a sad day, but no one gets out of this world alive. James Garner was a great actor and left all of us a film legacy that we can all access and enjoy!! My childhood was formed in the Maverick and Rockford television series and still hols well, even today!!!
Loved James Garner in all of the movies and t.v. shows I watched.
Legend
I've been researching James Garner cuz I've been watching the old Maverick series. He was an awesome human and a wonderfully subtle actor. I admire his life story!!💙💙
Master of the J turn, also known as "The Rockford".
What a down to earth man. Joined the Merchant Marines but suffered from seasickness so joined the Army. Korean War veteran wounded twice, and came from a Cherokee mother that died 5 weeks after he was born coming from humble beginnings in Oklahoma. Naturally the media hardly said a word whenever he passed because he wasn't keen on their agenda and general 'Hollyweirdness'. Garner was very versatile and you never saw him-just the character that he poured himself into.
There was no Cherokee blood in the family, it was just a myth. People have looked into his family tree and his mother and her family were all white.
Love James Garner, he was an excellent actor. RIP Jim
Mel Gibson styled his western actor after James Garner. Two great actors!!
Whoever posted this did so immediately after Garners death.
James Garner passed in 2014. He was one of the smoothest actors I've ever seen. He could ad lib without effort and it always be 100% gold. 💕
Sorry he’s gone what a gentleman 🙏🙏🙏i’am sure his family is heartbroken 😭 God Bless you 🙏
Rest in paradise
Indeed!

He seemed like a great guy, I really liked the Documentary he did on racing the "Lemans" series...they lost, but he was so humble and real about the whole affair. RIP
He was such a great man. 💖
RIP JIM, ANOTHER ONE OF THE GOOD GUYS IS CALLED BACK HOME. GOD BLESS YOU AN YOUR FAMILY.
I grew up watching Maverick, and so when Jim Garner was one of the celebrities at a local golf tournament, a few friends and I - about 12 years old or so - went. Jim was as warm and gracious to us as possible. He and Danny Thomas were the most relaxed and real people there that day. A wonderful actor - the movie “Maverick” was pure delight.
Born in the '60s and watched Mr. Garner throughout my childhood. The Rockford Files was the first detective show I watched and truly understood, as a young kid. I love the fact that in this day and age we can stream old shows, and I am able to not just watch re-runs of him, but watch season 1, episode 1 and watch the series in its entirety. I don't watch every day/night, but when I'm jonesin' for some Jimmy, I know where to go...
