Did Johnny Carson Steal All His Characters?

Joe Piscopo plays Johnny Carson playing Art Fern, accusing Johnny Carson of stealing all of his best characters from other performers. It's quite an onion to peel back. Piscopo of course did the impression on Saturday Night Live, a show which probably wouldn't exist if Carson hadn't pulled The Tonight Show out of the weekend slot and championed the new show.

Hard to put blame on him solely as he had a staff of writers who helped come up with (or take) stuff. That being said, most of the bits mentioned above pretty much date back to vaudeville and were used by many others comics as time went on, so they weren’t the first to rehash it.
