You really missed our beautiful landside here like the mountains in the west of austria or the region of lake like Salzkammergut, best known international Hallstatt or in carinthia,...
Much to read, I still hope it's worth it It took me work to write it! I'm sure many people are wondering, what the actualy difference between Germany and Austria is. So I thought this through and decided to write everything down, I came up with. (Sorry if there are any mistakes, English is not my native language, because it's German of course that's why I'm able to do this this accurately(at least I hope so, I don't want to offend anyone)) I'm Austrian, by the way)First of all, there's a literally huge size difference. Austria has an inhabitance rate of around 8 million, while German has 80 million. The population of Germany is 10 times larger than the one of Austria. This makes Germany more influential and important to the rest of the world. Germany is also more industrial than Austria. Austria is a very mountainy country, that's crossed by numerous rivers. Germany just doesn't offer so many rivers. This is why Germany needs nuclear power plants, while Austria is one of the only countries, that doesn't have a single nuclear power plant, Austria gains all its electricity from hydraulic and thermal power stations. Also, Germany has many beaches, while Austria is a landlocked country. So there would be this geographically differences. And the dialect is of course, different, too. Austrian people uses some different words than German people do and they pronounce things different. German German sounds more harsh than Austrian German, therefore Austrian German sounds pretty crude and rustic. (This sure is related because Germany has always been more important and the German dialect sticks more to High German, which is of course more harsh and less rustic)). Because of that I think Germans are more likely to have a worse pronunciation when it's about English. Basically all Germans I've met speak a worse English than my friends (and of course I met more Austrians..). Also Germany has a different cuisine and a few other cultural habits, that either Austria doesn't have or that Austria have, but therefore Germany hasn't. Bavarian, by the way, belongs to Germany but it's more related to Austria, when it's about cuisine, the dialect and the cultural habits. (by the way the cultural habits (drinking beer, wearing garbs, yodelling also belongs more to Bavaria/Austria.. therefore the stereotypes about the harsh dialect sticks more to the well.. „German part of Germany“.) Of course, because of they're neighbour countries and.. same language and stuff they share a lot of history, but on the other hand, there are so many differences! I wouldn't even be able to list all of them right now! And to the politics in Austria and Germany: They have a lot in common, again. They have a very similar election system, they even have the same parties, BUT on the other hand the same party that exists in Germany stands for different things in Austria, even though it has the same name. Also the political attitude in general is different. When it's about laws, Austria is more loose than Germany. Some movies you could watch in Germany with 16 years, but in German you'd have to be 18. Also it's more easy to get alcohol or cigarettes in Austria than in Germany, even though when you're under 16 (cigarrates, not as strong alcohol like beer or wine are both legal from 16 years in both countries) or 18 (you'll need to be 18 for hard liquor in both countries). You could say, Germans are more strict and Austrians are more loose. (I'll come back to this soon) So now to the socially differences(Please don't take especially this point that serious, because it's based on own impressions, experiences and also a bit on stereotypes and of course, I'm generalizing a lot now but still I think that many Austrians and Germans would be able to relate to this, because it's true for the majority. (Maybe more Austrians though, because of the size difference I think more Austrians have visited Germany than the other way round)): Austrians are more impatient and whiny than Germans, they sure are more likely to complain about things which aren't so bad after all. Even though the financial of Austrian people aren't worse, maybe even better in some parts. I've already written that Austrian people are more loose than German people. So therefore, German people are more likely to pull things through. Especially when it's about laws and politics again. In Austria here we have the important „half way-solutions“. We have the idea of changing something, we think it's good and we want to establish it, but we don't enforce it totally, we only enforce it a bit.. well „the half way“. For example: I brought up first, that there's no nuclear power plant in Austria. Well that's not totally true. We have one, but has never been started. We had the idea of making one, we thought we'd need one, but then we decided „Oh wait a moment.. is that really such a good idea? I mean.. nuclear waste, MCAs and stuff..“ and then we made a rare (we normally don't do this, Austria's not the Swiss) plebiscite and finally decided, that we don't need it. That's basically how Austrian politics works. (Germany has one story therefore with a planned and never build airport, but that's a different situation and also, there are more examples of such things in Austria) And you know, there is this stereotype that Germans have no humour. And I don't think it's really true, but it's not totally wrong either. Because of this what I just mentioned, that Germans are more strict, Germans may seem less humerous. Austrian people tend to take their lives easier. There's a pretty good joke about it, which points this out pretty well: A German and an Austrian are locked into a room on a sinking ship. The German is like: „Well, this situation is serious, but not hopeless.“, while the Austrian's like: „This situation is hopeless, but not serious.“
there were many gold medal winners after the one they mentioned they didnt need to go back that far almost every year someone from Autria wins a gold medal in a skiing competition
@ Famous Austrians: Siegmund Freud (Psychoanalyst) Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Composer) Johann Strauss sen. (Composer) Johann Strauss jun. Ludwig Van Beethoven was not Austrian but German. I think he is often referred Austrian because he learned and became the great componist in Austria, former the capital of music in Europe.
Austria had several amazing inventors: Besides Madersberger, there was Peter Mitterhofer, who is one of the inventors of the modern typewriter or Josef Ressel, who invented the ship propreller. Most of them were hardly recognized and died poor, which is quite typical for how imperial Austria treated anything "modern"...
The Brit sounds to me to be saying "cemetary" as "symmetry". And I am absolutely sure that it is common to say it that way in the UK as it is to say "aluminum" as "aluminium".
Most Austrians have never seen that movie/musical, some don't even know it exists. I only know it because my friends from England kept talking about it. There's an old Austrian-German film called "Die Trapp Familie", which is better known here.

„German part of Germany“.)
Of course, because of they're neighbour countries and.. same language and stuff they share a lot of history, but on the other hand, there are so many differences! (I'll come back to this soon)
So now to the socially differences(Please don't take especially this point that serious, because it's based on own impressions, experiences and also a bit on stereotypes and of course, I'm generalizing a lot now but still I think that many Austrians and Germans would be able to relate to this, because it's true for the majority.
(Germany has one story therefore with a planned and never build airport, but that's a different situation and also, there are more examples of such things in Austria)
And you know, there is this stereotype that Germans have no humour.
I love Austria, and I find love here

its funn to whatch such a video about my home country
Austria had several amazing inventors: Besides Madersberger, there was Peter Mitterhofer, who is one of the inventors of the modern typewriter or Josef Ressel, who invented the ship propreller. Most of them were hardly recognized and died poor, which is quite typical for how imperial Austria treated anything "modern"...
@ Schönbrunn Zoo:
It is not only the worlds oldest but also one of the most modern zoos nowadays.
I just failed art school in Austria, I’m about to go berserk if this goes any further.
The Sound of Music is set in Austria
The Brit sounds to me to be saying "cemetary" as "symmetry". And I am absolutely sure that it is common to say it that way in the UK as it is to say "aluminum" as "aluminium".
What about Larissa Marolt. She is in the Thumbnail but not in the video 😥

even thou you forgot that the sound of music (a hit movie until today) was took placed to austria.
Most Austrians have never seen that movie/musical, some don't even know it exists. I only know it because my friends from England kept talking about it. There's an old Austrian-German film called "Die Trapp Familie", which is better known here.
