I'm a guitar player who writes and plays prog, and I can't shred worth anything. I'm more into writing unique and interesting parts. And I'm fine with being just an okay guitarist.
Same. My soloing tends to be more minimalist or punk inspired than anything shreddy and i'm fine with that. Shredding has never been my bag most of the time.
I just saw Slayer on Monday and my wrist hurt just watching Kerry and Gary play for 1.5 hours. Decades of practice, glad I got to see them before they stopped touring.
First test: too much motion from the elbow, it’s why you tend to have to shake out your arm after every test. The best way to practice this exercise is to focus and relax your muscle, meditate as you do this exercise, slow it down really slow and focus on your articulation with every note, the tension being contracted in your muscles all around your body, not just your arm, as well as good controlled breathing. Remember to relax and always try to release the tension in your forearm muscles. Hope that helps man!
I consider myself "in shape" when I'm at sextuplets at 120 bpm and quadruplets at 144. That's the baseline I need to hit before I'm improving speed rather than catching up. It takes one to three weeks to get to my personal peak speed. Slayer taught me something when I was a teen: speed leaves. Unless you practice for peak speed all the time, you'll lose 10-30 bpm. For me, it's not worth keeping my top speed vs. practicing to improve at the instrument overall, because if I want my top speed, I can just take those 20-40 hours required and it'll come back.
For me, because literally everyone cares: Open string trem - 200 Yeheah - 100 4 notes/string - 185 Bonus: Triplets 5 string sweep: 245 Bonus #2: One note/string alternate picking 8th notes: 215 To save your shoulder, minimize arm movement and pick from the wrist. Just a lil tip for ya
I know you were gunning it, but try focussing on using your wrist motion more than your arm, that's why your shoulder got tired. Also maybe try opening your bottom three fingers, that can help with balancing your picking hand. Stretching helps a lot too. Miles Dimitri Baker is a great guitarist and has incredible technique when it comes to this specific style of playing.
It seems you’re picking the string rather hard when at a high tempo. I can guarantee you’d be much faster if you loosen your grip a tad and don’t fight the string as much
I spent soo much time in the period between 2015 and 2018 to learn dream theater solos, the result is that now my speed swings within demiseviquaver at 110 or 120. Some days less, some days it's more like 125, it depends on how much I practice eheh
Hey I think you would love a band called the daughters, they are totally bonkers and a heavy metal band, their best album you won’t get what you want is fantastic and changes so much while still sounding like the same album
Something that helps me is switching to my left leg (assuming you play right handed, right leg if you're a lefty like mike) puts your shoulder under less stress
The down picking would be A LOT easier with a low strap as it transfers all the energy into just your wrist so that your shoulder doesn't waste energy.
Speed comes from finding the right position for your hand. If you bend your wrist and slant your pick you would be able to play at high speed for hours. It may feel unusual but trust me, the entire mechanics of what you are doing will change.
This was an honest video (I give you that), I really hope you are doing "better" in terms of your technique. However, man...to be a kid that judges and criticizes prominent bands or as the Doors, Nirvana, and more (Although, you are free to dislike these bands...it's your right!) you have a big mouth, and maybe it's just a phase...hopefully. Keep practicing!
I agree! I’m new to his channel, and from all the shit he talks, and a lot of the time I get it, I figured he’d absolutely rip. But I’ve looked around and tried to find something impressive and I just can’t find it. Big shit talker
Wow, I was surprised with yours and my speed. I maxed my metronomes 4/4 at 250 with single alternate picking. Hit the wall at 115 whiskeys per minute And I couldn’t even start at the speed you started with at the alternate exercise. I don’t even practice the warm up exercise, I’m mainly an economy picker. Maybe I’d be good in a black metal band?
spend a few weeks with paul gilbert, rusty cooley. john petrrucci, eddy vh, john taylor and Timo Tolkki, if your fingers dont fall off. you will get faster.
You're quite good player you should be lead player for the band. And also, you don't to have solos in every song.In some songs you can just have some cool harmony solos. You surely know the song of Avenged Sevenfold-Critical Acclaim(hope i wrote it properly)that song doesn't really have that classic synyster gate flashy solo,it's harmony solo and it sounds awesome. And there are some killer songs that don't have a solo in it.🤘🤘🤘🤘🤟🤟🤟🤟🤟🤟🤟
I see alot of "trash" comments. But really you are not that bad. Yes your wrist technique is kinda meh or unorthodox, but the speed is pretty average. I think many play these exercises with distortion which changes the playing alot, (Especially the last 16-note exercise)..
I was surprised to learn I can alternate pick faster than you. I’m far more amateur but I practice playing a lot of Slayer and such so you build up a lot of endurance and speed. I’m the opposite of you, I’m better at alternate pick shred than legato shred
Your shoulder hurts because you keep playing in that pose. You should keep guitar between your legs like classical guitarists do. Then there is no extra tension in your shoulder and you can play way longer. I learnt this when i started to play V guitars and now im playing all guitars sitting down like they were a v or classical guitar. So much easier for my arm.
i think you should change your right hand technique man, using your whole hand is not really efficient, better try a wrist technique or at least muscles below the elbow, it will improve your stamina, just a friendly suggestion
There is no real point in going higher and higher on the metronome and getting it sometimes. You have to be able to do it consistently everytime. Is your pick angle and slant correct, it sounds rather pokey, correct pick angle will give you a compressed sound. Try playing six notes per string with a finger pattern rather than open. Try chromatic rather than that tired old 1234 exercise.
I'm curious about your thoughts on 2020's pathetic Grammy nominations. Considering the Rock/Metal bands are already vastly under-represented, how do artists like the 1975, Gary Clark Jr and Brittany Howard get nominated for a ROCK Grammy? It infuriates me beyond words

Prog is also my fav genre

It seems you’re picking the string rather hard when at a high tempo. I can guarantee you’d be much faster if you loosen your grip a tad and don’t fight the string as much
