You've missed the entire point of the xe fuji line. I am an xe-2 owner and have taken it all over the world. It's slim, it's subtle, it has a lovely evf placement, and it's designed for manual or auto focus lens uers where your aperture dial is often on the lens itself. From a street photography standpoint, the xe cameras are perfect, they are designed after film cameras, you have your shutter dial on top, to quickly adapt your exposure without using the menu at all, set your lens f stop for the day, and iso for the sun, and all you'd ever need to do is occasionally change your shutter which cam be done from this dial. In essence, this is a photographers camera, what does that mean? Well, you have less options, you need to figure out how you want to expose your scene and subject, before you head out into the street, there is an intuition there, using experience and knowledge to set your cameras settings and not having to rely on a bunch of functions from the digital age. Imho for travel or street photography, there are no better options that the xe line, they give you all the basic functions of a camera, in the most classic and utilitarian package modeled after the original film cameras the golden age of photography. At this price point it's also a no brainier.
Fully agree, same way I view the xe line. I have XE3 to supplement my XT3 and it’s perfect 2 camera setup. However, the xe4 isn’t worth an upgrade for me. My main issue is that XE3 gives me sufficient pro/manual features in very small package which is what I want from crop sensor camera and why I select Fuji. So stripping the line from key functionality is not for me although I appreciate that aesthetic appeal is more valuable to others.
Honestly I just want the X-E3 body with screen, sensor en software of the X-E4. Everything else is just better on the X-E3, small things like the fact that it has a thumb grip, and I use the focus select a lot
I have a xe3 and love it. was looking forward to the xe4 as "xe3 but better" but they botched that. if they had taken the xe3 and just upgraded the sensor, given it a moveable screen, and brought it to current software, it would have been an immediate purchase for me. between this and how they couldn't get the "work as a webcam" working for the xe3 while other manufacturers had no problem getting that out for lower end cameras... not sure i want to keep supporting fuji with my money in the future. don't reward bad behavior.
I completely agree. All I really wanted was the xe3 with the new screen. I love the layout and feel of the xe3 it’s almost perfect. Here’s hoping the xe5 hits the mark....just 3 years or so to wait😉
@@nigelward5189 That's just cruel! Because I'm selfish I hope the xe4 doesn't do well and they reverse course for the xe5. Hopefully it does well enough that they don't just discontinue the xe line but not well enough that they're rewarded for (in my opinion) bad behavior.
I agree with everything that you've said but I also adapted incredibly quickly to the X-E4, and it becomes just as easy to operate once you re-learn the language. I'm a big fan of the minimal look and feel.
@@WesKriesel you can use dial on front for ss and iso use the top function button to change focus modes so look at it as moving switch from front to top. Simple.
@@WesKriesel You could totally do that I just so rarely ever change it - and it takes 2s in the custom menu for the rare times I do (like switching to an old manual lens)
@@ogonzilla honestly if the XT5 is more like the XS10 I’m all for it. I have the GFX100S coming for review and I’m excited for that minimal layout as well. Love the digital top dials.
GREAT video Omar. I could not agree more. Focus setting switch? Just works. Rear command dial? Just works. There comes a point when you strip down enough features that the item becomes less usable as a result. There's an understated benefit of haptic UI controls just working by touch without having to look at them -- and not have to goof around with a touchscreen for everything.
I think this is a generational thing as well though, while I agree with you and Omar, I feel my friends would rather everything be through a much more optimized screen like a smartphone almost.
My X-E3 display broke a few months ago, and I was thinking of getting an X-E4. But I agree with you Omar. The little things are important. I use the focus knob, the back dial, and even the thumb+Front-grip all the time when walking and holding it dangling on my side. I don’t use the front dial at all actually, lol. And X-S10 feels like NO because of the dreaded move to PASM which to me never felt right. I’m wondering if this is due to new leadership in the company? In any case, I’ll stick to my broken X-E3 for photography.
+1 the physical controls are what brought me to Fuji, and hoped this would replace my X-T20; LOVE the Auto switch on that camera. Own the X-T3, X-T4, x100F - don’t want to lose my D-pad and switches.
I couldn’t agree with you more. I just picked up a used X-E2S and I’m loving all the dials and buttons. What I’d like is an X-E2 body with a flip screen and the latest sensor and software. It would be the ideal camera for me.
@@Markeymarc321 The only problem for me is that the x-e2s isn't a very good night camera, there is a lot of noise in the shots. Jacking up the ISO gives greater noise on top of the already existing noise in low light photography. Apart from this it's a great camera. I only use it during the day unfortunately! I use my gf's samsung s9 if she wants any nightshots for her social media.
If you already don’t have and need that 27mm f2.8, new “WR” pancake lens, I think it is worth getting that x-e4 lens kit, since it is cheaper as a bundle. Of course, if you already own x-e3 or x-t20, it might be hard to justify getting (or upgrading) to x-e4. However, the flip screen and updated video features are very tempting. I think anyone who needs more compact (than x-s10) hybrid camera, this camera needs to be much more considered.
I second this!!!! I bought my X-T20 watching your videos, I wanted to switch from my Nikon D3000 to something else... I love my Fuji and learning every day more with your Videos!
and most of non-purchases of X-E4 will also be inspired from him. Nevertheless not a loss for fuji as like me one will go for other options. Like I go for T-30 now after seeing this video
I wonder how many people you inspired to get the x-t 20. A lot I would imagine. I am one of them and enjoying it so much. This video made me feel once again that I had chosen well.
Exactly. It's like photographers have never shot something that's out of their way so they can focus on creating. A lot of what's said here is like getting ANY new camera "you get used to it" and then it's your new normal.
As someone who’s shot with the x100f and has now owned the x100v for about a year now... I don’t miss the d pad what so ever. I enjoy having all that space for my thumb without worrying about hitting a button on accident. Using the joy stick for everything is super easy and simple.
@@Holl.Mvrk. I find it funny when people mention the joystick, as if it's a replacement for the d-pad. My X-T3 has a joystick and a d-pad. So did the X100f. A d-pad offers 4 directional buttons which can be programmed, it has little to do with a joystick. It's like saying you don't need a spoon because you've already got a bicycle. I want both, a d-pad and a joystick. Look at the X-E4, they're throwing nearly all buttons and dials overboard, what a shame.
@@jangeboers1984 hahaha a little dramatic with the analogy, but I can see why people are upset to lose a few programmable buttons, for me personally I rarely used them for moving in menus or programmable buttons. I don’t see the need to have 10+(exaggeration) programmable buttons on cameras. I set up my camera before I go shoot and rarely mess with anything besides the typical ISO, aperture and SS. Maybe having all those buttons is helpful for people who do video ? But let’s be real...If you’re shooting with an ex or x100 body....why are you using it for video when your iPhone/android in your pocket could capture better video lol I see you feel very strongly about the D-pad though, so seems you’re best suited to stick it out with the XT3 until they drop the Xh2 and see what that has to offer. Hopefully a D-Pad. 🤷🏻♂️
@@jangeboers1984 I also think Fujifilm is trying to put a strong separation between a hybrid camera and a stills camera. As well as trying to capture some of the market of the newbies coming into both video and photography.
The X-A7 and X-T200 lines have been discontinued. So the X-E4 has now been positioned as the Fujifilm entry level camera. So it now has an entry level physical design. I wouldn't be surprised if their entire lineup is revamped and renamed after the X-H2 (or its equivalent) is released. The X-S10 is evidence of that.
I know it's a year later but just to add my comments. I have a selection of Fuji cameras and use the XT3/4 and soon XH2. However, I bought the XE4 exactly because it's so small and minimalist. I use it for travel and quick street shots (auto ISO, AFC all the time and just use joystick for AF area and lens/shutter controls). All functions are quickly accessed via the menu button anyway. So I can use the pancake lens for most travel shots but if I'm doing an excursion that needs a telephoto then I can use it without having to pack another camera body (also people just seem to respond to it well, it's not a phone and not a large paparazzi lens system!!) So maybe I'm the target user!
Ive been rocking the XT-2 for the last two years it goes with me just about every time I leave the house. I couldn't be happier with a camera, it has everything I need and want. From the excellent image quality to the fun dials and buttons even the video features are sufficient for most peoples needs. Lastly it doesn't have that ugly, flimsy and annoying flip out screen.
I bought the xpro3 and haven’t had any interest in other cameras. Weather sealed, dual sd card, and excellent picture output, what else do I want more. Oh the successor to x70 / xf10!
Can't know if it is the right type camera for you but when it is you'll love it. Had the X100F, now have the X100V, had a lot of differentcameras in the past and the X100V is a keeper. Love mine.
I purchased an infrared converted X-T20 and didn't realize how much I'd like it. I have an X-T3 for my main body and if I didn't have that I'd probably get another X-T20 for regular photography.
The X-E4 is meant to be an very compact, photo-leaning camera. It's $849 - why would you expect all the same features that come on the larger models? It's mostly still there, just different user interface. People are too hung up on all the buttons, joysticks, back scratchers and everything else today. Way too much emphasis on tech. It has a great sensor, it looks great, and takes great pics - I personally don't need anything else. I will likely buy one as a backup to my Leica M10. Why? Simple, small, works great with an adapter on M lenses. I applaud Fuji for providing options that cover the spectrum of cameras and their consistent use of sensors. So image quality is not the deciding factor. If the X-E4 was a large as the X-Pro3 or X-T4, I would pass due to size. Viewfinder? Meh. As long as I can see the image I'm fine. I don't need to be able to read someone's underwear tag. Sorry, my opinion and YMMV, but I prefer to see more emphasis on IQ than all the kitchen sink stuff.
Because XE1, XE2, XE3 were not meant to be compact, and not entry level cameras. XE1, 2 were considered semi flagship. XE1 was as good as XPro1 with some bug fixes and for the people who didn't care about OVF. XE2 was also at that point a very good X cam until they started to introduce XT series on the SLR side. XE4 doesn't have to be as large as XPro or XT. Besides, if they really want to make it a photo-learning compact camera, they could do this with an XM2 or XA8, or just like XS10, make it a new series.
To add to that, I think removing so many buttons can kind of ruin the look of a camera... Like the leica camera's: they look great, but they also kind of lack personality for me? I actually personally prefer having all the buttons with all the little markings on them.
Completely agree. I have both the X-T20 and X-T30 and while I like the new sensor on the T30, and AF performance, the lack of D-Pad for example is really annoying. And the cursor/joystick whatever we call it these days... its in a really bad place. It should be on a higher position to be more accessible to the thumb... but its placed in a way that makes me have to make an effort to reach it. And seems that X-E4 its more of the same. Love the X-S10 grip btw. The "perfect" camera would be the dials and buttons of X-T20 on the X-S10 camera body and sensor :)
@@fredbloggs545 Fuji is looking for a more comprehensive and less technical market with this model, simplicity and frindly user at its maximum. My fear is if they extend this policy to x-t range. For me, in this case, less is not more. The greatnesses of photography is a love/hobby/passion for all tastes and uses.
@@fredbloggs545 are we talking about fuji or other brands? I don't want to know what other brands do, at this moment i use fuji, the day i use another brand, I start thinking about that brand.
@@1DSlayer Fuji have always styled their RF cameras on Leica, hence the comparison. If you are saying that Fuji are "losing its analog identity", then Leica must be too, yes? But have you ever heard anybody accuse Leica of doing that just because their cameras have few controls? No. Your comment makes no sense as analogue cameras have LESS controls than digital! I'd argue that removing controls makes it more like an analogue camera.
How could you Omar? My first Fiji was the X-E1, and i will buy the X-E4. I own the X-T3, the X-S10, i bought the X-T20, at the same time you bought yours, took it to Iceland, and have followed you ever since! I am looking forward to get the X-E4. Anyway thanks for your videos, i always enjoy your insight and musings. Keep it coming.
You being an avid Fuji owner what is drawing you to it? I'm asking only because I've only been playing with an X-T1 since December and honestly like the idea of the simplified body. You have shutter speed dial, lens has aperture, you can set the front dial to ISO which is the least changed setting for me, and it has a directional for focus points. Program a button for focus mode and you're done. I own two Sony cameras so if I want a million buttons I have them there. The lack of weather sealing is my only reserve with this.
TLDR; people don't like a minimalist camera that's minimalist. I sold my X-T3 for the X-E4 and I see myself getting out more because of the small size and simplicity.
@@Hightower2804TP How are you getting on with the X-E4? Had mine a couple of weeks and it's a bit quicker than my X-E3. Being able to save various custom settings is great, it was really frustrating that the X-E3 couldn't save white balance shift to custom settings. The real surprise for me was when I was first out shooting with a manual lens and realised you could save the focus mode to a custom setting. I now have a custom slot specifically for the manual lens using a particular B&W film recipe with it. Switch to that custom slot and the camera goes into manual focus too! The other thing they have fixed is that in addition to having C1, C2, C3 etc, they got rid of the silly BASE confusion and now call the default one "A". Much clearer in the Q menu now and it is a good idea that the upper left Q menu item is fixed to the custom slot that you are using, you can clearly see that it is set to "A", C1, C2 etc. Fujifilm have put some thought into SooC jpeg users. It is a much better experience than my X-E3. Of course reviewers are a pretty clueless lot so don't mention this stuff.
@@fredbloggs545 I can't really say too much on the software stuff since I have it for like a week or so and the weather here has been shit. I did own the X-E3 at some point and I can confirm the improvements you've mentioned. The X-T3 had the same custom features to some extent. I really like the X-E4 from a style standpoint. It always felt kinda uncomfortable to carry around the X-T3 with my strip because the eyepiece rubbed against my side all the time. The lack of a grip is actually a good thing in my opinion since it is perfectly fine to hold with a small lens and the ability to give it a grip is actually a huge benefit since you can have a smaller or bigger camera wherever you want. If you want some actual good thoughts on this camera, check out Mattias Burling and his mini-review :)
Agree with you completely, Omar. This was the camera I thought they had a shot at making almost perfect. But they went a simplified way. The focus mode selector and rear command dial are the two biggest “?” for me.
Totally agree with you. One of the main reasons I got into Fuji cameras (besides your channel :) was external dials and being able to switch things without looking (really helps when you have bad eye sight :) ). It seems that they are moving away from this philosophy in more and more of their cameras. I switched from x-t20 to x100v and I love the camera, but I really miss a D-pad even though I've had the camera for almost a year. I used it to switch photometry mode, auto ISO, film sims, etc. without looking or having to go to the menu. Using touch screen for that is not as convenient, unreliable and problematic in cold weather. Thanks for keeping the channel going! I love watching your videos because you talk about photography experience and not about the endless lists of specs. Your joy and sense of humor are very much appreciated! Great content! Keep it up!
I am an unofficial member of Fujifilm Anonymous, and I have tried to follow the 12-Step Program for curbing my compulsion regarding Gear Acquisition Syndrome (GAS). I’m really not interested in making light of people who struggle with addictive behavior, but I really had the fever for the X-E4 bad the past two weeks, with my hand twitching between Amazon and B&H. I do not need another Fuji camera - especially one so stripped down like the X-E4, plus the added costs for a handgrip … a thumb grip, which is just another shakedown for money. Your video brought me to my senses. Thank you for “talking me down.” The fever is over, and I feel better now. Keep up the good work. Gracias por todo.
I happened upon this old post, once again, and I can say that about every negative point you make disappears by using the XE4. Initially I agreed with you, but after giving my XE3 to a friend who broke his Sony, I did buy the XE4 with the updated 27mm lens. I fairly quickly found ways to customize the camera to my liking. A great help was the spreadsheet I keep with settings for my XT3, X100F, and XE3 to approximate similar function behaviors from model to model. The XE4's joystick has replaced both the D-Pad and the rear wheel. The front wheel can be pressed to use different functions, and the SCM switch became a single swipe down on the rear screen. Yes, buttons are fun, but in all honesty, I almost always leave my camera in Manual mode, with back-button focus, autofocus, and lens aperture selection. The XE was and is perfect for candid photography, but handles a big zoom just as well. I wish the XE5 will have IBIS and I dream it inherits the XT3/XH1 rear screen for vertical "twin lens reflex" shooting… Why not have a look at your favorite KEH to see what they have? I’m pretty sure you’ll fall in love once you set it up to your liking. After all, every new camera, or different manufacturer prompts a learning curve, but aside from the Sony A7C, which is bigger and heavier, I don’t see anything else that’s current compete with the XE4 for size and price.
Finally a youtuber who recognizes that the x-e4 has been reduced too much. 👍 I've made an extra video on the subject but probably not enough people see it. but I'm glad that at least you omar has spoken out on the subject. 😀 [...]
Great video, nobody mentions the view mode button which I use all the time without looking. It's too convenient to give up. I have noticed a few that think they removed too much but more now that more reviews are coming out. Also earned a subscriber :)
@@Autumn-Foxxo yes that fuji of all things have omitted the view mode button is really a mistake. at least omar says his opinion about it. 😀 cool, nathan that you have subscribed to my channel.
I also totally agree with your assessment of the X-E4. Probably well designed by Fujifilm for beginners, but this camera is no longer an ideal 2nd camera body for more advanced or professional photographers (like my X-E3 is for my X-Pro2, as a rangefinder-style camera fan).
totally agree, it's like a Fuji's strategy to lure user to buy their professional camera by removing all the necessary functions in their semi pro and entrance cameras
My X-E4 arrived today and I agree with your first point, the focus mode switch is dearly missed. but I bought this as an every day carry photography (jpeg) camera and most likely not going to use it the same way you maybe intended to. Anyway, I have other Fujifilm cameras to play with for video and more professional stuff. This is just an every day carry for me and I think for that, it's great. Love your thoughts on this.
Great video Omar. I agree about the controls. I was going to add an X-Pro3 to my existing kit of X-Pro2, X-T2 and X-T3 and pre-ordered it even before it was officially announced. But when I got the opportunity to handle one at the new Fuji Store here in London and saw that new screen and the lack of the 'D'-Pad I cancelled the order.
I have an X-E3, and use the back dial, AF switch, EVF button, and Q button. All of these were removed, and Q button put in a bad place on top. No grip is bad too. I had to get the extra grip/tripod mount for my X-E3 to hold it good. I think the X-T30 ii is now the next iteration of X-E3. It still has everything X-E3 has.
Great thoughts man! Been thinking of adding a camera to my XT30. I’m choosing between the XS10 and XE4, but I see that the XE4 had too many controls removed. I love the rangefinder form and flip up screen but too much were taken for “simplicity”
Unlike you I can't wait for the X-E4 and here's why. 1. It's not weather sealed. I live where 80 is a common temp. 100 is not unusual. At these high temps the camera needs to have a way to remove heat. Sealing it is great for you but not here in the desert. 2. Less dials and switches means more space for heat. Maybe helps keep the internat temp down. 3. Silver top plate helps reflect heat off the camera. 4. This is 2021 not 1941. Dials and little buttons may look retro to you but seriously look at old film cameras. They didn't have all those buttons and dials. One of the best design features of all Fujifiln cameras is the quick menu. Now add the My Menu and yes it is a little slower but really should you really be changing stuff in the middle of a shoot. So I'm really looking forward the the X-E4. I'm thinking it's going to be a really cool camera. Pun intended.
Good point! I have a similar way of thinking. And it is about being "tac-tile": muscle-memory, neat reassuring clicks, the sensation of being in control, even with your eye glued to the viewefinder. This makes it "your shot", "your picture". Too much menu access make me feel like I am working on my computer...
but the xt2/20 does not have new film simulations... for casual/hobbyist shooter like me who dont like using PS/LR in post, latest xe4 or x100v is better with more simulations to play with
Not only that, but the X-E4 has the ability to save WB shifts to each custom settings slot and brings things like Clarity setting and finer control over grain (as well as better AF of course). There is a lot to the X-E4 firmware that doesn't get mentioned because reviews concentrate too much on the obvious exterior changes that anybody can see without needing to watch a YT video. The X-E4 is going to be a fantastic rangefinder style ILC camera for people who want pre-set film simulations and like loading their own custom recipes. I am swapping my X-E3 to an X-E4 the day it is for sale.
For this video alone I now respect you a lot Omar, you're one of the few people on the camera review world with a large audience that is capable of being really critical when reviewing a new piece of equipment and saying "hey this is great, yes, but they have taken away so many things that it is no longer something that I need or would use over this 4 year old camera" Many youtubers out there would simply say something like "some things have been taken away, BUT LOOK AT ALL THIS THAT HAVE BEEN PUT IN ON IT, and if you want some of those extra options you can easily pay for these extra accessories with a premium price"
Thanks for the review! I have tried both x-t30 ii and x-e4 as my first Fuji camera. On x-t30 I need glasses to see the digits on dials; x-e4 dials were a little bit bigger. Will be saving for x-t5 I think.
Hi Omar, thanks again for another nice video! I think your love for the X-T20 is just too strong to fall in love with another camera model. I can absolutely relate to that. 😌
makes sense. xt-3 still the single best photog purchase based (somewhat) on your recommendation. hope they take the feedback because we all love functional minimalism
I completely agree with you Omar. I cannot deal with the touch screen - as soon as I get a Fuji camera with it, I switch it off. But then I don’t have a D pad to replace it. I have an X-100V but I use my older X-100F more often for this reason. Also, the placement of the joystick is an ergonomic error. It’s too hard to stretch the thumb down to reach it. I sold my X-T30 for similar reasons: awkward joystick, touch screen, etc. For me, the X-T2 and the X-100F offer the most ergonomically comfortable experience.
Omar 🖐😄 first time for me and first time using fuji system I am about to get xt4 with 16 80 kit and 35 mm, f2 with 23mm f2 all I do is 3 things 1-street photography 2- product photography 3- filmography (short films) Am I On the right track
I agree with you, I was hoping for the XE range to continue and got excitied over the announcement of the XE4. However I am very dissapointed with it's ergonomics and seriously thinking of rebuying an XT20, (which I had and sold last year), they are an excellent value now at just 349 UK pounds.
Talking about the hype! Thanks alot, this video made me love my X-T2 even more. I wanted to sell it and get an X-E4 but you opened up my eyes. KEEP IT UP!
I recently bought the XT 20 and love it - I totally agree with you about the XE 4 - the auto switch is great to have when you need to take images very quickly
I'm torn too...I own a xe3 and LOVE it! Thought on upgrading...but haven't yet... maybe I'll save and go for the xpro3...your are your thoughts? Save to get the xpro3, right?
Im thinking of buying XS10 but im not sure on what lens to go with. I will mostly use it for videos, family outing and portraits. Could you kindly tell which lens to go with ? The options i have or thought of. Xc 15-45 kit lens Xf18-55 XF16-80 Or body only and cheaper XC35mm prime lens ? Please kindly give your advice
completely agree, I recently picked up my XE-2 and realized there was a custom button for everything. 10 customizable buttons, plus a built in flash, Q button, replay, rear dial for instant punch in plus all the usual manual dials like exposure comp, shutter and aperture and shooting mode. what a pleasure to shoot like this, real photographers and enthusiasts have made fuji the popular brand that it is. However they are abandoning them to the iPhone user. I get it, but there should be both available.
Totally agree. I'm still loving my XT-20 and as Fuji seem unlikely to give us the following upgrades in the same size of camera - larger EVF, slightly larger hand grip, give it weather sealing, (keep the D-pad), then i'll just keep using this lovely camera.
Thanks Omar! Same feel up here in Canada with an X-E2 (old but gold). We have long winters here and have to wear gloves. So I NEED/LOVE my buttons! It might be a way for Fuji to push Prosumm. or Pros towards X-pro and X-100 series. Great content and true to yourself as usual!
I've been using XT3 for not so long and I´m already using dials and buttons to change my settings without looking: it´s awesome simple and it´s one of the points where fuji rocks
I've been eyeing an upgrade to my xt30 for some time now, but nothing has really convinced me yet. I really don't want to lose the AF switch, but i also really do want a flip screen!
Hey! Wait for xt40. If something is not 100% convincing, just wait a little bit longer. No matter what you will have in the future, I believe that it will be the right choice for you, Jean.
I've never owned a Fuji camera but I am thinking of taking the plunge. Would you recommend the xt20 as an introduction to Fuji in 2021?. Love your video's ❤️
I would also recommend the xe3. I also have the xt20 but think the ergonomics of the xe3 is better. I find the xt20 a bit too cramped and was always hitting buttons inadvertently. The xt20 also needs an additional grip, the xe3 is fine without. The only things missing from the xe3 are the d pad and the drive selector knob which so far I don’t mind not having. The 20 is still a great camera but for me the xe3 has the edge.
@@marydy4626 ah yes forgot about the lack of flip screen on the xe3. Flip screen is good although it can interfere with the eye sensor in the evf ( sensor sees your finger touching screen, thinks it’s your eye, switches off screen - a bit annoying but you get used to it and make allowances ). Go with the xt20, but you might want to get a grip as well, depending how it feels in your hand - you can get them cheap
I have the X-3 and apart from not having a tilting screen, I love that camera. Very functional, can be used as a street camera with small lenses or landscape with the 10-24 with an l bracket. Anything bigger, you might as well buy the GFX 100S.
Thanks..... Love your content and subscribed on the first day of watching your videos, I get so much to learn from your different types of videos. Please keep up the good work. I want to witness your channel grow towards with millions of subs..... As a normal person like me not a professional photographers they wants to know more about " WHICH IS BETTER DSLR OR MIRRORLESS" still confused and unclear from the great explanations...... Regarding aperture, shutter and iso If I am qualified to set the camera to get what I want I think still DSLR is the best..... Wish you all the best..... Thanks and regards, Lathif.
Yes, an aperture changer makes perfect sense! I was keen to get the XE4 when rumoured and I do have it on pre-order too. However, but the removal of the MCS switch, the rear dial and the front and back grips now has me on the fence. I often use a light XC 16-50 when just out with the family and for walks and I use aperture priority, so I shall see how easy it is to change aperture with the front dial when it also serves SS, ISO and EC. I shall read the manual (when available) and go and have a play when in the shop and then decide. I am not sure I gain much over my XE3 in IQ so these backward ergonomic steps may mean the cost of change is too much. Great review, thank you.
without this video, I had finalized to get X-E4 instead of T-30. But now will go for simple (still not complex with T-30) + functional features which got removed in XE-4. Looks wise X-E4 is the bet and the separate to buy grip is also well designed. I hope can get that grip for T-30. between these two cameras, do you think you would have gone for T-30 if you did not had T-20?
I saw many other videos like of bigheadtaco, of conversation with Rinzi Ruiz and now I think this is the one to go for. I will not go for X-T30 or T3 but XE-4. If you see what this camera is for, and the things gone really don't matter, you may reconsider your decision.
Word. Soon as I saw they'd removed the focus mode switch I decided to keep my X-E2s. Also " ... too consumerish as opposed to prosumerish..." 100% spot on.
Thanks for the insight. Nice updated sensor, great tilt screen, and very cool look indeed... as long as you stick with the 27mm! Elsewhere it's a big backward step in term of ergonomics and functionality : sometimes, "less may just be less" . The difference in dimensions with the X-E3 is minute : you will forget it as soon as you harness it with another glass together with the grip and a thumbrest - which I personally don't find notably aesthetic compared with, let's say, the X100V (which exudes elegance). It seems that the optional thumbrest even makes the buttons more awkward to access.... I would have much preferred a design inspired from the compactness of the X-E3: some grip, a few physical controls, dedicated video and focus switches ... I don't crave for a second dial, but I would have kept it at the back. I was eager to upgrade from my X-E2 to the X-E4 as a primary camera, and I am not into the T-factor neither.... so guess I am stuck here for some more years to come :-(
" Elsewhere it's a big backward step in term of ergonomics and functionality" Ergonomics are subjective, you don't like them, others will. Functionality is MUCH better on the X-E4, there are significant firmware improvements. The AF has been greatly improved too.
I agree with your logic Omar. I've had an X-T3 for two years and love it. I want a smaller body as a 2nd camera to use for street photography and casual shooting. I didn't want the X-E3 because of the fixed LCD, but late in it's cycle I tried to buy one when the body only was selling for $499. I never got it because none were left at that point. The X-E4 adressed the one compromise I had with the X-E3 but their are several compromises with the lack of X-E4 controls. Also, they kept the joystick but moved it down on the back panel--not as easy to land your finger on it.
first of all..i love your vids... learned a lot from you, especially since i decided to jump to fuji xt30 from my canon60d (which is heavy and when i reach to the point where i know i should take pics or vids i just didn;'t -.-' ) 2 questions: 1. why fuji? (of all...) and why do i feel like you have to ' get em all' xD ? 2. please make a vid about why those button somehow make sense when you own it (i'm still gettin use to it from canon) 3. 2 is not a question anyways... sooo, is FUJI a good decision? i did shoot(& learn) to make money with my 60d..but lots and lots of pro uses sony cameras... am i making a wrong decision ( well i hate sony menus though, but even fuji is not easy to get use to)
Ha these are all the exact reason I still shoot my XT20. I love this smaller form factor and am always tempted by the latest and greatest (xt30, XS10, XE4) but no d-pad or psam and now no focus mode selector has always stopped me. I edit aaaall my photos in-camera. I am lightning at it on the d-pad. So cutting out the d-pad just isn't an option for me. Depressingly I know they are neeeever gonna bring it back and the XT3 ,4, 5s are too big and honestly a little overkill for me. I have no idea what I'll do when my XT20 ever kicks the bucket...
I get the sense that a lot of shooters have never shot a camera that TRULY gets out of their way so they can focus on creating. Most of what I've seen said about the XE4 is like getting ANY new camera --> the "new camera blues". I also think that "you get used to it", and then it's your new normal. Then shortly after that you wonder how you ever survived your entire life w/out having an XE4. :) I take my GRii out a lot for the simple reason that it's less "in my way" than my A7iii and A6500. My prediction is... history will rate the XE4 much higher than it's being rated today. (someone screenshot that so they can call me out later). LOL I think another issue is people "thinking" the that XE4 is the "new XE3" and that's totally gonna lead to disappointment. But I think Fuji's is the blame for this because of the naming convention used. :) IG: freshouttafocus
I'm a Sony shooter myself and have been considering the GRiii and X-E4. I like having something simplistic as an option. I think you're right about it eventually growing on people. Just because you can cram a million buttons and settings on a camera doesn't mean you need them all to shoot. The X-E4 allows easy adjustment to shutter speed, aperture (if you have a lens that has the ring), ISO, and AF points- what else do you really need?
Yep, you are so right. Reliance on swipy touchiness and removal of buttons...what next fully-articulating screen only?! I debated this camera myself to and like you I realized it had gone to far away from what I liked about my X-T3 and my X-100V. I do want to have a backup interchangeable lens body, so maybe I'll just find an cheaper used X-H1, X-T2 or X-Pro2 maybe in graphite even. :D
I’m on the same page as you in regards to those comments . The only thing I would add; as if anybody would do it : would they ; and that is move the view finder to the left from the right , as I am somebody who uses his left eye to focus . You get left handed golf clubs, so why not view finders she asks lol . Great video Omar - thanks again for your thoughtful opinions .
Finally someone talking with sense ! Completely agree.
Totally agree with you. I feel like fuji is shaking things up
Fully agree, same way I view the xe line.
X-e4 …. Fujifilm just dumbing down everything.
I just recently got an xe4 and I love it. It’s going to be so easy to travel with and I love the minimalism personally
Most photography RUclipsrs: *buys gear for content*
Omar: *makes content on not buying gear*
The XE5 I believe, will have no physical controls but have a slot for a sim card and have phone software included.
@@nigelward5189 That's just cruel! Because I'm selfish I hope the xe4 doesn't do well and they reverse course for the xe5. Hopefully it does well enough that they don't just discontinue the xe line but not well enough that they're rewarded for (in my opinion) bad behavior.
@@beepboopbeepboop190 I'll drink to that but I think it is unlikely.
I agree with everything that you've said but I also adapted incredibly quickly to the X-E4, and it becomes just as easy to operate once you re-learn the language. I'm a big fan of the minimal look and feel.
Really? Omar just talked me out of the XE4 on the focus switch issue. How do you change focus modes - did you set a custom button?
@@WesKriesel you can use dial on front for ss and iso use the top function button to change focus modes so look at it as moving switch from front to top. Simple.
@@WesKriesel You could totally do that I just so rarely ever change it - and it takes 2s in the custom menu for the rare times I do (like switching to an old manual lens)
I hear you Patrick...but by buying it, I'd be supporting the removal of future switches lol...What's next? None on the XT5?????? ;)
We need complex cameras for your awesome tutorials!! lol
Switching Touch off is one of the first things I do on any Fujica. Less trouble, less missed pictures. It's not a smartphone after all.
I think this is a generational thing as well though, while I agree with you and Omar, I feel my friends would rather everything be through a much more optimized screen like a smartphone almost.
TOTALLY agree that these little guys are being “dumbed down” a bit. Not a direction for me. Thanks Omar for continuing to inspire us!
I agree. Still enjoy using my tank-like XH-1. The only thing I hate is the placement of that Q-button. Lol.
I am still feeling sad over the disappearance of the d-pad...
Not improving the evf after 8 years is just inexcusable for me.
Theys want you into a higher end model, i.e. xpro3 if you want a better evf...
Agreed. It is worth $300 to me, so it will be a while before getting one, as it is basically an XM1 with modern internals. 💩💩💩
@@InertiaEffect the XE2 had a good bigger EVF. The XE line went from mid range to budget. 💩
I couldn’t agree with you more. I just picked up a used X-E2S and I’m loving all the dials and buttons. What I’d like is an X-E2 body with a flip screen and the latest sensor and software. It would be the ideal camera for me.
I also own X-E2s and X-E3 but find the X-E2s is a nicer looking camera than X-E3.
Love both the same though. Wouldn’t trade either one for the X-E4.
"They're doing a Canon." (tear rolls down my cheek)
Isn't Fuji doing an Apple? Not long ago there was a vast choice in interchangeable MacBooks that became much of a muchness.
At least 20% of fuji’s xt-20 purchases were inspired from you. Omar youre the man
True 😂
I second this!!!! I bought my X-T20 watching your videos, I wanted to switch from my Nikon D3000 to something else... I love my Fuji and learning every day more with your Videos!
So true, but I buy xt30 it's fit my hand, absolutely love it
and most of non-purchases of X-E4 will also be inspired from him. Nevertheless not a loss for fuji as like me one will go for other options. Like I go for T-30 now after seeing this video
And its still going up, because of him
I wonder how many people you inspired to get the x-t 20. A lot I would imagine. I am one of them and enjoying it so much. This video made me feel once again that I had chosen well.
Me too, I was one of Omar's X-T20 club as well!
I was one of them. I LOVE mine. Cheaper than the X-T30 without many noticeable drawbacks, and more fun than the X-E3.
Me too...
Include me on the list. All the more that I can hold on to my XT-20 :D
The X-T20 is a great camera. However, I wanted the eye AF, so I chose the X-T30. Even with all of its quirks, I love the X-T30 as well.
If you think of it as a minimalistic film camera, X-E4 makes a lot of sense and it looks pretty too :)
Exactly. It's like photographers have never shot something that's out of their way so they can focus on creating. A lot of what's said here is like getting ANY new camera "you get used to it" and then it's your new normal.
I totally agree with this.
People have been asking Fuji to simplify, like Leica, so that they can focus on shooting.
I certainly agree , Fujifilm is like a Leica inspired camera from Japan. so I Think there is nothing wrong with those dials that has been removed.
Removing the d-pad on the X100V was a big mistake. The X-E4 just takes those type of mistakes, and dials it up to 11. Total bummer.
As someone who’s shot with the x100f and has now owned the x100v for about a year now... I don’t miss the d pad what so ever. I enjoy having all that space for my thumb without worrying about hitting a button on accident. Using the joy stick for everything is super easy and simple.
There was no D-Pad on the X-E3.
Lastly it doesn't have that ugly, flimsy and annoying flip out screen.
me too!
Your reviews are so good. You are a combination of practical, insightful and hysterical.
I like that they are making cameras that are different from each other with different features. Not everyone wants the same features on a camera.
I bought the xpro3 and haven’t had any interest in other cameras.
Weather sealed, dual sd card, and excellent picture output, what else do I want more.
Oh the successor to x70 / xf10!
If Fuji hadn't crippled the video I'd have happily bought the X-Pro3 over the X-T4.
I bought an X-70 last summer, idk if it's out of its depth yet. To me, it doesn't feel like it's lagging behind in any way that it needs a successor.
@@-grey though i can do it with a workaround, a snap focus would be perfect.
So happy that I'm not the only one...
Had so much hope for this body. Now, I hope my X-E3 lasts longer.
The only Fuji camera that tempts me even though I don’t need it is the 100V.
I love my x100v!
Same here
Can't know if it is the right type camera for you but when it is you'll love it. Had the X100F, now have the X100V, had a lot of differentcameras in the past and the X100V is a keeper. Love mine.
X100V is “the one”.. and if lens choice tempts you, just pick up a cheap XE2 body (£150) which is still more functional than an XE4 😳
Xt20 was my first camera, but i sold it to get an XT2. Little bit regretted,. And last week i bought xt20 again, and couldn't be happier..
Been subscribed for a while now Omar and today I realise why. You just jump right in. No padding and you make the point you want to make. Yay brevity.
X-S10 weather sealed would be real killer.
That is a good camera for those who like central EVFs. Wish the XE line had followed suit.
To add to that, I think removing so many buttons can kind of ruin the look of a camera... Like the leica camera's: they look great, but they also kind of lack personality for me? I actually personally prefer having all the buttons with all the little markings on them.
Really strange that they removed focus switch, I think it gives very good and kinda old look.
X-E4 was on my list too...no more!
The real bummer is the XT4 flip screen
I totally agree, and I'm afraid fuji is losing its "analog identity"
Would you say the same of Leica? Look at how few controls are on the Q2/M10 and compare the X-E4 to it. Fuji know what they are doing I reckon.
@@fredbloggs545 Fuji is looking for a more comprehensive and less technical market with this model, simplicity and frindly user at its maximum. My fear is if they extend this policy to x-t range.

Fuji have always styled their RF cameras on Leica, hence the comparison.
Photography and comedy in the same place. My two passions. Thank you. Always informative. Always amusing.
Mann I love my x-t20!
Fully customized with extra grip, thump grip and red shutter button :)
TLDR; people don't like a minimalist camera that's minimalist. I sold my X-T3 for the X-E4 and I see myself getting out more because of the small size and simplicity.
But, but, the X-E4 doesn't have a MCS switch, how on Earth are you going to cope, the sky is falling in!
@@fredbloggs545 oh no, time to throw it in the trash then I guess! Are they really expecting me to press an additional button?!?!? MANIACS!
@@Hightower2804TP
How are you getting on with the X-E4?
If you want some actual good thoughts on this camera, check out Mattias Burling and his mini-review :)

....and I will stop pressing the Q button by accident, having it on the X-E3 grip was a PITA!
Thanks to Omar I’m so xt20 l bought another new one for when my 1st one dies !
me too!!!
Top advice as always, just gotta love Omar.
I've had mt X-E4 for a couple of months now. For every reason you say no I say YES! I have stopped using my X-Pro2. Boo buttons and dials.
I'm in the same boat. The X-E4 really offers nothing over my X-T30. (Except for the flip screen, which I don't use because I don't vlog.)
Actually, it does: Two more film simulations as well as „Clarity“ and „Color Chrome Blue“!
Great thoughts man! Been thinking of adding a camera to my XT30. I’m choosing between the XS10 and XE4, but I see that the XE4 had too many controls removed. I love the rangefinder form and flip up screen but too much were taken for “simplicity”
i also like the look of the xe4 once the price drops ill get one for shure! I think its the best looking fuji ever
I agree, infact this started from the transition between the XE2S to the XE3 itself.
What do you suggest : Xt30 or Xe4 ? I don’t have any Fuji. I like the look of the xe4. I want to use it as an everyday camera... Thanks !
I started taking my XT2 with me on trips abroad 6 years ago - love it and I take it everywhere.
I agree with everything. I was so excited when this was announced and then step by step became disappointed with the compromises. Not for me. 🙂
but the xt2/20 does not have new film simulations... for casual/hobbyist shooter like me who dont like using PS/LR in post, latest xe4 or x100v is better with more simulations to play with
Not only that, but the X-E4 has the ability to save WB shifts to each custom settings slot and brings things like Clarity setting and finer control over grain (as well as better AF of course).
@@fredbloggs545 agree 100% with you... not sure why internet ignores these things
For this video alone I now respect you a lot Omar, you're one of the few people on the camera review world with a large audience that is capable of being really critical when reviewing a new piece of equipment and saying "hey this is great, yes, but they have taken away so many things that it is no longer something that I need or would use over this 4 year old camera"
Many youtubers out there would simply say something like "some things have been taken away, BUT LOOK AT ALL THIS THAT HAVE BEEN PUT IN ON IT, and if you want some of those extra options you can easily pay for these extra accessories with a premium price"
Omar 🖐😄 first time for me and
first time using fuji system I am about to get xt4 with 16 80 kit and 35 mm, f2 with 23mm f2 all I do is 3 things
1-street photography
2- product photography
3- filmography (short films)
Am I On the right track
I agree with you, I was hoping for the XE range to continue and got excitied over the announcement of the XE4. However I am very dissapointed with it's ergonomics and seriously thinking of rebuying an XT20, (which I had and sold last year), they are an excellent value now at just 349 UK pounds.
I own two. My Noir and regular XT20 I bought for $400 US.
I’m torn between the x-E4 and the x-T30 ii, you may have me leaning toward as the T30. Would you consider that a smart move?
I'm torn too...I own a xe3 and LOVE it! Thought on upgrading...but haven't yet... maybe I'll save and go for the xpro3...your are your thoughts? Save to get the xpro3, right?
Good point....photographers don't buy new cameras enough. Enthusiasts do...consumers do.
Im thinking of buying XS10 but im not sure on what lens to go with. I will mostly use it for videos, family outing and portraits. Could you kindly tell which lens to go with ? The options i have or thought of.
Xc 15-45 kit lens
Xf18-55
XF16-80
Or body only and cheaper XC35mm prime lens ?
Please kindly give your advice
completely agree, I recently picked up my XE-2 and realized there was a custom button for everything. 10 customizable buttons, plus a built in flash, Q button, replay, rear dial for instant punch in plus all the usual manual dials like exposure comp, shutter and aperture and shooting mode. what a pleasure to shoot like this, real photographers and enthusiasts have made fuji the popular brand that it is. However they are abandoning them to the iPhone user. I get it, but there should be both available.
The X-E4 is not at the price point where it can be stuffed full of buttons, dials etc. It would be an X-Pro price.
Yep, I agree. My xt2 is great for all those reasons.
Totally agree.
I'm still loving my XT-20 and as Fuji seem unlikely to give us the following upgrades in the same size of camera - larger EVF, slightly larger hand grip, give it weather sealing, (keep the D-pad), then i'll just keep using this lovely camera.
When my friend was looking for a camera rec from me, I told her Xt20. She loved it. I used to love it as well. Now just the XT2 for me.
X-E4 is going to sell like hot cakes! I’m thrilled with the design choices and feel that less really is more.
It is an awesome camera.
Agree completely. I feel the same about the X-S10. Prefer to have all the dials and function buttons. Full control, no need to search for a menu item.
So agree Next models will have no buttons or dials and LCD
Hate what Fuji is doing now
The day Omar decides to stop showing off his xt20 is when I will even consider selling my xt20. Thanks for the continuous reassurance!
I've never owned a Fuji camera but I am thinking of taking the plunge. Would you recommend the xt20 as an introduction to Fuji in 2021?. Love your video's ❤️
100%. The XT20 is a good camera and can be had for cheap. You can find a kit lens bundle for $600 or so on ebay.
@@rascott1970 thanks Bob, the xe3 was on my list but I don't like the range finder type viewfinder and I wanted a flip screen.
Thanks and regards,
Lathif.
I love your loyalty to the Xt20! I still have one and it is still awesome!
without this video, I had finalized to get X-E4 instead of T-30.
I was eager to upgrade from my X-E2 to the X-E4 as a primary camera, and I am not into the T-factor neither.... so guess I am stuck here for some more years to come :-(
" Elsewhere it's a big backward step in term of ergonomics and functionality"
Ergonomics are subjective, you don't like them, others will.
Good day! What camera do you shoot your blog with? very cool quality.
first of all..i love your vids...
learned a lot from you, especially since i decided to jump to fuji xt30 from my canon60d (which is heavy and when i reach to the point where i know i should take pics or vids i just didn;'t -.-' )
2 questions:
1. why fuji? (of all...) and why do i feel like you have to ' get em all' xD ?
2. please make a vid about why those button somehow make sense when you own it (i'm still gettin use to it from canon)
3. 2 is not a question anyways... sooo, is FUJI a good decision? i did shoot(& learn) to make money with my 60d..but lots and lots of pro uses sony cameras... am i making a wrong decision ( well i hate sony menus though, but even fuji is not easy to get use to)
Ha these are all the exact reason I still shoot my XT20.
LOL
I think another issue is people "thinking" the that XE4 is the "new XE3" and that's totally gonna lead to disappointment. But I think Fuji's is the blame for this because of the naming convention used. :) IG: freshouttafocus
Correct. The same complaints were made when the X-E2 was replaced by the X-E3 and now people are saying the X-E3 is perfect!
