  • In this video I'll demonstrate how to replace a camshaft position sensor on a GM 3.8L series 2 V-6. The vehicle featured in this video is a 2001 Pontiac Bonneville. Please verify in your repair manual if this procedure is the same for the GM 3.8L series 2 V-6 you are working on. There may be a few out there that the removal and replacement procedure may be different. Verify that the procedure shown in the video is the same for your vehicle.
    Do note: If your vehicle has a diagnostic trouble code or codes pertaining to the camshaft position sensor it will be necessary to erase these codes after the repair. The codes can be erased by disconnecting the negative battery cable from the battery for 10 minutes. (Of coarse if you followed the directions given in the video you would have already disconnected the negative battery cable before beginning the replacement procedure and the codes should be erased by the time the sensor is replaced and the negative cable is reconnected.)
    As mentioned in the video, it is recommended to disconnect the negative battery cable before replacing the sensor. **BE SURE YOU HAVE YOUR RADIO CODE BEFORE DISCONNECTING YOUR BATTERY CABLE** (the code should be in your glove compartment in your owners manual or information packet) The radio may not work if this code is not entered into the radio after the battery has been disconnected. Locate the code and be sure you have it before going forward with repairs.
    Of course, you will need to reconnect the negative battery cable end after the sensor is replaced. (I'm sure you would have figured that out) :)
    Also: Its not a bad idea to rotate the engine and verify the trigger or magnet is not missing from the cam sprocket. On some vehicles the trigger or magnet can fall out. You'll need a mirror and a flash light to verify this. Repair as needed. This video does not go into this as it is not the purpose of the video.

    Your videos are the only ones I have seen that are useful and I have watched a bunch. The main problem is a lack of light and yours have great light. Another problem is many people obscure what they are doing with their bodies and they many times skip essential steps. I am sorry for any confusion. I made an edit that clarified my comment. Basically, it can be easy to confuse the Cam Sensor (Camshaft Position Sensor) with the Crankshaft Position Sensor. I was just adding a point to clarify.
      My vehicle is a 1998 Buick Riviera that has the 3800 Series II with a supercharger. Mine has much tighter work spaces.

    • @BarboursAutoHelp
      @BarboursAutoHelp  4 года назад +1

      I'd suspect maybe the ignition module or a coil. Usually a faulty cam sensor will set a code. You could take the module off your vehicle and send it to the parts store for testing. They should heat it up pretty good to see if it fails. I'd call ahead to be sure they have a tester. Maybe that's it. Let me know what you find.

      Bleachanna 2005 Grand prix GTP... I change almost everything. Change spark plugs, wires, oxygen sensor, throttle body, fuel pump, mass airflow.
      The problem I'm having is first start of the day during warm weather, start but it hard to starts like its out of time start. Now the weather cooler now. The car hard to start or dont want to start. Take a while to starts. Still no codes.. During that problem I check the firing and fuel pressure and all good.I dont know if the spark is firing when its post too. I dont have anything to to test if injectors have power. Change the relay to the injector. Only thing that I havent change is crank sensor and cam. When the car start (during the hard starts) its sputters when you leave the motor at same RPM and kills fuel MPG bad.

    Hey how long does this job take approximately? Can you still do job without removing the coolant resovoir. I do understand for more room if i have to fine. It should be similar to my 1998 buick lesabre hopefully.

      I see your knowledgeable about the sabre. Mine is turning over but not starting. It died when I pulled in to park and hasn't started since. Changing the cam sensor now. Than fuel filter.

    I have a 3.8 liter Oldsmobile 88it's stalling while I'm driving down the road and won't start after running for awhile and I'm coming to find that it's the camshaft or the crankshaft position sensor how far from the camshaft sensor is the crankshaft sensor
