Your whole approach and methods are about as top notch as anyone could expect from an instructional video. The details you point out make all the difference between you and most other RUclipsrs. Lucky for me I have the same exact engine setup in my '02 LeSabre. You've been a great help to me, and I greatly appreciate all the effort you put into your videos. Be well.
Great information. I have the same problem with my exhaust 02 sensor. I thought that it was my catalysts converter 02 sensor. My engine light came on and read 02 sensor bank 1. I have some basic knowledge about car parts, and repairs. However though, I wasn't knowledgeable on this 02 sensor bank 1. Instead of first asking Auto Zone to let me actually see it. I went ahead and purchased the wrong 02 sensor. I got the one for the catalysts converter (under the car). I paid $ 20 for the part, and $ 65 to have it replaced. Only to realize that my check engine light was still on. After doing some though research I finally realized, and understood what was the correct part. I had purchased the correct. I was scheduled to have an auto repair shop to replace it for $ 45-65. However though, after seeing your video, I believe that I can replace it myself. Just today I did exactly what you said. I removed my engine cover. I looked directly behind the engine. Their it was located. I placed my hand directly on it. Yes it really looks so easy to replace. As you illustrated. All I need to purchase six inch extension, and a sensor remover tool. I already have a ratchet. The only this I am concerned about in making sure I properly unplug the connection from the old 02 sensor. I have a 1999 Buick Park Avenue ultra supercharged engine 3.8. This is the original 02 sensor. Again thanks for your video I hope that I do it right 😊😊
Thank you but watching this video it taught me what not to do that I was going to do in the first place and I thank you very kindly for the advice and the equipment have a great day
Could this be the reason I'm getting a P0420 code? My upstream sensor wire melted against the exhaust manifold . I repaired the wire but the code came back.
Thanks for the informative simple video. I'm having trouble rotating the sensor with my weak arms. I'm using a ratchet so maybe it's the tool. Will try tomorrow
Hi Keith! 2 questions...#1) What connector is connected to the 02 sensor connector? Is it the EGR connector? And #2) I just replaced my 02 sensor on my 98 Park Ave (thanks to your vid), and, for some odd reason, I now have 2 female connectors that I am supposed to connect back together??? How is it even possible to have 2 females? So...the 02 sensor connector is female & the EGR? Or whatever the connector that is that's supposed to connect to it is identical to the 02 connector! I'm so confused. :/ Help please. TYSM in advance! (I wish I could send you a pic of what I have here but there's no attach thingie).
I tried to do this on my 2001 chevy monte carlo ss 3.8 engine it was merely impossible because the transmission stick pole is in.the way how long is your socket wrench
For removing the plastic cover, some of those cars with the Supercharger have a bolt that screws into the top, in the supercharger that'll need to be removed as well
So, you changed out two O2 sensors that were working and you had codes that said that they are working? And are you worried that your new O2 sensors won't work? Why are you worried about them continuing to work? I'm not sure I understand your question.

If my car hesitates when I started up and then after a while it drives normal but then when I shut it off and started up and it hesitates again would this be because of the 02 sensor?
Really good video. I paid an auto shop to replace mine because I didn't have the time and I hadn't researched my check engine code. Makes me wonder why I was charged $342 to replace it after I explained that my code reader said P0135 O2 Sensor Heater Circuit Bank 1 Sensor 1.
Well, just because your code reader gave you a code for the heater circuit it doesn't automatically mean that the O2 sensor is bad. There is more to the circuit than just the sensor. There is a fuse, O2 sensor, wiring and the PCM that all make up the circuit. A failure in any one point along that circuit can cause this code. So, they probably ran a pin point test on it to insure that they were replacing the right part and then of course you have the cost of the part and the labor to put it in. So, $342 may not be a bad price for having a pro diagnose it and replace the part for you.
If yall ever come across that the car want crank sometimes. I replaced crank and cam sensor. And wire harness. $100. FOR ALL parts on ebay. Car run fine.

The sensor can be tough to get out so I personally recommend you use a whole socket on it. The new sensor will go in much easier

Thank for the video. But I just bought a camaro with that motor and I need a catalytic converter. The shop I went to told me to get a catalytic converter with 3, O2 sensors. Is this correct ? Thanks
Hey, I just bought this 99 Camaro with no exhust or catalytic converter. It has the 3800, V-6. And a shop I went to. The guy I know that works there was't there. And his wife that works up front told me that if I bought a cat. online to make sure it came with 3 sensor. Is that because, I will need to replace 3. Or the cat itself has 3 ?
Some shops like to replace the O2 sensors with the cat. The converter shouldn't come with sensors... at least the ones I get don't. You may have to ask for all the sensors when you get the cat.
Thak you very much for your response. I have figured out that two of the O2 sensor are on both side of or behind the headers and the third behind the cat. On this year Camaro.
Better idea - use a 1/2"-drive socket over the top of the sensor socket, and use extension(s) and a 1/2"-drive breaker bar. And never use a pipe over a ratchet wrench handle for additional torque leverage because you'll risk damaging the ratchet.
@@BarboursAutoHelp No, that was my own extra friendly advice, because I happened to ruin a Craftsman 3/8"-drive ratchet wrench last weekend by using a pipe over its handle to leverage the O2 socket. After that mistake I realized AFTER my mistake that the O2 socket has a hex that can accommodate a socket over its end, and a 1/2"-drive is much stronger for torque and the use of a breaker bar basically eliminates the need for a pipe. I learned that a ratchet wrench's internal mechanism can't really withstand the stress of a pipe used with it, and that's what a breaker bar is for. (I also needed to use a universal adapter to solve the angle problem reaching down to the O2 sensor.) I also learned that the type of O2 sensor socket with the extra-wide slot that eliminates 2 of the hex corners (the type that Harbor Freight sells) also doesn't work because it slips and can strip the sensor's hex head. I went to Pep Boys and bought their socket that has the narrow slot and all 6 hex corners, and it worked (after soaking the joint with Liquid Wrench). That sensor can be a beast to break free after years of being subjected to exhaust heat. The point of my post is that my mistake (and loss) and friendly advice can result in another's gain. Probably not. I'd have a hands on tech take a look at it.
What size is the socket? 22mm or something else...
7/8"
What size is shock and can you put an open wrench on it and what size
7/8". I would not suggest using an open end wrench. This could potentially round off the nut of the O2 sensor.
So what is the torque value to tighten it down to?
Don't have it. You will need a repair manual for that info.
