    NTA! Welp, we now know who the golden child of this family is. OP, I'd still give her the $5k, but tell them that's the end of it and you will not put one penny more towards it. Little sis better find a decent paying job that will work around her school hours pretty quickly.

    NTA. And I'd distance myself as much as possible from them now, because once this sh*t-show hits the fan, they're gonna come after OP for help, and they're gonna pester them, nag them, and guilt them into helping. I'd be OUT.

    How did OP get so money smart with such terrible example of parents!!! Good on you OP!! Hopefully sister won't have too traumatic of a first lesson with money and she makes it out of this, but there's no avoiding the pain she's in for regardless. Stand your ground and don't bail her out when she gets in trouble.

    NTA! I would definitely set the 5k aside because once that Jeep is repoed that money you saved for her will be needed to buy the cheaper car your parents should have gotten her.

    NTA. If the Jeep is financed, they will require the sister to have full coverage insurance - that for an 18 year old on at $65k Jeep is going to be astronomical! Also, many states (Missouri included) base the registration fee on the cost of the vehicle - that is going to be a fun bill to pay. Hell, OP's original 5k is going to be gone in a month with one payment on vehicle, one month of insurance and basic registration. This is on the parents for not holding to the agreement. They co-signed, they can start selling things off to pay for it. Or maybe - just maybe - tell sis that the world is not all rainbows and skittles and the Jeep goes back. They can eat the cost of what's been done so far and devaluation, and let sis take the bus or get an E-bike.

    You made a deal, she broke the deal. Keep your money it will just be flushed down the toilet when the car is repossessed.

    NTA!!! The Golden Child doesn't get to get things at your expense. Still give her the 5K but in a bond so she has to wait 5 years and hopefully with some distance from her parents and life experience on her own she will not blow it when she gets it.

    This is so irresponsible. If the car gets taken away for repayment that will screw her credit for the next 7 years. So she will get out of college and have a hard time renting an apartment or ever buying another car/property until that ding to her credit score falls off. Its better to be the hard ass now then let her live her pretty fantasy that will screw her over. She may be angry now but her future self will be grateful. Also, assuming OP is from the states. Some states your yearly tabs are based on the value of the car and can get sooooo expensive. My mom once bought a Suburban or something and her tabs were over $1000.

    $25-35k for a car is hella nice. The help OP is offering is my budget for a car of my own. The difference between me and OP’s sister, however, is that I have a well-paying job.

  • @LLynneM

    So OP’s not the “reason she lost the car,” + so someone in that family keeps their word, I’d maybe gv them the $5k, the warning (don’t come to me when she crashes it, when ur underinsured, when she can’t afford to fix it, when ur credit + hers is ruined, when she needs another co-signer becuz she has no car _for schoooool_ ), the lecture (u LIED to me, don’t ask me for anything else for ur Golden Child), and wash ya hands of their mess.

    The only time I've ever heard of financing a down payment was when a friend of mine bought a house 20 years ago before the housing crisis when things like that could slip under the radar. NTA. Parents are obviously bad at financial decisions, and since they cosigned and there's no written agreement between OP and anyone else, and since they broke the verbal agreement by going over budget, they're stuck with the bed they made for themselves. It sucks, I know, but when you play stupid games, you win stupid prizes.

    NTA, you told them how much you were willing to fork over to help pay for the sister's car, they went WAY over that limit. If the parents want to spoil her that much, they can figure out how to pay for it themselves.

    Whether or not you back out on the original deal she is going to experience a repo. Do you want to put strain on your relationship with your sister over this? It might be best to keep your side of the deal and offer up the 5,000. No more than that, no bailing out and let this be a learning moment for her.

      If op lets them waste the 5k on that jeep the dumbass parents will try and con more out of her. They are doing this because they believe they won't need to deal with the fallout

    • @tatyanicktheone7387
      @tatyanicktheone7387 5 месяцев назад +5

      This car will soon be back to the dealer since the family won't be able to pay. So the 5k will just be wasted? No. The OP should stay away of the whole shit show

    • @LLynneM
      @LLynneM 5 месяцев назад

      @@tatyanicktheone7387but then they can blame OP for her losing the car. I wouldn’t give them that out. And someone in that family should keep their word. But easy for me to say, it’s not my $5k.

    • @Kage5944
      @Kage5944 5 месяцев назад

      Totally get both points on loosing the 5k and parents also trying to con more money and pointing fingers at op. However the parents will use the repossession as ops fault for not sticking to the deal and giving the 5k. By keeping to the deal op can firmly state they kept to their word and can contribute no more than that. It will leave no room for them to blame op, otherwise I fear parents will manipulate sister and their relationship will be ruined. Instead allowing the repo and walking her through fixing her finances so she never goes through this again would strengthen the bond and in the long run help the sister to manage her funds preparing for life

    I would never want to drive an expensive brand new vehicle to a college/university and leave it unattended in a parking lot. It's value will drop quickly.

      Oh yeah. I go to a private Christian university so there are some kids with nice cars (there’s like 2 Mustangs and a bunch of Teslas) but the majority of students drive cars that can’t be worth much more than $15-20k. Most of us are bad at parking as well 💀

    Learning to sword fight you start with a stick? Hell my daughter started with a stick for her first car. She saved up, researched and when she discovered manuals were cheaper than automatics taught herself to drive a standard. Then she started figuring out how to fix some of the simpler things. A huge advantage to buying used.
    Oh, and it's not a Jeep so she can afford the parts.

  • @icygubler

    NTA. He'd be justified to back out. Yes, he made a deal to give her the $$, but on her end, the condition was that she choose a used car in a certain price range. She broke her end of the deal, and even if that's her parents' fault, she can't expect OP to hold up his end when she broke hers.
