- The Hours chronicles a day in the life of three very different individuals, all of whom share the feeling that they have been living their lives for someone else. Virginia Woolf (Nicole Kidman) lives in a suburb of London in the 1920s as she struggles to begin writing her first great novel, Mrs. Dalloway, while also attempting to overcome the mental illness that threatens to engulf her. Laura Brown (Julianne Moore), a young wife and mother in post-World War II Los Angeles, is reading Mrs. Dalloway, and is so deeply affected by it that she begins to question the life she has chosen for herself. Finally, Clarissa Vaughan (Meryl Streep) is a modern-day Mrs. Dalloway in contemporary New York, planning a party for her friend and former lover who is slowly losing his fight with AIDS. I know this is a very beloved movie, but the dramatic egg crack at 1:07 will never not make me cackle.
Right? I would not show this trailer to anyone I wanted to see this movie.
I love the movie, Virginia Woolf was an idol to me and I never thought to be inspired by her this much through this film. Nicole Kidman is exceptional, she's unrecognizable, she shined brightly in this film as well as Julianne Moore, Meryl, what can I say, but Nicole Kidman deserves her Academy for this, with or without Harvey Weinstein and Miramax. The score is also superb to the point that I made it my background music when I'm writing lol
Where could I find this movie
If you actually knew anything about Woolf, even a bit, you'd actually be quite disappointed by how this movie portrayed her. Please don't call her your idol.

Just a fictional tale of what remained at that moment of Virginia, her state of mind. The acting of nicole is someone who is deciding to take an awful decision to take and knows is hurting people but she knows that possibly is the only freedom she could've
the trailer doesn't do it justice highlighting those moments like that

For me, it's more the story of a great book than the one who wrote it. Around the book: the writer, the reader, the character (transposed to explain the universality of a masterpiece). It has nothing to do with a biopic...
Just here because of Vita and Virginia, it was amazing and I want more of Virginia Woolf and people that surrounding her.
But Virginia Woolf was not like that, a hapless ditherer. She was a woman of incisive mind.

I feel like the role of Vita is always given to the wrong actor. Vita was elegant and attractive in her own way, but she was not classically pretty. She had a masculinity and dominance to her. It's a disservice to women that lead and supporting female roles are almost always cast by classically pretty actresses when in reality half of women do not have petite little faces with cute little noses. It's not just about appearances for me but people sort of carry an energy in their bodies. A good actor can perform energy to a certain extent but still, there's only so much a person can do. There isn't video of Vita, but you can just tell from photos that her energy is being missed in these Hollywood portrayals. Along those lines, Meryl Streep would have been way better for the role of Woolf than Kidman. The voice, the looks, the age, and Streep has this felicity about her that would have matched Woolf's bohemian nature. Kidman does reserved and thoughtful very well, but if you do some digging, Woolf may have been a bit reserved in groups, but she was actually quite talkative and cheerful most of the time. I'm not saying she wasn't ever depressed, but she didn't kill herself because she was sad per se, she killed herself because she was exhausted and embarrassed by her manic episodes.
