For a cotton paper that's not quite as expensive but works really well, I like Meeden/Baohong Academy. It feels like painting on Arches, tbh. And printer ink lines don't bleed on it either.

Yeah, Baohong is a lot better than Canson XL especially if they're learning. Paper is a huge factor for me when I was learning. I wouldn't have enjoyed watercolor if my paper couldn't handle a few layers and would buckle and literally tear apart after only a few washes.

Shinhan PWC watercolors are my workhorse and how I learned to improve quickly. Daniel Smith is my top favorite, but Mijello and Shinhan are my second favorites, because they are so affordable in a set.

Hullo Becca and fellow enthusiasts! I have used a lot of different papers just get 100% cotton and shop around! Store brands are sweet just get cotton! Cheap Joe’s has Kilimanjaro papers in blocks, workbooks even sheets! I am also a DaVinci watercolor fan and I LOVE the Aqua Elite brushes from Princeton or the Mimik brand of watercolor brushes. I am in agreement with Becca that you are going to have to try a small sample of any supply before you empty your wallet on any supply! Everyone is different and you are going to get what you enjoy most! I did share this video but I honestly don’t believe that I know how to tag on RUclips! Sweet video Becca, thanks!

I wish I'd known about DaVinci watercolors from the beginning. I would've never had to buy another brand (including the big brands like Daniel Smith and W&N) and their tubes are more affordable and ships very fast. I also wish I'd known more about color mixing and how to make mixing charts because I don't use half the colors I have since I usually end up using the same 6-12 colors and mixing from those.

Making a kit for a watercolor newbie is literally one of my favorite things! So much fun.
I usually include a couple things which For Reasons Unknown were ordered in bulk - water pipettes, 10mL spray bottle, white Crayola crayon. 😂
And if it's someone who you know struggles with always packing the kitchen sink - a Gameboy Advanced bag off eBay is often like $5 and hold an A5 sketchbook and small amount of supplies. Chefs kiss! Perfect for starter kits heheh

@@msl9927 It makes me so darned mad when these RUclipsrs throw facts out there and don't finish an explanation, then ignore our questions. I'm finding my old pads of Arches are doing fine along with about a thousand dollars worth of watercolor and acrylic paints. What we all need to do is stop buying supplies that RUclipsrs talk about! I'm going to make that my new year's resolution.

Loved hearing your perspective and especially loved seeing what a real art store is all about. I can only look at these places online or via their catalogs (or in my dreams). Unfortunately, we don’t have anything like the store you showed in this video in Hawaii. 😢
But I found it a bit difficult to listen to your video because you speak so quickly. I can imagine (from my days as a college lecturer) how difficult it is to speak in front of an audience - and you have a huge audience. Just remember that we all want to learn from you, or be inspired by you, or bask in glory your watercolor collection!

I loved the chaotic energy she spoke with and to me it came across as her being really passionate about her art and being excited to share.
But I'm figuring out I might be autistic so I get having a special interest and I might be ADD but not hyper so much. I have a hard time focusing and I get distracted easily. But I can hyper focus on something I'm interested in and excited about to the point I don't notice the passage of time and all of a sudden it's dark outside or I realize I forgot to eat.
Anyway I subscribed even though it's my first time here and saved this video to several of my playlists.
Did you know you can slow down the video? Or speed it up?
Look for the little gear icon. You can speed it up twice as fast as it is at normal speed, something I need to do listening to the governor of my state he talks so slow.
Or you can slow it down to a quarter speed of normal I think. I find slowing down and even pausing a video super helpful especially when following a tutorial. I hope that helps.

40:04 - 41:47 : Yeah, I agree. You should be done teaching adults.

    • @recoveringsoul755
      @recoveringsoul755 11 месяцев назад +1

I love asking questions so it's sad that some adults won't. I did substitute teaching a couple of computer classes once. I taught and spoke, then as the adults were working on stuff in class, I went around and checked in with each student. I asked if they had any questions or were they struggling with anything. If I didn't know the answer we'd figure it out together. My attitude was that these ARE adults and they PAID to take the class. So that means they WANT to learn. It's not public school or kids being lazy. There are no stupid questions, that's how we learn.
The funny thing is, I worked in the computer industry and had studied computer science, but had not gotten my degree. My coworker who was doing this as a side job to our jobs in tech support had a degree -- in Art!!!
As I was leaving one day the Dean of the adult school flagged me down to talk to me. Apparently a number of students had made comments about me to her. Am I in trouble? Nope. The students really liked me, more than their regular teacher. But they couldn't hire me because they were an accredited school and you had to have a degree to work there. A degree in anything apparently.
I would think someone with experience and training on the subject being taught, plus the ability to teach would be more important than a degree. I guess I'm wrong.
Maybe some adults are afraid to ask questions in front of other adults because they were traumatized somewhere along the line as children or in the workplace. Maybe they were told that they were stupid, or they believe asking a question is a sign of weakness. If you start out being approachable and tell them there are no stupid questions, it should help alleviate the problem.

@@recoveringsoul755 Let me explain my comment above: I think Becca should be done teaching adults, because adults deserve better than a teacher who blames adults for the teacher's lack of skill. Her complaint about adult students upset me too much to type more that the vague comment I gave her. I won't watch any of her videos anymore. There are plenty of watercolor RUclipsrs who love their adult audiences and treat them with respect.
I'm sorry you couldn't get hired to teach at that school (if you were wanting to get hired). I think it should be based on merit, not a piece of paper. I also completely agree with your last paragraph. There are so many reasons an adult may not speak up/ask questions in a class. All valid.
