To understand why ethnic Chinese are successful in whichever country they emigrate, we need to understand what’s the inherent fundamental made up of a Chinese. Generally Chinese are brought up to be upright, hardworking, adaptable, resilient, long-suffering, value education, filial, grateful, loyalty to family & country, understanding the value of money and pros / cons of power & authority. Also Chinese have a deep understanding of what power & corruption encompass in the old Chinese saying “钱能使鬼推磨” (literally “Money can move demons to push the grindstone “). Through the 5,000 years of Chinese civilization, corruption and its oppression is a common place, its history has plenty of examples of how corruption entangle govt officials and how some clever businessmen took advantage of the a corrupt system. Chinese are survivors as they are deeply rooted in the saying ”留得青山在 不怕没柴烧” (”Keep the forest green and you will not lack in firewood”)

One of the reasons why most of Indonesia’s conglomerates is Chinese descent is because of Orde Lama 1960 policy. The Soekarno govt didn’t recognize Chinese descent as Indonesian, depriving them from education facilities. This pushed many of Chinese descent to go to Singapore and pursue education in NUS and NTU, top universities in the world. They became very educated compared to most Indonesians. They are the ones who become founder of Salim, Djarum, Sinarmas, etc. So, the govt policy intended to crush Chinese descent eventually backfired, creating more inequality. Yes, because the Chinese ethnic who were born here were involved in colonial wars, they were taking side with the natives to fight the colonizers while also helping to build the foundation of Indonesia in, so it's not surprising if many Chinese indonesians love Indonesia because they are part of it
The Chinese people living in other countries became very rich due to one simple reason, they were very poor when they arrived in that country. And they tried very hard to find a way out of that situation.
In a nutshell it is very simple, growing up as a "Chindo" there weren't many distractions (religious commitments, aspirations to work for the government etc). Everyone around us were diligent and resilient, we were always taught the importance of having enough money to ensure a good life for the family. I would never say there is a difference in intelligence, we just don't have other commitments that would otherwise derail us from achieving our goals. I can say the same about fellow descendants of other migrant groups (Indians, Arabs etc) on average they are also economically well off. Despite the Chindo label, I see myself as Indonesian through and through.
I am a Chinese Indonesian, 8th generation to be precise. My ancestor came to Indonesia by boat with just clothes, because of famine in China mainland. It has been more than 200 years since, but the story will be passed down forever, so we don't forget our roots on how a brave man travelled to a new land for a new opportunity. It's also a reminder to always work hard and not take the comfort for granted. The family in Indonesia mostly have a similar story, they started as refugees and build their success from zero.

I think Indonesian Chinese deserve a lot of credit for developing the Indonesian economy, however, now we have to turn our attention to increasing the wealth of ordinary Indonesian people. UMR/ minimum wage in Jakarta is only 4.5 juta/ bulan- or about $300- which is not a living wage for anyone. These companies need to start paying people a minimum of 10 million per month and giving them the same opportunities in their own country to advance in the company.
Here my thoughts As a native Indonesian: -"Kejarlah ilmu hingga ke negeri China (persue knowledge to the land of china)" is a famous saying just like "all roads lead to Rome". Since ancient times china just that famous and their influence survive till today modern era so China-indo merchant will have advantages as they re the bridge between 2 land -most of of immigrants (not limited to Chinese) usually works harder in foreign land because they try to gain acknowledgment and better living -chinese people just like Jews in Europe, most of the times they barred from politics seat so their next choice is economy and business. -in colonial times Chinese (plus may be Arab and Indian too) have a status of second class citizen contrary to the local (ofc excluding local ruler) who get third class citizen soo they have better start after the independence But im not worried about them now becouse most of Chindo here in Indonesia already assimilate and love Indonesia all the same, they are our pride denizen too.

It was the Dutch (under VOC) who impose law regarding social classes as the result of military conflict from 1740 to 1743, where the Chinese, after being massacred, decided to fight back and joined forces with the locals (mostly Javanese). The Dutch feared that the joined forces may eventually drive them out from the archipelago, and therefore, must be separated. Even after the colonization era, such treatment persisted until the 4th Indonesian President to abolish the discrimination law.
East Asian are generally successful because they are hardworking, government policy tend to negatively impact their ability in employment which force them into doing business of their own, you see this even in the US and Europe. Their story very closely mirror those of Jews. Jews and Asian develop an early culture in "companies"; the creation of collectives to serve a common purpose. such as many families coming together to fund a school, a hospital, even recreation clubs. having a history of running cooperative makes the formation of business companies more natural to them at a time where modern instrument of financing is yet to be available of individual seeking to build a startup.

Not all Chinese have good trading skills. China is huge, its people are diversified. Most of the Chinese in Southeast Asia were from the two south-most provinces of China, Guangdong and Fujian province. These two provinces have lots of mountains, so historically they are not good at farming but better at trading and had a thousand year's history of trading with foreigners. If you go north to the Yellow river region, Chinese people there are not good traders. They are more conservative and have the traditional value of looking down on any kinds of trading. @@1986verity The best action that the native Malays or bumiputera is to improve their genes, this is very hard to do politically because it would require eugenics and artificial selection but there is a short cut if racial/national pride was to be put aside and that is promoting cross breeding with northern stock like White Jews, Europeans and North East Asians, this will dilute Malay DNA but if the children are reared with a strong Malay identity then in the end they will identify as Malay, just think of it as an upgrade like when modifying cars or breeding dogs and aquarium fishes where desirable traits are allowed to multiply while suppressing unwanted traits; or you can go the long way by Eugenics in which smart people of Malay stock are allowed to breed more while Malay people of less desirable traits are limited in their reproduction until you manage to purify the race with the desired traits although this would be unethical; the way that northerners got their abilities was with natural selection by being agrarian in a cold place with winters where high IQ which helps with planning, aggression and deferral/delay of satisfaction, delayed sexual and physical development/maturity and lessened promiscuity were naturally selected for survival and the survivors bred until the race achieved the IQ mean average we see today, it was a bloody process marked by starvation and violence that continued on a yearly/seasonal basis and something almost impossible to replicate in modern day tropical Malaysia. If the bumiputera were supported politically it would not be sustainable due to the nation not improving overall because it is still populated by the current inhabitants with their weaknesses and will just waste the governments money without improving the situation in the long term, Malaysia forcibly enforcing equality for the bumiputera is the wrong policy and will not achieve the desired results, meritocracy would be better and allowing the upper class to breed more until their genes permeate the general population increasing the IQ mean average of the nation as a whole would be a more acceptable solution; a similar process happened in Europe during the black death where the genetically dumber [but still smarter than tropical races] peasants died and the smarter upper classes survived, some of their children replaced the niche the of the now dead peasants and became the next group of peasants but they carried the genes of their smarter than smart noble parents making the continent as a whole smarter due to the mean average IQ increasing even more from their already high IQ to begin with and in turn helping end the feudal system with greater labor rights.

Many indonesian claim that malaysia is a chinese country, but statistically only 63% of our wealth is control by chinese in malaysia (21% chinese population), in reality in indonesia (3% chinese population) itself more than 85% of their wealth is control by chinese. This is due to the fact that Malaysian constitution grant a special rights to protect malay / pribumi (indigenous) so that wealth can more equally distribute among races. The New Economy Policy that introduces by government so that one day malay / pribumi can have at least 40-50% country wealth. This however hasd pros and cons, i can see that indonesian chinese is more patriotic and they more like to indentify themselves as indonesian, as compared to malaysian chinese they more likely to identify as malaysian chinese, even some of them not really fluent in speaking malay language.
Malaysia practices tolerance amongst different races, whereas in Indonesia, it’s all about assimilation. Chinese Indonesians in the past were forced to assimilate and forget their original roots and mother tongue, to the extent of changing their Chinese names to Indonesian sounding names. Even though they seem more patriotic in terms of their national identity and national language, it wasn’t always that way. These days, the wealthier neighbourhoods in Indonesia are very much dominated by the Chinese Indonesians and rich foreign expats. However, in Malaysia, most of the wealthy neighbourhoods have all races living together in the same area. Therefore, for me, patriotism is more about the tolerance and unity of it’s people, that’s what builds a strong nation. In Malaysia, we are proud of both our Malaysian nationality and also our ethnicity.
@@aNt1P414tAO Its not force, they given choice to choose Indonesia or china. the one who choose Indonesia can stay and become indonesian. the one who choose china will be send back out of the country. its simply a choice.. different with Malaysia who rank 2 in the most racist country in the world with the apartheid system who differentiate between its citizens. because malay citizen have more right and privileged compared to non malay. its clearly structural racism embedded in the law.. thats why their Chinese citizens are less patriotic since they are discriminated by the country system.

It was also most likely due to = - minority and immigrant mindset. Yes, even in the US. Indonesian descent there are richer than Chinese, though their number are far fewer. - both Dutch and Native used them as middle-men minority to handle money. Like the Jews in Europe. - Dutch colonial gave them many economic privileges to divide the society based on class because Natives and Chinese continuously help each other (Java War, Yellow War, Kongxi War). - New Order regime gave them many economic privileges, because they're less likely to challenge Soeharto rule because Soeharto also press the issue that 'Chinese' are not 'real indonesian'.

The Chinese who immigrated to other countries were mostly opposed to the new feudal system. Most were big merchants and mandarins under the old regime. And they come with assets, available trading platforms. So economic dominance is not surprising. And everone shouldn't be racist either.
I never know when this term applies in Indonesia, Indonesia does not know chindo but Chinese, the word chindo is not like in Indonesia but Chinese is already a tribe in Indonesia
I’m afraid overseas Chinese may experience a riot like this in western countries. I’ve recently realised how crazy rich the Indonesian Chinese were during colonial times. They benefited from trading with the european colonisers and it needs to be in history books! The national Chinese qipao or cheongsam dress was made fashionable by a Chinese Indonesian heiress who also became the First Lady of ROC ! Do mainland Chinese people know this? The Chindos were so rich they influenced China!
It's even before European colonizer or VOC established it's first holding in D.E.I. So, the assumption that Chindo become rich because trade with european is wrong.
What happened to East Dutch company charted that belong to the King? All the belongings and company was protected by law and legal rights? Do you guys ever heard about Sarawak kingdom?
Same goes in Malaya, they're partner with British (Indian end up being slave to British, getting same treatment like other indigenous people), thought right now, most chinese race can't accept this facts.. Only after Japan colonisation, then they help fight together for independence. Kinda like a joke, but who are we to change the history facts right?
Hardworking + capital and most importantly monopoly is key to corner a country’s economy to a single group of people. With money you can control the politicians to mould policies to one’s favour. A super huge wealth disparity between the super rich Chinese and the rest will continue as the super rich will always keep most of their money overseas ie. Singapore leaving only the working capital at Indonesian banks. They are still the minorities. Things like the 1998 riots may still happen.
In Indonesia there is no difference, because all have become Indonesian citizens, and the ethnic Chinese in Indonesia only use Indonesian. Don't use mandarin, so please don't bring up the 1998 incident here... very sensitive. PANCASILA
I know of quite a few chindos who went to school in Australia. One is an engineer who has never worked for anyone other than his wealthy dad's company in aus. One who married another rich chindo and has never worked a day in her life even after she was divorced from said rich chindo. Lives in aus despite her family in Indonesia. Another who has some how set up multiple businesses upon finishing studies in australia and going back to Indonesia. None of those people would ever acknowledge how much their generational wealth and their parents' capital have propped them up in life even when directly asked the question. There's even a chindo who went on an aussie cooking tv show and denied he had an advantage despite his mother being a famous chef in Indonesia and his brother being a judge on the indo version of the cooking show. Went to an expensive private school in aus and still went on the cooking show with some sob story about going without when he was young. This is such a contrast to my friend who is half native indo and half australian and has no such wealth or privilege despite growing up in Australia. Sad that chindos ive known and know of wont acknowlede their privilege especially when you think about how much wealth chindos control in Indonesia, much of which was historically made off of less advantaged native indonesians Tbf tho, the unwillingness to acknowledge privilege is not limited to chindos. It seems to be a human problem caused by wanting to appear as though you've worked hard and acted ethically and been treated equally to get to where you are. After all, we all want to believe we're a good person

Diligence is one of the important reasons that make people rich.

My parents and grandparents are Indonesian Chinese (but I was not born in Indonesia), and they are very proud of their heritage. To date my parents still eat Indonesian food and speak Indonesian language at home with their relatives.
Yes, because the Chinese ethnic who were born here were involved in colonial wars, they were taking side with the natives to fight the colonizers while also helping to build the foundation of Indonesia in, so it's not surprising if many Chinese indonesians love Indonesia because they are part of it
I am Malaysian-Chinese. I love my country and can speak Malay but there is no way I could compromise my Chinese culture and heritage.
The Chinese people living in other countries became very rich due to one simple reason, they were very poor when they arrived in that country. And they tried very hard to find a way out of that situation.
Exactly
Some of them were wealthy to begin with. They were merchants trading spices in Southeast Asia. The European colonisers favoured them.

Here my thoughts As a native Indonesian:
-"Kejarlah ilmu hingga ke negeri China (persue knowledge to the land of china)" is a famous saying just like "all roads lead to Rome". Since ancient times china just that famous and their influence survive till today modern era so China-indo merchant will have advantages as they re the bridge between 2 land
-most of of immigrants (not limited to Chinese) usually works harder in foreign land because they try to gain acknowledgment and better living
-chinese people just like Jews in Europe, most of the times they barred from politics seat so their next choice is economy and business.
-in colonial times Chinese (plus may be Arab and Indian too) have a status of second class citizen contrary to the local (ofc excluding local ruler) who get third class citizen soo they have better start after the independence
But im not worried about them now becouse most of Chindo here in Indonesia already assimilate and love Indonesia all the same, they are our pride denizen too.
That's a hadith saying. Not an indonesian saying

Its cuz of Soeharto era he brainwashed Indonesians people to hate Chinese. But now not anymore. Originally some ethnicities in Indonesia are historically from Yunnan, South China and Taiwan. Related close to Chinese minority in Yunnan. That's what happen to Indonesians when they go to Kunming or China. Most Chinese from China consider Indonesians as Chinese minority from Yunnan
As an Indonesian and living witness , I saw what happens in 1998. I am truly sad, horrified and as well as ashamed what happens then because we do not want this to happen anymore. Thanks to both leadership of Gus Dur and Ibu Megawati after 2001, they have turned upside down all racial stigma againat our minority Indonesian ( sorry i really dont want to call them " chindo" or " Indonesian of Chinese descendants" ) . Jokowi is the product of this radical change and nearly majority of Indonesian minorities ( me included) are very proud of him as our leader. He cemented a strong friendship with President Xi of China. That why now we have a High Speed Train in Indonesia with China. A new generation of non racial.bias is borned in Indonesia ( the Gen Z ). Pretty soon the race BS bias will be gone with the advancement of Social Media, digital economy etc.
BTW, trading is deemed as almost the lowest type of jobs in Chinese culture in history, be a scholar is the highest.

I scrolled through quite many comments but have not seen people mentioning one of the reasons some chinese are successful is because of confucianism teaching and upbringing in the culture. This idealism was also introduced into Japanese and Korean culture which inspire them to be hardworking, respecting the elderly and striving for betterment of yourself.
Although many pitiful chindo are not able to study chinese in school, those of us who could elsewhere learnt classic chinese literature full of confucian philosophy. Other than that, these virtues could also be taught through parents and chinese society.
No. It isn't. Chinese Confucianism or even Chinese as a race is not that special nor superior to any other teachings/races in Indonesia.
Just like Jews in Germany, Chinese in Indonesia are discriminated against. Chinese in Indonesia are different from other hundreds of ethnic groups in Indonesia. Madurans can becomes religious leaders, Javanese can be civil servants, Christian Ambonese can join the army, Balinese can join the police force, what about the Chinese ? They can't. The last time a Chinese politician join in politics there're huge protests in the country. The last Chinese minister were 20 years ago (Kwik Kian Gie) and that was after through so much hurdle to put him there.
They're shunned from state's affairs, politics, military and state owned enterprises, etc.... so what do you gonna do in situation like that ? doing private business of course. They accumulate their wealth from generation to generation so much so that the government can't expel them like Jews in Germany or Whites in Rhodesia without collapsing the state first. In some sense their wealth protects them from persecution.

Fascist mentality, don't cry when you get discrimination again.
