Eleanor Lavish, Lady Brachnal, "M", "The Elemental" and a bunch of other roles I don't have time to cross reference but you did them so effortlessly and believable. You rock Dame Judi!!!!!!

My first exposure to Judi Dench were the sitcoms she made for the BBC in the 80s and 90s, first with her husband Michael Williams, and then the wonderful Geoffrey Palmer. These were fairly gentle takes on middle aged love and relationships, congenial and comfortable, but not jaw dropping. They did not prepare for my first experience of Dench on stage, playing Mrs Armefeldt in Sondheim's _A Little Night Music_. She's not much of a singer in any conventional sense, but playing an actress becoming aware that she is past her prime, she sang the part brilliantly. And she was _so_ incredibly sexy, she was magnetic, you couldn't take your eyes offer. One scene she played with her long time lover while supposedly eating a sandwhich, which she used as a prop, waving it about, gesticulating with it, and generally putting it anywhere but into her mouth. She was teasing him, with a bloody sandwich! Absolutely briliant. Her face is like a mask that can transform in an instant, to convey any emotion a human can have, without her really doing anything very much. She doesn't have to vamp, gurn or pull faces. It is as if she is being illuminated from within by the colours of a feeling. That is what those tedious film executives missed when they spoke to her as a young actress in such crushing terms. She was beautiful, but they did not have the gift of seeing it. Meryl Streep tells a similar story, and has a similar gift for using her face like a projection screen.

I fell in love with Dame Judi when we borrowed a Shakespeare's play in Senegal, starting Ephesus (Dad had to tell us that it was s real place and where it was,,,!!!,) The actors were all brilliant, but the star WAS Judi. And she wasn't even super-pretty, which surprised me. We were so used to SUPER-PRETTY STARS in the 80s and 90s. Go to HELL, YOU'RE PRETTY WHEN YOU WANNA BE!!! And it's ABSOLUTELY YOU PRETTY-PARTY, when you want it to be (Ugly cry if you want to!!!) And God BLESS.

There's beauty, which in showbiz can be somewhat formulaic, in the nicest possible way; and then there is charisma, which Judi has in spades, when she is in-role. As you say, its difficult to look away when she is on stage, and it means she can be tremendously sexy. This is a spirited, passionate woman, not merely a vehicle for a stylish wardrobe.
