As a toddler, my dear Mom would recite this poem to me before putting me to bed. I loved this poem so much that I would often dream the scene and imagine myself at sea... in that beautiful pea green boat. Thank you, Dame Judy Dench, for the precious memories. ❤️

Utterly charming. Oh to dance by the light of the moon with the same elegance with which Dame Judi performs this classic tale, or perhaps “tail” as this is about a cat and an owl, after all.

I was there at the Gielgud Theatre in the front row that Sunday afternoon. Dame Judi and Giles Brandreth were so entertaining with their wonderful stories and memories. It was a privilege to be there in the presence of greatness.

I remember this poem, my mother read it to me before going to sleep. I thought they were dancing a jig. Later I changed my thinking. Theye were dancing a slow, sensual walks, paw to wing and check to check. After sll, they deeply in love, having sailed together, for a year and a day seeking a ring.

Orginally a nursery rhyme for toddlers. But recited so eloquently as classical literature. Brilliant.

I am so sorry to say this, because I was read this poem as a child by my grandmother. It was a poem I very much enjoyed.
There are certain words in the culture that contain more potential for harm than others and can cause splits for some individuals, depending on their psychological makeup. The word “pussy” carries much negative derogatory association and can undermine the dignity of others.
I don’t want to “cancel” this poem in any way but I just want to make people aware of the potential impact of words that have changed meaning in the culture in our lifetimes. We all have a responsibility to reject negative connotations that may lead to harm and embrace the positive connotations that may lead to deeper connection.
I believe that we have choice in rejecting language that promotes emotiona entanglement.
In this light, we should reject all derogatory alienation, including racism in all its forms, and hate in all its forms.
We should non-identify with language itself and see ourselves as the creator of language with the choice to define it.

The reason why this poem is the most loved childrens’ poem in the English language is because it shows the sole purpose of human life on earth, which is to find God. The author, Edward Lear, had visited India, and was probably blessed by a holy man there that he would write a poem that would be loved by all. So here is a quick analysis of the poem. The owl represents the oversoul, which is Spirit or God. The pussy-cat represents the individual soul, which is you and me. So pussy set off in the greatest adventure a human can have, viz. the quest to merge with Spirit. The pea green boat represents planet earth, and honey and money represents the essentials one needs to live on this planet. In the next verse, we hear the owl speak to the pussy, which is the only time he does in the poem. He declares, in beautiful words, the unconditional love God has for the individual soul, and looks forward to the day when both will be merged as one. In the following verse, pussy realises that it is only God that can truly love a human, and expresses its frustration that it has not merged with Spirit for such a long time. Pussy also realises that a definite path ( the ring ) is needed to achieve this.
In the next verse pussy tries various ways of reaching the Spirit, but finds out this is only possible by way of spiritualising the consciousness by ascending the tree of life ( the Bong tree )via the chakras. It finds a teacher ( the guru ), in a forest, who agrees to give it a definite method of reaching its goal ( the ring ) for a token sum.
Pussy then applies this method and was cleansed enough the next day for merging with the Spirit. This is achieved on top of the hill where the turkey resides. The turkey represents the last chakra, with its thousand petals( a turkey fanning its tail feathers ) only where the union of the individual soul and spirit is possible.
Once merged with Spirit, the innocent pleasures of earth can be tasted ( the dinner ), without incurring karma. The joy of the individual spirit merging with God produces ever new joy, and the purpose of human life is finally accomplished - dancing hand in hand on the edge of the sand by the light of the moon.

Was Edward Lear taking the same mind-altering-expanding substances and cocktails as Lewis Carroll? Their lives both spanned most of the Victorian 19th Century.
I bet they often met for Mad Hatter ('herbal') tea-parties with lots of runcible spoons, owls and pussycats..
PS. Dench's rendition was disappointingly flat, boring, too quick and un-expressive. My RADA-trained sister Moira G does a far more magical job. Even Billy Connelly's RUclips'd rendition is way better than Dench's flat, mundane effort. Sorry - but the too-revered "Dame" Dench sometimes excels, sometimes falls flat.
