In my Mother’s Mexican kitchen, she never soaked pinto beans and I continue the same. I do however, always check for stones and debris before rinsing. It’s just habit. We kids loved “bean soup” topped with onions and cotija cheese paired with fresh homemade buttered tortillas. Comfort food!

Sorry. I had to take a break before I could hear the rest of your video for the outcome.
It seems that there is almost no difference than if you had used fresher beans only you do need to cook the older beans longer, and that makes sense.
    Thanks.❤

I've always heard if using old beans you've had stored to use a pressure cooker to cook them. It's been awhile and we don't eat beans very often in my house and my memory isn't what it used to be so looked it up on the internet and they agreed that you use a pressure cooker and cook the beans for 30 minutes in the pressure cooker. I sure enjoy your videos and glad you came through the hurricane okay!

Thank you VERY much for conducting this experiment and letting us know the process. My Mom used to cook beans using the soaking overnight method, but I didn’t remember the particulars. I also appreciate your mentioning the crockpot aspect: I’ll use the crockpot method then when the beans are fresher. I also recall when Mom made these I liked to put some ketchup over them in my bowl. Not sure how long a bottle of ketchup would last in the pantry, but I think you could either do that or put a can of diced tomatoes in to ‘freshen it up.’ I really, really appreciate your doing this video! Looking forward to more videos where you use some of your prepping supplies, though I do enjoy all of your cooking videos, not just the prepping ones. 🥰👍🏻🌹❤️

I thought I heard you don’t add salt to the beans when your first cooking them cuz it makes them hard. You can add it after they’ve soften real good and use the rest of your seasonings. That’s what I learned from my late soon to be MIL and quite a few other Hispanic cook I know. It’s worked for me but still takes a long while for them to cook. Good to know dried beans can last for years. Thank y’all.

For older beans I would withhold all salt, using half teaspoon of the baking soda in the cooking water until tender, then add salt and other seasonings. Of course, we are supposed to rotate our preps so they don't get so old, but it's good to know from this experiment, what to expect in case we miss rotating any items. I have some navy beans prepped because they are small and hopefully will cook more quickly. If fuel is scarce, we will need to consider how long items need to cook, to conserve the fuel. Hope everyone is doing something in these times, With so many food warehouses burning,(getting close tp 200 nationwide), chicken ranches burning or birds being destroyed due to bird flu, beef cattle dying, etc, etc, food shortages are coming.

❤ Great job on the soup beans. My Mama always looked her beans and soaked them overnight. I have soaked mine but patience isn’t my strong suit. 😂 My cousin who grew up down in the country putting up canned goods etc and is a very good cook, told me you can look , wash beans then put them in a microwave safe bowl with several inches of water over the tops of the rewatched beans and put them in the microwave for about an hour on high. Then finish off on the stovetop. Of course these were not done with beans that had been stored. Mama pressured her soup beans 🫘 a lot of time. We grew up on soup beans with onions, chow chow, squash relish and I knew one man who liked beets in his and other who liked Mayo. (Not for me) The only thing i require for my beans is cornbreqd. Continue to pray for the deve station from the storm. My power did not go off but my siblings did . Some folks still have no power. I don’t know the count of the known dead or missing. I heard that the lovely town of Asheville , NC has been all but destroyed. So much historical areas just ruined. I heard they are expecting another hurry an this week. I pray it is not so. God bless you both. Marie, my old back has flared up again for the past couple of days. I thought of you. 🙏🏻🎁❤️❤️

You guys sure made them look good. Now I think I'm going to have to cook up a pot of beans cornbread and fried taters😊 God bless. That was a fun experiment, now I know if I get an old bag of beans to just keep on cooking it. I've started cooking my pinto beans in the instant pot instead of 30 minutes. Like they say I cook them for 90 and then a little more if they need it. I don't want a mushy but I do like them tender. My dad called me the other day and said he had fried up some green tomatoes. Sure, made me want a pot of beans now. You guys just polished it off haha

Baking soda takes the residue off the beans by washing the beans in a teaspoon of it. I’ve never heard of baking soda doing anything but washing the residue off of them.

Hi Marie and Calvin, reguarding your beans my brother bought the great value pinto beans and they didn’t cook well at all! Some were soft and some were like rock hard!!! My boyfriend Frank had the same problem with the great value pinto beans too. I always buy the casserole pinto beans at Walmart they are GREAT! No problems with these beans I hope your Walmart sells them where you live. Pinto beans only take 2 and a half hours to cook not 4 hours. Remember Casserole pinto beans are the best and I hope your Walmart has them. We’ll have a good day and please keep them videos coming! God Bless you both! Alicia
