Pinto Beans:
1 lb pinto beans
1 head of garlic
1 onion
3 bay leaves
1 tbsp salt
Instructions:
1. Look through the dry pinto beans to remove any small rocks or weird pieces.
2. Add dried pinto beans to a large bowl cove them with water and let soak for 4-8 hours or overnight.
3. After soaking, drain the beans from the soaking water.
4. Add the soaked beans to a large pot along with enough water to cover them by 2 inches. Add the onion, garlic and bay leaves.
5. Bring the beans to boil on a medium high heat and let them cook for about 1 1/2 - 2 1/2 hours.
6. At the 1 hour mark of cooking, season the beans with the salt. Mix to combine and keep cooking until fully tender.
7. Test the tenderness of the beans by placing a bean between your fingers, if it smashes easily with no hesitation, the beans are ready to enjoy.
8. You can use these beans in any recipe you’d use beans for, or divide them into zip lock baggies and store in freezer for whenever you need beans.
To make refried beans:
Ingredients:
2-3 cups cooked pinto beans
3 tbsp cooking fat (oil or lard)
1 onion, diced
1 Jalapeño, diced
1 Roma tomato, diced
1 tsp salt
1 tsp black pepper
Instructions:
1. To a large skillet on medium heat, add the cooking fat of your choice, once hot, add the onion and jalapeños. Cook until softened, about 5-8 minutes.
2. Add the tomatoes & cook for another 4-8 minutes.
3. Season with salt & pepper.
4. Add the cooked pinto beans and mix to combine, let them come to a simmer.
5. With a potato masher or immersion blender, mash the beans until you get your desired consistency, I prefer a chunkier refried bean so I use a potato masher.
6. Once mashed, the beans are ready to enjoy, you can keep simmering the beans for anywhere from 5-10 minutes if you want a thicker consistency.
7. Beans are ready to enjoy in your favorite recipes!
Hope you enjoy & please let me know if you have any other requests.
Love the idea of adding jalapeños/tomato/onion to refried!
It’s sooo delicious
Same here! I can't wait to try to make this.
Dude, I’m so glad I found your channel! Thanks!
Great instructions. Thank you!
I often soak beans with a tablespoons of apple cider vinegar to further remove most of phytic acids, lectins and other nasties on the skins. 🐻 and I love seasoning my cooked beans with fish sauce instead of salt.
The Apple Cider Vinegar was a Great idea, I never would had thought of that... 👍👍👍👍👍
Looks great..can’t wait to make some 😊
Oh wow! Yummy
This is how I make my charro beans, stopping short of mashing. However I did use my charro beans to make refried beans before and they were the BEST refried beans I ever had. yummy
I made charro beans with the rest of these beans, filmed a video for TT/Insta, will have it up this week 😋
Same although it was a can of charro beans from the store. It was all I had at the time i cooked them and then mashed them until smooth. Best refried beans ever! Now its all I use.
Awesome 😊
More videos!!! I love your recipes and am always trying to recreate authentic Mexican food! 🤗👏🏼
Refried beans look Yummm!!
Thanks
Looks great! I am pretty loyal to my slow cooker. I love how the house smells when I make beans for dinner.
Was always intimidated at the thought of trying to make refried beans but this makes it look so easy! (Also thank you for your Mexican fried chicken sandwich & dip recipes - they’re both frequent favorites in our house!)
Ty for this video! My mom gave me 5 bags of pinto beans! Will def have to try this!!!
Yum! I am new here love your videos
Thank you. Just found your page on Instagram. New fan here.👋
Just like familias !! Like the onions tomatoes and peppers at the end !! Like you said you would use lard on them o also like bacon grease for the refrying!! Gonna use the hell out of it !! Great recipe !!
Very nice. I would be tempted to add a bit of garlic too.
Just a suggestion, it would've been nice if you ended with some served in a bowl, just to see the very end result plated up as it were! Maybe with some bread. I was waiting for that!
Delicious. Waste not, want not for me, I'd have kept that beautiful garlic and the onion from the long cook. I love beans, they're so great with so many things to enjoy. 😊❤
Great Video, The Freezing the Beans was a Big +, Now I can have my Beans last for a longer time (Great Tip)... 👍👍👍👍👍
PLEASE PLEASE make full length videos on RUclips that would be awesome 😆☺️☺️
So yummy!
Very 😋😋😋
❤ I am a new subscriber! Love your work. Any ideas on how to make beans less gassy? Eres el mero mero. You know your stuff.
I had some leftover taco meat and only soft tacos remaining from "taco night". What should I make from these leftovers? I decided to make some beans (first time), and try for a burrito. After soaking overnight, I was pleasantly surprised when my beans were done with only a one hour cooking time! Wow, the beans are absolutely delicious in this recipe. Soooo flavorful! I love the fact that going forward, I can cut my meat in half by supplementing with beans. Excellent recipe Freddsters! Thanks for sharing! fyi- I added cheddar cheese to the beans, because ....cheddar makes it better!
My great aunt used bacon grease sometimes 🤷🏻♀️
Wow.. I love for you to make charro beans.. or even frijoles puercos I just here people talk about them 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Because of my cholesterol levels I can't add oil to my beans. So I add more water instead but not too much. But enough water & I let them cook longer until they thicken. Then they thicken that way like putting oil in them.
😍
We make them the same way. Those refried beans same also. But I’d probably eat em all in 3 days 😂
I love your videos. Do you ever make huaraches? Or sopes? I love them but have never made either of them
I’ve shared a couple videos on sopes & one on huaraches a couple months ago on both Tik Tok & Instagram
Do you ever use epazote in your beans?
I used smokes turkey wings/legs for meat flavor in my homemade pinto beans
I have a question - how do kids get accustomed to the heat of the peppers ?
Be careful not to add hot liquid to plastic maybe I was wrong watching the video but I always recommend yes the video was fantastic I will share 😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
have you ever tried this in the slow cooker?
I haven’t, but I’m sure it would work
What if I don’t have that garlic I have minced
I don’t like onions is it a must to add onions?
It is your pot of beans. Leave the onion out.
Soaking the beans makes them more easily digestible.
For the most part the wives tale of not salting your beans while cooking is nonsense. Maybe back in the pioneer days when cooking over a camp fire. It might add a few minutes to the cooking process but that is it. If your beans are reasonably fresh it should not effect outcome of your beans. Great looking dish.
Not a good recipe.
What’s your reason? Just curious….
I just met you on here whilst searching out ideas but I see we have the same ideas and any new ones I haven’t thought about (like freezing beans), and are useful I truly appreciate, so gracias! 🥹🫶🏽.
