  • I discovered a bad cell that short-circuited and has 0 V within my Chevy volt battery pack. This caused problems balancing the battery. This pack came from a 2013 Chevy volt salvage vehicle with low miles and I have used it for about a year and put on roughly 2000 electric miles in my 1971 Karmann Ghia EV Conversion. I was not running a battery management system at the time and have since added battery balancers which is how I found out about the bad cell.

    Dr. Nasar, great videos, I'm now a subscriber, can you tell me about how you like MACI procedure? have more patients received it?

      I’ve only done one so far. The results have been outstanding. She’s highly satisfied and recovered very well.

    Got a similar problem (though not as bad as yours - no swelling) with an identical 50V Volt pack. One cell in mine is always seems about 100mV different than all the others, which are balanced within about 50mV or so. Any idea how to swap/replace a cell in one of these? Any suggestions for sources for spare cells? I do have a BMS on mine, but I'm pretty dubious that it's actually working - never seems to balance any better than what I said...though, maybe that's all the BMS can do...Thanks!

      I think it is difficult to properly replace a bad cell within a module. You have to replace the module. They can be purchased on ebay for about $350 for 48 volt module.

    what are you going to do with this pack of cells?

      Terry a - I was planning on cutting it up into individual cell pouches and testing them and then selling the ones that are still good but I’m not sure there is a market for that.

    What was the indication that the battery might be bad?

      The pouch cell is generating gas which means electrolyte degeneration and puffs up the bag or pouch, it's also not creating any voltage

    Im looking at a 2012 chevy volt and the guy says the battery is getting 21miles per charge how do i raise it back to original numbers?

      Test the modules, if there is a bad module, replace it. If all of the cells are simply degraded, there is no fix.

      @@AlanSNasar thank you!
      How do i check them?

    • @AlanSNasar
      @AlanSNasar  Год назад

      @@sergioknuf if you have a complete pack, it has 96 cells total. If you check the total voltage and divide by 96, that is the amount that each cell should be. You need a voltmeter to do this. You then check each module or each cell individually, and make sure that the cells are all approximately the same voltage, +\-.05 V. If any cell has significantly different voltage, that module is a bad module.

      @@AlanSNasar can individual cells be replaced ?

    • @AlanSNasar
      @AlanSNasar  Год назад

      @@sergioknuf No. They are welded together, cannot be removed from modules.
