Just to add on as to why Pineapples symbolise wealth: Pineapples are a tropical fruit and represent access to the colonies where the warmer weather allowed for pineapples to be successfully harvested. Therefore, only those in higher class families could afford to buy pineapples or to garner pineapples from offshore plantations. Having pineapples in meals, as decorations and even on wallpaper (green wallpaper pineapple motifs were loaded with arsenic) was a manner of representing wealth, power and control over one's house and colonial investments. Quite a loaded history behind the popular fruit symbol. I'm not sure if its related but I also remember hearing that having a pineapple symbol carved into a door symbolised swingers and/or party culture.
@@lucyromanoff654 the arsenic created vibrant colour greens (like emerald) and eventually it was used in Other colours like yellow to made them more vibrant and have a variety of shades. Honestly don't look at me but every time jack talks it kind of restores my faith in humanity. Like i watch these when i need something comforting. Thanks for existing??
Hi Jack. I jsut wanted to say that you're very kindhearted and very generous when it comes to offering literature-related content for all of us to enjoy. I hope you continue to become more successful than you already are. God bless and best of luck.
new yorker here!! pineapple st is a really nice/rich street in brooklyn near the brooklyn bridge. the next block over is called orange st, the next block after is called cranberry st. so maybe it’s not only talking about their lives on pineapple st but about this particular area in brooklyn that is synonymous with the wealthy
Pineapple street is a real place in Brooklyn Heights, where the book is set (and where the author lives). It's an incredibly wealthy neighborhood, with some of the most beautiful brownstones in the city, architecture that is symbolic of wealth in New York - on the tree lined streets of Brooklyn's wealthiest neighborhoods, and tucked away in corners of the Upper East Side (where Gossip Girl is set and where Bloomberg owns several houses). I grew up in Brooklyn and went to school nearby - there is a cafe on the corner of Pineapple street and Henry that is incredibly nostalgic for me. I'm really excited for this book.
Got very excited when you mentioned Calvino's Cosmicomics. It's one of my favorite books and I hope you will give it a go and enjoy it as much as I did and hopefully do a brief review of it. I would love to hear your thoughts on it someday!! I enjoy watching your book hauls (and videos in general), your excitement is really contagious. :)
HI Jack! I am coming here with a book recommendation that I don't know if you have read. It's called "Witch light" by Susan Fletcher. It also goes by "Corrag". I borrowed it from my local British council library here is India and it was simply stunning. I have never read a book that is THAT picturesque since then. I wanted to own a copy so i looked high and low for a copy I can afford but apparently it's so underrated, it's not even available in inida. But since it is by a British author, you might have more luck.It is basically about an alleged witch called Corrag who escapes her village after her mother is captured on the allegations of witchcraft as well. She runs off to the Scottish highlands where she is still pursued by authorities. She survives in nature and finally tries to assimilate into a highlandic (is that correct?) time when tragedy strikes. It's absolutely stunning and heartbreaking and I think is exactly the kind of book you would love. I think it needs WAY more love than it gets. Hope you see this and hope you enjoy! Love from India!
Just to add to how insanely I have been affected by this book. It has been 8 years since I last read it. I have wanted to read it again since then but couldn't because couldn't buy a copy. And I am still trying to recommend this lol.
jack, you’re on of my favorite book creators. i would love a video of other options that someone could read instead of ‘carrie soto’ since that book is very hurtful to marginalized communities
Quick book recommendation Jack, She’s Up to No Good by Sara Goodman Confino. It’s the story of a Jewish American family through multiple generations and split perspective. It’s about overcoming ethnic barriers, generational wisdom, family trauma, and community. I listened to it and fell in love. I think it and it’s cover are right up your alley!
i always watch your videos after studying, and sometimes before or even during studying. you always are something to wait for towards the day! and im a new sub as well, so best believe i'll binge watch everything. 😭 luv ya jack!
Just to note that the author of the girl and her cat is actually makoto shinkai, who is also a japanese animator who made Your Name(a.k.a Kimi no nawa) and Weathering With You, two very popular animes.
When I was in graduate school I was in a production of Edward Albee‘s adaptation of “Ballad of the Sad Cafe” that I really loved being a part of. It is a fascinating story, and the original novella is haunting.
Hey Jack! Am gonna just innocently add a book to you immense tbr that I think you will adore! It is “Broken Wings” by Khalil Gibran! Hope you have the time to read it and immerse yourself in Gibran’s superb writing!!
Jack if you haven’t read Tale for the Time Being it’s absolutely *phenomenal*. Easily the best Ruth Ozeki and I think you’ll enjoy the concept very much. Feels very deeply Japanese and also American
Pineapple street is actually a real street in Brooklyn, and it’s next to orange street (which might be why there’s an orange on the cover? not sure), and cranberry street!
OH MY GOD please please please read Pushkin, he is so brilliant, his words just flow right off the page into your mind and his writing is the most smooth and beautiful you can ever read (in the original, I mean, but I'm sure penguin has top-notch translators). personally I prefer Captain's Daughter, but Queen of Spades is also *chef's kiss*
I just saw your story about the cat book, and I'm a bit apprehensive?, but Makoto Shinkai is one of my favourite directors so I will definitely be reading it at some point
jackkkkk!!!!! please read a tale for a time being by ruth ozeki its one of my favourite books of all time, so good and a lot better than the book of form and emptiness

It's an upside down pineapple that's the symbol of swingers... But yeah there's a lot of weird symbolism that goes into this spikey fruit!
I was told for so long that if you have pineapple decorations or like pineapples on your door or whatever it's just a symbol of being welcoming.
Wait, what do u mean they were loaded with arsenic? Like the wallpaper was poisonous?! (sorry if this is a stupid q)

My one critique is this video is that I felt deprived of a satisfying lined-up spine shot of the clothbound classics. Everything else superb.
I loved She and her cat, it's sweet and nostalgic at the same time ✨
SHE AND HER CAT IS ONE OF MY FAVORITES!! Excellent haul!
He gave it 2 🌟 rating 💔
It is always interesting to me how the publishers choose the cover art. Often, I prefer the cover of the book from another country.

Anyone else watches this purely for the 'oouuhh's and 'aaahhh's that Jack always does when opening boxes...? I absolutely love that! 😃
Loved this video ! Usually I don't really like book hauls, but yours are always so nice to watch !
