  • When the Skate franchise first came out it was the first skateboarding franchise to rival Tony Hawks Pro Skater. With it's open world, upgraded skate mechanics, and updated graphics, it took the world by storm. But as Skate 2 and 3 came out, the game got better, but players seemed to be falling off. Now, 12 years after it's release Skate 3 is starting to make a major comeback on new consoles.

that's the thing that annoyed me throughout this whole video, he was speaking as if skate culture just died completely and nobody knew what it was anymore and that tik tok revived it in recent years when that's not the case at all lol. It just wasn't mainstream anymore and became a thing for people that actually cared about it and were passionate about it. Skate culture never died it just went out of the public's view and went away from the hivemind zombies that plague everything in the mainstream, it wasn't a bandwagon thing and was for the people who were interested in it. It wasn't "revived" in the past few years by tik tok, a lot of people on tik tok just found it late and are acting like it never existed until now. The internet has always been full of skate videos, even in the years where it wasn't mainstream. The culture was never buried, i think it's just now people are starting to make a big deal out of it again on tik tok because that's the culture tik tok has created. People find something that has already existed for ages and then make a big deal out of it and act like it's this new quirky thing nobody knows about. There definitely has been a resurgence recently of skaters and skate culture which I am glad of.

The skate 2 map was much more detailed than 3. It feels like a lived in city where as 3 lacked the detailed textures. Everything was much more smooth and gray in 3. Skate 2 was also one large continuous map where 3 was broken up into sections that had to load. For me, the perfect game would be the Skate 2 map with the skate 3 engine. 😬

Sure it's janky sometimes but it satisfies the urge to skate a spot over and over again until you land a line or trick. Skate 3 will always hold a dear place in my heart for how many hours I've poured into it but it's far from perfect, Skate 2 is the superior game in the series so if you want to stick to the skate franchise 2 is your best bet. Used to grind (literally) tony hawk games back on the PS1 and PS2 era, it is also the reason why I took upon skateboarding myself back when I was a small boy. The first Skate game I was mind blown on how the play style was and obviously it had more of a realistic (till exploits was discovered) skating experience. Me and my friends took the own spots to a whole new level and we would find random areas and compete purely on who can do the best trick on a random spot and claim it! It was so much fun! Currently right now I’ve re-downloaded Skate, as it’s the only skate game I’ve played as when Skate 2 came out I was an adult and was focusing on working and less time skating or even playing skateboarding games. Just me playing the first training area had me filled with memories on this game! I’m gonna give Skate 3 a try as many have said it’s the better game outta the 3. But my question is, is online still a thing? Because Skate servers are all offline and it’s quite upsetting as I met so many random people who was chill back then.

Two things your leaving out though. Tony Hawk's Underground story was massive. It was so time-accurate, the clothing system, the characters, the hype around skaters like Tony Hawk, Rodney Mullen, Bam Margera, Chad Muska and being able to skate with them, hear them in a story-mode. That was breaking. By playing it you got to learn the community. Then Skate came and obviously the trick system was better but both games failed to do what Underground had done, a great story and forming an introduction to what the skateboarding community actually was. Everyone remembers the classis McTwist over a helicopter in Hawaii.
Besides that it was a great game for teenagers growing up, skating in that stripclub and having the bouncer throw you out, tagging posters and stickers across the city, grinding over a car where two people were getting it on. It was a game with a lot of edge that felt exciting, rebellious and like a learning phase for teenagers. The developers just simply didn't know that the little things were the gems making the game so good.

Met so many awesome people in online freeskate and just messing around with glitches and challenges was the highlight of my entire PS3 ownership. I'm pretty sure the surge and hunger for a new skate game was inevitable by the community, but really got a push when Steve Berra and the other guys from the Berrics were pushing for it on social media, and then before I knew it, every EA post on Instagram was flooded with "Make EA Skate Again" or just "Skate 4" spam. It was a wild time, and without such a hardcore community, it would have never happened. Cuz said it himself in the original announcement, and during that announcement, I actually shed a tear of joy. After getting into the playtest and seeing how open the developers are with their progress for the new game while fully taking in community feedback, I 100% believe this series is getting a full revival. Super stoked to see what comes next, but as you said, even if it flops, we will always have Skate 3 and it will always be a banger.

  • @JReaLBiz86

I stopped playing Skate 3 when my 360 was stolen. But I've filled that void with Skater XL and Session: Skate Sim.
I wasn't the one playing S3 in an arcade-y way (unless I had to for a mission). I cranked up the physics difficulty to hardcore and I'd "fakeskate", which is what old heads like me called skating realistically in EA's Skate games.
There was an entire culture behind it, including websites like LikeButter Magazine dedicated to hosting contests, posting videos, and showing off custom board graphics from the community. It was awesome.
And though it's not on as large a scale, that same culture still exists behind games like SXL and Session. As mentioned in this video, the skate culture and, thus, skateboard gaming culture, never really died out. It just went quiet for a while.
But those games changed the lives of tons of kids like me who weren't good on a real piece of plywood but still loved the art and sport of skateboarding enough to spend hours sessioning spots to land sick tricks and lines, film them, and show them off to our peers.
EA is bringing back the Skate franchise. This video mentioned that they were seeing diminishing returns with each release, although their games were critically acclaimed throughout. So why would a mega company like EA revive a decade-old franchise that didn't seem worth the investment after the third installment?
Because of people like me. Who got Skater XL and Session early access, because we wanted the satisfaction and sense of accomplishment that came with getting on a virtual board and shredding a spot.
It's more than an interest. It's a love affair.

Vanoss and his friends were the cause of the resurgence back in 2014 when he started making content with his usual crew and I feel like it never truly died down. I’m sure plenty of people playing it nowadays still have memories of watching his videos 9 years ago.

After checking again, pewdiepie started releasing skate 3 videos in january 2014 and vanoss started releasing them one month later. I wouldn’t call this the second coming of the game. This is the third.

The thing holding it back is the inability to get off the board. Plus Skate 1 and 2 went for a more realistic physics model, making your skater feel extremely bulky like a real person, which is good or bad depending on what you want. Me personally, I like how you feel lighter in Skate 3, albeit still far heavier than Tony Hawk games.

@@SonicBoone56skate 1, 2, it (Wii version only), and 3 all have the same physics. the only differences is difficulty in skate 3 but that only mildly affects pop height and the distance which you can land and grind magnetism

I helped some Xbox 360 DLC archivers obtain and archive all the Skate 3 Dr. Pepper DLC a couple years ago. It was the only DLC for the game that the internet at the time hadn't had access to for JTAG consoles. I had left a comment on a very old RUclips video of someone showing the Dr. Pepper DLC off themselves mentioning I had it still, and the archivers got in touch with me about getting access to my hotmail account to download the DLC again and archive it for JTAG modders which they did successfully.

I came back to skating after a decade without, first i broke my foot so i had a hard time flipping the board as i normally could, then i fell on a motorbike during a race and broke my back. had to struggle for a decade to get back to skating, and only got back cause i gave my son a board and tried to pop it and did a kickflip first try after all that. so yeah been back for some years now, and maaaan its good to be back riding the streets and curbs and i was the youngest airwalk rider back in the day. the only 11 year old that was decked out in their gear hehe all thanks to Hawk and Glifberg

Skate 3 on the hardest mode is so far the most realistic skating video game I've played. I grew up playing THUG2 and american wasteland, discovering Skate 3 was amazing as it was a vastly superior game, the controls are intuitive and if you knew how to skate you could use the same logic to do the same tricks in the game without looking how to do them. A gem that's worth playing

Skate 3 came back into relevancy back in 2017-18 because PewDiePie started playing it on his channel. It's been coming back even more because within the last year and a half they announced a new EA skate game. I'm sure tiktok played a role, but it started coming back before that. I'd also argue that most fans of the series consider Skate 2 to be the best, not 3. I'd say Skate 3 is the best for playing with friends and making parks, but the city in Skate 2 is better looking and better to ride around and skate. It's annoying that the map in skate 3 is broken up into 3 sections. I love the whole series though, they're three of my of my favorite games of all time.

I still play skate 3 every now and then, but as a skater myself I highly highly recommend skate sim, if you skate irl you'll love skate sim. It is a bit of a challenge to get to know but not to hard tbh. Like for example one of the mechanics I love about skate sim is you use one joystick for one foot and the other for the other foot as in real skateboarding. on God 10/5 stars in my opinion, unlike skate 3 the physics are realistic so no big jumps that defy logic. My favorite trick to do in skate sim is the ghetto bird, yes you can ghetto bird, Casper, primo duuuude I am addicted to skate sim

Oh god, I remember this game got very popular about 10 years ago. But not because of the game being good or bad, but rather because of the insane glitchy physics. Don't get me wrong, the game was good, but it was plagued by glitches everywhere. Which were also surprisingly fun to exploit as well, when they didn't affect your gameplay. Too bad my PS3 died to the YLOD, but that's OK because I know it works on RPCS3 pretty well.
