This morning I decided to do a social media detox for this week because I realized I was buying more and left feeling wanting when I'm actually quite content. It's surprising how much it affects one's mood!

This right here! Every woman needs to know they are not alone in these ups and downs. Thank you for being vulnerable. We need this among each other more than anything. Our fulfillment is in Christ. God knew I needed to hear this today. 🥰

Social media is a dangerous trap. Knowing when to cut back and find contentment is so important. I too see all these "young" people building new homes, getting new furniture, acquiring all this "stuff". I am 64 and have found a way to be content after so many years of gathering "stuff" trying to be happy. My faith, time spent at mass, time at church, time with God has really taught me a new way of being content. Comparison is also very dangerous. I truly believe that Satan is wanting us to get caught in this trap. Thank you for sharing your real life and honest feelings. If only people could fast forward and look to their future life and realize all this gathering of "stuff" and materialism, consumerism, means nothing. I have learned that creating memories with simple experiences with family, grandchildren and friends is far more important than all the stuff I have that no one wants after I am gone. I am working on filling up my tank with nature, beauty, the moon and stars, flowers, grandchildren, good reads, purging of "stuff", donating, helping others, random acts of kindness. Those are the things that are bringing me peace and contentment. May God bless your family today and always!

Thank you for your honesty Margaret, its refreshing! Sometimes it seems like those who talk so much about being content and not comparing are constantly getting, doing and updating with no end in sight. While that isn’t necessarily wrong, it can feel confusing when people talk about ideas they don’t seem to be living in daily life. With a worldly perspective its so easy to feel “left behind” when we have so much right in front of us! I’m working on growing in contentment so that when I am confronted with someone who has “more” or “better” I can genuinely be happy for them in what they have and still feel fully secure in what God has given to me and who He has made me. That eternal perspective makes all the difference doesn’t it…I love this reminder to hold onto thankfulness!

Thanks for these encouraging and kind words, Erin. I just feel so much accountability here because of the words I am saying. It is so important to seek gratitude and contentment, to fight for it. But gosh I get weak and I feel that resistance too. I can't even show up with a smile when I know there's this looming battle being fought behind the screen. It's why I came to RUclips. I just felt like everything was dishonest and tricking my mind. It was a huge part of my transition to simpler living too. I refuse, as painful as it may be, to hide the real side of trying to live intentionally and in service to the Lord. We're the first generation to really walk through life with these distractions, social media, and clutter. All we can do is surrender it and follow the way of the Lord. This is NOT my last battle with this. Your words, I cherish them. Thank you for sharing your wisdom. Your words are inspiring too!

Hi Margaret, thank you for sharing your real and authentic self and your experiences. That kind of candor is beautiful. It is so true how discontentment and all other kinds of negativity can easily sneak in and take over, if we don’t take every thought captive and subject it to Christ.
One thing I wanted to mention for you to pray about is if you still practice yoga. There are deep spiritual ties between yoga and Hinduism, which cannot be separated, even with pure intentions. That can be an open door to the enemy to come in and wreak havoc. This is coming from a place of love and concern. I also used to practice yoga, but have stopped due to my convictions. I pray this finds you well and that we all would rest in the security and contentment of the Lord in all things 🙏🏼🤍

@@margaretmatheny I thought that I heard you mention it in a previous video. Maybe it was an old video. I’m glad to hear that you have heard about it. It’s wild how things like “Christian yoga” can be so sneaky for so many unsuspecting believers.
Thank you again for your video! It resonates a lot with me, especially while having discontentment and consumerism trying to rise up within me, taking my heart and mind away from the Lord, at times. Some days it’s easy to be content and other days, the battle is so real. I’d love to see more content like this that reveals your heart and desire towards contentment and intentional Godly living 🤍

They are a chance to learn and grow and that’s the whole reason we’re here on earth. I start every day by saying “Thank you Lord for this precious day. I surrender it to your will and accept whatever comes to me knowing it is the right thing for me at this time”. Hearing you talk about the ‘Lord’s Will’ just confirmed that I am on the right path. The constant war between my flesh and doing His will is all too real, especially in this digital age. Love this as someone who wants to create content I have had such a struggle with similar things. At one point a year ago I took a complete break from social media but as I wanted to have success and reach others I got back on. Last week I decided it’s time to let it go and get off of social media because it was giving me worldly desires and even just hyper focus on eating well, avoiding all the toxins, & etc. I was frazzled trying to do everything perfectly on top of trying to create content when I couldn’t even keep my laundry washed. All that to say I’m glad you’re sharing this side it’s easy to be discouraged by how well everyone manages their life so it’s nice to have a reminder that we all fall short and I’m glad you are giving glory to God through all of this, God bless you!

This is so true! I intentionally avoid social media and television because it gives me the “I wants” and discontent. Unplugged is the best yet how do you guard against this if you have to be on social media for work purposes? Sin always demands more and I find social media not only feeds the “I wants” but also tells me it will give me success if I feed it. It feels as if it’s a modern day requirement yet it’s soul draining.

Margaret, I’ve been searching for a kindred spirit! I am in the same place in life with two little ones and a homeschool mom. I also hit a dark place of discontentment recently and I can totally relate! At the end of the day the truth is “it’s just you and me, God.” And when I need a reset, I ask “how can I bring You joy in what I do today Heavenly Father?” I wish I could give you a hug and pray together and that our kids could play together. Sadly, I live in a place where I feel so disconnected from a spiritual community where my kids can grow up with like-minded friends. You are a beacon in this dark world. Thank you for your boldness in sharing a potentially unpopular message. May your heart sing the song God writes on it as you seek Him early in the morning.

Contentment is both easy and hard.
If we switch off from the world and read the Bible and pray it’s like this honey balm to my soul. But…if you (*I) have things you (*I) are (am) struggling with and you have children and you still have to ‘do stuff’ and you have trauma from being a child that sometimes feels like it’s choking the life out of you….it’s really, really hard.
I pray for God to free me from my worries. I pray for Him to comfort me.
I think before I starting living simply and more minimal that I was just blind to these issues.
Minimalism made me get to the core. The core has a lot of pain but it is SO worth going through it to get to the other side.
I want God given contentment because when more storms come then I will not be shaken.

As I’ve shared prior and the bible teaches on this so well in 1 Timothy chapter 6. Let’s stay in the word that uncovers the intentions of our heart, convicts, teaches, edifies, keeps us accountable & refines with the washing of the word 🧼🧽🧠💗 Praise God for the gift of The Holy Spirit! God bless you!

Margaret, I happened upon your channel last night, and I am impressed and encouraged! Your comments brought to mind a woman I learned of some years ago, and I feel sure you'd be encouraged by her: Elisabeth Elliot. She's old-school in the best way. She has a very unique life story you'll find on her website, and also on there is an amazing series on the Lord's Prayer. Thank you for sharing with us!

Amen, true contentment comes through a relationship with Jesus Christ.. When we seek Him, His Spirit of truth comes dwell in us reminding us to rest in Him. The world's story was written and those who knowing ending will see from the beginning. We own nothing or no one, rather everything is a gift and a lesson in His Book of life.

I agree and I don’t… I tell you why.. minimalism is hard because with time you start to have more time, and it becomes too much time that what we used to have that we don’t know what to do it with after a while, and we don’t use that time in a clever way so we start to fall into old habits to fulfill that time that we can’t manage anymore… in the other hand as well, you can still fall in the trap, as you said, even if you’re not practising minimalism… some people are so fed up of their caos in the house that they just delay their chores and they waste their time and days of their life on social media… now the problem here is… us.
We are the problem… we should educated ourselves and souls to take control of our time, the same way we have control of anything else that is ours… I know that this world is not designed to be comfortable all the time, and we are not angles but simply human been but, I believe that time will tell us what to do… with social media we tent to copy each other quite a lot and try to be in other peoples situation, when really we should start to invest some more time with ourselves and see what suit us! Before social media we use to be so different and proud to be so, now we pretty much look all the same and want all the same thing🤣🤣

Beautiful to see such expressions from you. It’s super hard not to get distracted by the worlds definition of success.
I’m curious, have you considered additional things that could be affecting your mood is the changing of light in USA as you creep through autumn, and where your menstrual cycle is at? I find these things effect my mood a lot too.

I haven't watched all of your videos on minimalism but from what I've seen, you inspire me!

Margaret, I am in my 60s, and I can safely say that LIFE is about recommitting ourselves moment by moment, minute by minute, day by day, year by year to Our Lord and His Purpose and His Plan for our lives.
Every day, Satan tries to lay the foundation in our hearts upon which to build a case against God in order to rob us of our inheritance. Every day we must come to the Lord and ask Him to break down those lies and to fill us with His Spirit and His True Truth.
No matter how long we walk with the Lord, we must continue to "abide in Him"...our Vine...we are "the branches" or we will be without what is necessary to our life and living.
Truly, we must not be surprised when WE come up EMPTY when we shift our gaze from Him for even a moment. He is more important than our heartbeat, surely our soul suffers as our body suffers should our heart skip a beat or stop altogether.
Take courage, Dear Sister! These are signs that Our Precious Holy Spirit is living in and moving in our hearts and lives to give us these trials of our faith and the victories as we recommit our whole selves to Our Lord God.
My heart and prayers are with you, Dear Sister.

I love this, and while I see this as something about minimalism, I see it primarily as the downfalls of living in a capitalist society.
