Can't praise you enough for giving a thoroughly proper review, great content and very fair negative observations. I know its not in the same league as the d3 but i have an e92 330d coupe and im sure the engine noise is better even in that than the d3. I love that sound, beefy is the only way i could describe it. Maybe the folks at alpina have just swayed a bit too far to the refined side for some people. You're also absolutely right about bmw 6pot diesels... If you haven't driven one, go do it asap. Its an eye opener. The only thing you really missed is performance at motorway speeds. Ya know... 70..ish. I imagine its like havin a redstone rocket up your arse. Man i need that car in my life. Cheers
Thanks for the video. If you had 50 grand, would you put 40 on a f31 b3 (with b58 / 441hp) or 30 grand in a d3 ? I'am struggling to find the balance here, looking at this video is like this car does everything, but is it even close to the feeling you have in your b4s video reving it up ? I currently have an 130i, i fear to ve disappointed loosing the l6 petrol sound (but in the mean time i run it with ethanol, which would not be nice to do with an alpina i guess)
Great review Joe. Loving your work. Just to point out that the gear shift paddles are an option (which agree with you as a preference). You still get the little 'nipple' buttons behind the wheel as standard. Used to have one of the original D3, albeit the 2.0d back in 2008 and loved how it revved so freely up to the limiter for a diesel. Would love to get back into a D3 touring in the near future or maybe a D5. Driving a 530d touring at the moment (great car with loads of options) but miss the special exclusive Alpina extras.
Proper content and some nicely insightful comments....which I share...notably the plasticky feel of the F31 interiors. I've had an E92 335d from new since 2006 and I've a theory that the whole car industry de-contented their products post-Lehmann to squeeze out a bit more profit in these Hard Times. The plastics throughout the cabin in the E90 series are just lusher and, of course, costlier to execute. Nonetheless, what a piece of kit. I had one for the day - an Allrad D3 in Alpina Green - when we visited the factory in Buchloe last year (I was having my Z4 checked out at the time) and all the pros and cons which you mentioned are spot-on (with very little pros I hasten to add !). It'd be nice to know what you've found out from Alpina about 'interior enhancements' for those stand-out bits of 'boggo' trim .....?
Hello Joe enjoyed your video and agree your comments about two cars for £100. Had a 981 Cayman S and now have an F11 535d Touring; drove the D3 but the 5 has a bigger boot which I need; 3-series Touring a bit shallow which is why I went for it. Will downsize in future and now that Caymans are a turbo 4 will get next generation D3 or even B3 Touring.
Hi Joe! Alpina... I suspect that this car is one of your favourites ever (if not the favourite...)!!! Did you have any problems with speedbumps? Cheers!!!
I was seriously impressed with the ride in the Alpina. A diesel that gets to 60 in just over 4 seconds is outstanding. If I had 60k to throw at a car it would definitely be in the garage. Thank you Joe for the meet at the Ace cafe to have a look at the car. What's up next at the Ace cafe?
Thanks for the D3 videos Joe, there are not many decent independent reviews of this car online. I took a lot of inspiration from your thoughts when configuring my D3 Touring (due December) - LSD of course, Pro Nav, Sunroof, HK Sound, etc. I even went for the paddles and alcantara wheel :o) Thanks again!
My pleasure, I absolutely LOVED that D3! So glad you ticked the LSD, I've since driven a D4 Coupe and Cab without the LSD, still brilliant/very capable cars, but the LSD turns the car into a genuine M car competitor when you want it to be :-) Very jealous, enjoy!
I watched the D4 Coupe/Cab video this morning and wondered if either had the LSD optioned...they looked a little less fun round the corners than they could have been! Keep up the good work bud.
Don't feel bad about pointing out a cars week spots as your right....every car has them. Gutted I missed out in a ride along at the Ace Cafe. If you want to do an M135i adaptive suspension comparison, let me know as mine does not have that option. Looking at the roads in your vids, your very local to me too.
Thanks for the offer buddy, I will keep that in mind... My buddy has his available too but I just don't have the time at the moment 🙁 Hopefully meet you and the 1 soon...
Alpinas are fantastic cars; the only BMWs I like and... .just realised it is less than my target vehicle a (don't laugh) a VW California Ocean with a few options....
I can also confirm people come and chat with you. ALPINA AttractS real positive VIBES. OOZING CLASS.
First time I’ve seen this to the end and yes,
Cayman gts and d3biturbo is my dream garage too. 👌
I have the B3 Biturbo Touring... try that one day ;-) The suspension is amazing, however, the car is SO low I have to go over speedbumps sideways.

Not sure if it's an Alpina touch but I love that contrasting dash stitching.

+Nuno Lourenço Yeah man I love Alpina's, hopefully I will own one soon... They're absolutely fine over speed bumps 👌
Another nice video Joe. Was in Chandlers over the weekend and checked out the 7 series LWB you drive, nice office! :)

Cheers Dave, you will feature in my final D3 when I finally get round to editing... Hope you're well fella!

Great review, Joe! An honest, fair review by a chill, likeable dude.
P.S. I would avoid Comic Sans :)
That's some sick skill at the intro, it's like you were trying to do a doughnut but the exit out!
Give us a step by step how to for sick trick when turning out.
Haha cheers man, the car with LSD makes it so easy.... 👍
Good day is it at all possible to get this d3 touring in manual as I don't drive auto's pls assist cheers
Can I ask how would a 335d x drive m sport compare to the alpina in your opinion?
Great video man!
hi Joe, great videos ! how does the tire noise on coarse roads compare regular 3 series?
Thanks! I would say the road noise/tyre roar is the same as a M sport 3 series with the optional 19" wheels. Cheers Joe
10:18 nice private land mate ;)
BMW Alpina alpinas are Great!
Alpinas are fantastic cars; the only BMWs I like and... .just realised it is less than my target vehicle a (don't laugh) a VW California Ocean with a few options....
Best car,, no one knows about,, love my d3 biturbo
Did you have the chance to compare with b3 ?
Does everyone where a Canada goose jacket where u live...
does it have rear LSD?
Front.
is there any way to upgrade that cheap parts ?
Yes apparently Alpina are soon going to have the option to trim those plastics bits 👍
Joe Achilles this interior with those upgrades must be incredible. And why alpina gave the car to you for 6days?
What is that vent display thing at 8:56?
Alpina extra tech
I think bmw M has lost its way in the last few years compared to AMG so Alpina should make some inroads.
