    Alpina D3 is just better than a standard 3.30d or 3.35d period. Alpina positions itself so well in a place where there is comfort, sportiness and exclusivity. It does not rival with M cars, doesn't need to. It is a brand for people who want to experience something different. Just love the brand, great video mate 👍

    Classy car. Isn't the Alpina wheel design, not only iconic, but still the most classy wheel out there? I do like the alpina side graphics too. Great vid (as always) Joe!

    I'm just back from the spa 24h with my d3 touring and used it as my mobile home for the weekend. You can go to spa in almost no time via Autobahn, dust an awful lot of quite serious cars and sleep in the back (if your mid size and do not give a shit haha). 33mpg combined! No camper could ever do that :D great review by the way!

    As a D3 biturbo owner I agree it’s is the best all round car you could own. I love the fact that a lot of people don’t know what it is but those who do really appreciate. Then how it covers ground so effortlessly, then flick into sport and manual and wow on uk roads there aren’t many cars that would stick with it.

  • @icetonky

    Great review, as it really shows Alpina for what they are - detail, finesse, taking an already great car and making it even better. A true enthusiasts car, a drivers car, for someone who appreciates it but doesn't feel the need to shout "heyyy, look at me".

  • @hybrid365
    @hybrid365 7 лет назад +3

    I do agree with the most things you said in the video except the issue with the running costs. The most expensive thing on almost every (new) car is the depreciation. Fuel costs are nothing against that especially if you drive a usual 10-15 thousand miles a year! If you look on the used car market (i.e. In Germany) Alpina cars do not hold their value very good or even better than regular BMW cars. Sometimes its very hard to sell a used alpina because there is very little demand for that (a lot of potentiel buyers even do not know alpina). Under that perspective you really have to thing about a diesel Car or a alpina twice unless you drive really a lot of miles per year.

    • @JoeAchilles1
      @JoeAchilles1  7 лет назад +2

      You have a valid point, guess I got a bit carried away! I just meant the D3 is far cheaper to run (fuel/servicing) than a M car, AMG etc...

    Genuinely a great video Joe and so informative too, as are most of your vlogs.
    I was not overly aware of the Alpina brand and the work they do to a base BMW but since watching this and your earlier vlogs on the B7 and the interview with Andreas Bovensiepen I will definitely be considering and test driving an Alpina (I currently drive an M4) when it's time to change. Keep up the great work!

    • @JoeAchilles1
      @JoeAchilles1  7 лет назад

      Cheers Stuart! Thanks for taking time to watch my stuff :-) As you know I'm a massive BMW fan, especially their M lites and full M cars like your M4. But ALPINA really do make some incredible alternatives, Nottingham will have a B4 S demo car available later this month, if you get a chance ask them for the keys for a proper test drive :-)

    Joe great video mate as always. I would have a D3 touring in a heartbeat but the reason you see hardly any on the roads is the PCP deals on them are dreadful compared to what BMW offer. You can buy a fully loaded 335d touring and pay far less per month with the same running costs if not better than a D3.
    I could afford a £50k 530d xdrive touring but not a £50k D3 touring it's a simple as that Joe. Alpina need to offer better deals to entice punters into the brand. That said I still love Alpina . 👍🏼👍🏼❤️

    Great video Joe. I own a diesel Audi and mainly use the car for short trips. As a result, the DPF light comes on every month or so and then I usually have to take the car for an unwanted drive on a dual carriageway to clear it out. I'm wondering, do modern diesels have the same problem if used for short trips/in town? It looks like a great car and would love to have this as my next car.

    • @JoeAchilles1
      @JoeAchilles1  7 лет назад

      Hey David, firstly thanks & glad you ended the video. Mate in many recent years of driving modern diesels I've never experienced that issue, these latest direct injection 6 pots are incredible, truly works of art. Get yourself a test drive :-)

    It may be just my opinion, but I believe all people that say it's a £50k three series have never been out for a proper ride in one. Really amazing cars in the sense they seem to have captured the soul of automobile building of old and I don't find that in any other sub £300k car... so it sums up as a bargain at £60k😃😃

    • @JoeAchilles1
      @JoeAchilles1  7 лет назад +1

    Do you reckon that Alpina could create a product a bit similar to what mountune do with Ford, like adding the remap/exhaust and keeping the warranty perhaps? Would be shame to not do the full suspension works etc but we'd maybe see a few more alpinas on the road!

    • @JoeAchilles1

    Hey @Joe Achilles, or anyone else who might be in the know. I've got a question:
    I know 3 series is much noisier in the cabin, compared to the 5er. Do you know if there's any difference in cabin noise between regular bmw 3 series and an Alpina D3? Did Alpina do something to make it any quieter inside? Especially in higher speeds. Appreciate in advance..

    Thanks, Joe. I keep looking over at Alpina alternatives from my F32 430D RWD. The main draw is your description of the cushier-yet-sportier suspension setup. I don't know what this wizardry is, but a quick question: how do those 20s hit against bigger potholes, and does that translate over to your back/backside?
    (For comparison sake, my 19s certainly smash against bigger potholes and you hear the loud thud of the alloy, but perhaps it's the M Adaptive susp. that helps against it transferring to the seats and subsequently your back.)
    Thanks!

    • @JoeAchilles1
      @JoeAchilles1  7 лет назад +1

      Cheers man! Yeah one of these on 20" (like this one) is unbelievable, they do occasionally crash over bigger potholes, the 19" are the ones to go for if you don't might the slight visual disadvantage. Cheers

    • @wellsyandcars
      @wellsyandcars 5 лет назад

      Hi, my D3 biturbo is on 19” with 35 profile tyres. Honestly yes it does crash through major pot holes but don’t most cars, it does stiffen up when your pushing it, but honestly the more you push the better it gets. Then drop it back into D sit back and enjoy 50mpg and a smooth ride. I did a long steady run in mine a few weeks ago and was getting 65mpg on the Motorway

    Joe what are your thought on the m340i? I personally feel like the d3 is a better package much lower revving 50mpg against 40mpg in the real world the d3 is faster and they are around the same money. If it was your money which one would you go for?

    • @JoeAchilles1
      @JoeAchilles1  7 лет назад

      The M340i is still a couple of years away. Compared to the 340i I would take the D3 mostly due to the far superior ride and handling. Saying that the 340i is amazing value and works out a fair bit cheaper on finance. Cheers

    Car is beautiful, but best BMW cars finished on E series. I have alpina F31 and i'm not satisfied. In my opinion the problem is with the steering gear.
    There is no information transferred from front tires to the steering wheel.
    The car is well balanced but you can't feel it at all.
    It is a pity that alpina has not removed this problem that occurs in all BMWs of the F and G series. There is also a problem when the steering wheel is in the 0-degree position, there is no resistance at low speeds. In sport mode it's better, but it does not even little bit similar with a perfect layout with e91 LCI.
    After 15 years with BMW I have to look for another car. It is a pity because the alpina is beautiful inside and outside.

      you are Lucky ! Almost 90% of D3´s in Germany are AWD ! I am really thinking of changing my 335D to a D3 but i am really not a fan of AWD ! Thanks for your fast answer and the really great video anyway

    Why would you buy an SUV over the German performance estate? The inside is typically no bigger, nor is boot space, and let's be honest most SUV owners never take their cars off road. The performance estate is also lighter, faster, better looking and infinitely more civil.

    I love these but why on earth do Alpina think its a good idea to remove the paddles... That's a deal breaker for me!

    • @JoeAchilles1
      @JoeAchilles1  7 лет назад +3

      You can order any new ALPINA with paddles, they basically supply you the car with a standard BMW wheel. Watch my interview video to hear the history behind the buttons, it is an interesting story. Saying that paddles are still my preference too!

      You can specify paddles as a no cost option (I did)

    Meh. Fuel is cheap. Biggest expense is depreciation.
