I spent 10 years as a chef, did my 3 year apprenticeship and everything. But there’s nothing better than a nice meal cooked over an open fire, surrounded by your friends and family. That’s the best food in the whole world, and I’d choose that every single time
Using metal on cast iron is fine, as long as you don’t scrape hard with it. And as you said, season the pan using hot water (no soap), a soft cloth out of an old T-shirt. Finish with a bit of oil of your choice. Your meal looks great, I can almost smell it.
Only been watching your videos for about a year but it feels like we're old friends. You both are naturals or at least you guys make it look easy. 💯 Got my first order of cigars today now I go to figure out how to properly partake....🤠
I met the owner and others at the Sheridan cigar lounge, just a great group of people with great cigars and my pipe. I’m sad my son has moved to Cheyenne for work was hoping on meet you one day in the cigar lounge and buy u a cigar. Great videos keep them coming.🤓👍
Something about cooking outdoors on an open fire makes everything taste more delicious. The sound of the creek next to the fire is the icing on the cake; like nature’s own background music. Bom apetite.
Dwayne got himself a winner there didn't he!? I love this channel and to Mr and Ms Dry creek wrangler school I wish them the best of luck! Dwayne sir and Ms Dwayne God bless you and yours.
Great video. Thanks! We cook over a fire a lot during the summer, sometimes grilling and sometimes with a black pot or skillet. I think one thing people don't know because of all the hype over cast iron is that you just cook in it like you would any other pot. And you can use any recipe - no need for special cast iron recipes. If you like it when you cook it at home, you'll like it cooked in a black pot over a fire. Nothing special needed. The hype needs to go away. Thanks for showing a simple recipe that shows exactly that. Nicely done.
Excellent video! I'm a 53 year old bachelor that grew up on a dairy farm with 4 brothers. Momma wouldn't let us in the kitchen; for good reason. I don't like cooking and I ain't much at it, so any tips on the simple stuff are great. I live off grid so my menu is limited up here on the hill. Plus, I like to keep it simple. Preciate the video.
You ABSOLUTELY can use metal in cast iron. I have some skillets that are over 100 years old. Stainless steel can't hurt cast iron. The only thing that hurts cast iron is not drying it properly
I love my cast iron. I cook with it more than 90% of the time. I used to use my grandma's old early 1960's big skillet for stir fry but I just got a lodge wok and so I use that baby often. my grandma's old skillet has the smooth finish. no name only size 12 1/2" I believe and USA . love that skillet 😊. Thanks for the video, I enjoyed it.
Man guys I love y’all videos! Love y’all’s relationship and how you both explain and do things together! A lot of respect for one another! Please keep the cigar vids coming too!
Because of you all we are taking our 2 teens on a camping vacation. No cabin, just a tent and fire. That being said, I'm still pretty nervous about cooking over the fire but this is helping. Thank you!
one of my favorite things to cook over the fire are fish parcels . Usually basa fish, julienned veggies like carrots and green onion, soy sauce, ginger and garlic etc, folded into aluminum foil into a parcel (make sure the sauce can’t leak out), and they cook fast on the fire grill. really easy, you just have to practice knowing when they are done but it’s so moist they can’t dry out yum. I serve over white rice
Me too. I use tilapia usually if we don't go fishing. Butter garlic Badia squeeze of lemon. 3 1/2 minutes each side and done. Serve over rice. So good.
Cast iron cooking on a campfire is one of my very favorite things to do. The food is always good (little hint of smoke!) and being in God’s beautiful creation of the great outdoors always makes the experience that much better. The meal looked delicious and your clean up was exactly as I use as well. Thank you for bringing us along!
Thanks for letting Momma take the lead on one Duane. I've been a camp cook on and off for years and what a lot of folks don't seem to get with cast iron is having it hot enough before ya toss anything into it. Seen it too many times to count..
Your meal was simple and looked delicious. Have used cast iron for many years and use a nylon ( synthetic ) spatula . Thank you so much for the cleaning tip, did not know that. Much respect to both of you .
I really enjoy these campfire cooking videos. It’s so great being able to see someone make an excellent meal by cooking over a bed of coals. Whenever I make stir fry at home I always use left over cooked rice from a previous meal. Cold leftover rice works so much better for stir fry than using a hot freshly made batch of rice. Anyways, I think it’s so important for people to learn how to cook on a campfire. It’s a great skill to have and it’s always impressive when you can dazzle some of your camping buddies by cooking real food over a real fire. Thank you so much for sharing and I look forward to seeing more of your videos! Take care!
Been cooking with cast iron over 50 years using metal spatulas. Wasn’t just till last few years I heard I shouldn’t be doing that. Oh well, do what works best for you is right. This video made me hungry. Great job!
I am from Texas my grandmother used only cast iron it was the best healthy pan u can use .it is good to use a metal spatula it's part of the smoothing in that pan. The more you use it the better it gets. Yhee haw. Cowboy john norco California horse Town USA 🇺🇸
That's a great looking couple right there. God bless you both nothing more valuable than the commitment between a good man and a good woman. Sure is hard to find that now days.
I'd keep an eye on that guy in the cowboy hat there young lady. Look's kinda shady to me. :-) Great video! Sometimes people are afraid to try things unless they have been shown how first. Your video does a great job from start to finish! Nothing like cast iron on a campfire! Look forward to more!!!
Love the video and thank you for the cast iron care comments, I’ve been looking for those ideas for a while and agree that cast iron is the best way to cook over a fire and just love how you explained how to take care of your pan
Very good cooking! I cook the same way, it doesn’t need to be fancy. I learned from my grandmother, if you season cast iron with beef or venison tallow, it will last longer. Thank you for the videos.
I have been using cast iron skillets for over forty years. A couple were my mothers, but most others I bought or found in used condition. I have only bought one new skillet in all that time and that was a 6.5" that fits my saddle bags. I prefer using a metal spatula, or wood, when cooking for all the reasons you mentioned, even when cleaning them. Other than the initial curing, I do exactly as you, olive oil in a warm pan. Enjoy the meal.
This looks delicious great job on explaining everything so well & how to clean & season the cast iron skillet afterwards. You're doing an excellent job! Thank you for sharing your life experiences with us. You're one of the good ones & Dewayne is lucky to have you. Keep up the good work. God bless you & yours.
I've used cast iron ever since my mom and dad would let me help with it. My dad used a Dutch oven -- what he calls a bake oven -- and my mom has cast iron skillets from before I was born. I'm 43 now. I was brought up using metal spatulas and spoons in the cast iron. I've never had an issue with the seasoning coming out. Of course, I don't scrape hard with my tools either. Maybe that's why I don't have issues with my seasoning.
If a lot of people say not to use metal on their cast iron, that is just fine. But on my cast iron i have used only metal utensils for decades. In truth it is my believe that most folks don't actually know crap about what they are talking about, but rather simply believe bologna that they hear from someone else that doesn't know crap about what they are talking about. I live by different rules i guess, I live by personal experience. I pretty much don't believe a darn thing that anyone says. I'm completely an experience guy. I live by what I know not by what i think. Its a darned nice way to live to be sure. And the very best thing that I have ever learned is how little I know.
The youtube algorithm hasn't been floating your videos up to me and I am glad I looked for new videos, got to sit down with an hour or so of different DCWS videos!
I cook by fire more than I use my stove. My personal favorites are Baby Back Ribs & Fish. (Not together) I do it the lazy way and make a aluminium foil purse for the fish with butter garlic a little lemon juice and some Badia.
Wor-ces-ter-shire sauce 😅, (better than most of Kent Rollins attempts 😉) Wild camper from England (U.K) here, this was fantastic to watch, one of the challenges outdoors is cooking a decent meal, usually having to swap things round as you're cooking, being able to do a one pan/pot meal helps massively, this has given me quite a few ideas, thank you. Oh and over here we pronounce the "Shire" as "Sher" on the Counties that end in "Shire". My county is Cheshire so pronounced "Chesher". And Worcester is oddly pronounced as "Wuster". I did say it was odd. So the sauce is pronounced "Wustersher Sauce". Or, just "Wuster Sauce". Hope this helps. Thank you for the video 'Momma'. Take care the pair of you, you're both wonderful and inspiring and I only wish I could've found the channel sooner, so going through the back catalogue. Wishing you both all the best Dave & Buddy* 👍 (*the doggo)
Fantastical mama, chicken and broccoli stir fry over the campfire! I like using butter for cooking a lot also, the last three or four years I have been clarifying it and putting it in pint jars, you remove the milk solids that burn, it's good for over a month without refrigeration and you can actually use it for deep frying, fried Chicken fried in butter ❤️. If you want to use metal on your cast iron use metal on your cast iron every time you cook with it you reseason it. I have a little 12 inch carbon steel wok I have started cooking with on the campfire and it has become my favorite (🤫 I use metal spatulas on it also)🤣 I want to thank you both for this channel, listening to the wisdom from DeWayne these past few days has been refreshing. Thanks again
That honestly looks better than a more complex asian stirfry that I made today with all the ingredients for the sauce and so many vegetables. Simple is just easy and healthy too and I forget that sometimes.
Still too muddy up here to get the fire going in the yard, but at least I could spend some time out on the porch with a good cigar watching the sun go down. Thanks for the videos.
2 suggestions; 1add your garlic when food is almost done, it comes out sweeter. 2 my German Mum RIP always used metal utensils & always used soap/water to clean cast iron. She taught me to dry it on heat, re-grease it & while it’s still smoking hot to put salt in & rub it in/ paper bag, this makes it like a non stick pan. Also grease inside & outside of cast iron but only use the salt on the inside & always turn it upside down❣️✌️🍀🙏💗♾Maine, USA 🇺🇸 p.s. I 💗both of your channels❣️🤗💋&🙏from 🐺🦉🦝

Thank you. I appreciate the simplicity. It's simple but so important.
I am currently working through your content and learning so much. I do have to say though, it is really awesome to finally see more of Mama.

how'd the trip go?
I really enjoyed this! You did a great job explaining how to cook this meal over the coals!
Thank you - I would like to watch more of your campfire cooking! 🤠
Good info on the butter & coconut oil to keep from burning on a hot pan. Thanks great tip 👍👍
I agree about the metal spatula, I use one and if you don’t go digging and scraping you won’t have any problems.
Enjoyed watching Momma cook and learned a bit about cast iron. Thanks!
Good video. I like the clean up and re-season portion at the end. People don’t always show that.

I use metal on my cast iron all the time; no problem
We were back in the sticks and didn't know what plastic was,, we always used wood and metal utensils
Glad to see useful campfire cooking skills. I hope others who have never been around in the wilds will learn something.

Love it!! My only suggestion is to dump spices into your hand first because the steam clumps up the seasoning in the bottle
Love your style..thank you for all the great video’s.
I loved the comment on "feedin the birds"
I do a lot of that too!
Really enjoy these videos. 👍
