- Inside the Luthier's Shop with BigDGuitars.com. Here is the lacewood top that I reviewed a while back, this time I am doing an orange blackburst on something other than maple. Using natural colors I really get this top to pop.
ABSOLUTELY STUNNING DEREK!Shows you the knowledge you have, accentuating the colors you already have within the wood and literally blend them to compliment each other!
One of my favorites of your color demos!
Nice job BigD! This turned out very nice! Thanks for the vid BigD!
That really is outstanding! Such a big difference with the last round of orange stain!
You do really nice work and I've learned a lot from your tutorials......thank you Sir keep them coming : )
best vid on the subject I've seen
I know these are old but really enjoying seeing these while I'm working on speccing a custom 6 string. This one is KILLER
NICE!
I have a piece of Lacewood and a piece of Leopardwood in my inventory, which I originally thought of using in a few multi-laminate next, but the more research I did the more I was leaning towards other uses. This video definitely has the gears turning!
Damn, that's beautiful!!!
Turned out beautiful! :)
Fantastic. I guess I need to find something with a lacewood top!
That is beautiful!
beautiful work sir!
That is a super color combination!
thanks!
✨beautiful✨
that wood grain remains me of something.
Absolutely Gorgeous Piece of Guitar Art!!! Do you happen to have a pic of the final product?
BEAUTIFUL
Awesome,doing mine,love it
God that’s gorgeous.
Looks Great!!
Beautiful
You make it look so easy 😜
What do you mix the stew mac tints with to apply them to the body?
outstanding!
wow, that looks sharp !! =)
Just curious. I love these finishes that you're doing. I'm wondering about woods that need to be grain filled, like mahogany. Would you grain fill first and just make sure all but the grain was bare, or would you fill after, maybe after a coat of sealer? I've just grain filled a tele body I made that's mahogany, and I tinted the grain filler (Timbermate) sort of a dark walnut with Keda dye. I had originally sealed before the filling with shellac sanding sealer, but I think I'm probably down to bare wood again. Thanks!
I love the orange top with the black highlights in the grain. But I would prefer to do the whole guitar that way.
Please do a video on spraying the finish! :)
Hey! what would you recommend for a knotty pine tele?
Would you recommend doing black burst on mahogany? Without adding another color, just from the natural mahogany to black. How should I make the transition?
Super work! Can Tru oil be used to refinish a stained body?
Amazing.
What clear coat finishes will work over lacquer sanding sealer?
Damn that looks good.
We call this timber Silky Oak in Australia. Its a great timber for guitar building.
That grain is maaaaad!!!
Would the black burst work on bare wood (so no colour?)
Do you have a video how to satin the basswood natural??
Badass, I've been staining wood and leather for the last month and and half, I just can't get it as good as I want
Do u have a video on the sanding beforehand?
Did you sand the first black cost while it was still wet?
Can you do this on maple?
You said you use tru oil to finish it up. How many coats total? Also do you wetsand at the end and then apply polish for the mirror look?
Please xhat profuct du you use ?
I would like to do the same @
Im pretty sure Im going to this. What did you use for the initial coat of black stain? Thanks!
hello, I wanted to ask, what kind of ink you are using, or believe them, if any do you? thank you
Boa noite.Posso passar óleo de linhaça e quando secar não atrapalha aplicação do PU?
Nice very Neat .what ColOring materials you've Used?
looks like a flaming tiger....good job
Wow, that's beautiful. Anyone else see a pair of wings from the grain?
Hi, I love this guitar. Have ordered a body to have a go at this Orange Blackburst finish but couldn't get Lacewood. I ended up with Koa. Any advice on this would be appreciated. Do you think Koa would take the dye in a similar way?
Thank for your great videos.
I know your question is old but I hope you didn’t dye it. Koa is naturally pretty, and rare.
ihave some lacewood a big billet block. iwant to make a thick middle stripe in the laminated neck and use Honduran mahogany outer strips not as big, its an 8 string neck through. and want top and back to be lacewood also and color it all except the mahogany outer strips! insane isn't it?
Hi,
I am from Brazil. I saw your video about Tru Oil finish. It's so good!
I am trying to do it in my tele guitar body and neck, but I have troubles.
After more than 15 coats, when I am sanding with 2500 (water sand), some spots appears. So I have to make a new coat. And It never ends.
Do you know what could be happening?
What is the polish method to use on this case?
Thank you so so much,
Mauro
Did you say BRAZILIAN Wax?
Me too, same problem...
You missed to opportunity to turn that middle peace into an eye. That would look wicked, like the guitar is looking back at whoever is looking at it. I would have bought that
At least it wouldn't look like a vagina after that.
right at the bottom left & right you gooped it & left it ??? EWE
Black Smudge. x2
+BigDGuitars This looks very nice but I want to know what lacquer you use after you apply the sanding sealer please.
I have painted guitars in the past using automotive 2k lacquer as I used to be an automotive refininsher. Do you use a different type of lacquer such as nitrocellulose? I have spraying equipment (gun, compressor etc.) but want to try something different with my new Strat project (Ash body), I'm going to have a go at using black and orange wood dyes like in this video but I want to use the most appropriate lacquer. I would really appreciate your help. Thanks.
I have used 2k on bodies. Nitro is kinda a bitch at times. Don't use deft you can buy real nitro from belhen on Amazon. Or you can get it from Mohawk. 2k is fine if you are used to it keep using it.
+BigDGuitars - Thanks man. What other lacquer can I use other than nitro or 2k? What do you use the most?
What in the beginning say?
Ok , so i'm not the only one who see's it then ... brings a new meaning to " guitar porn " ! lol
I've enjoyed your videos, thanks for posting. Personal opinion, I liked it better at 3:00. Still an awesome looking guitar.
Agreed
what kind of paint did.you use?
Dye. Not paint
Great vids thx for all the postings. My wife Nancy used to work w your neighbor Ellen here in Maryland, before they moved. Anyway...have u ever tried using the Preval sprayer (Lowes/Home depot) to apply the stain?? They work great for getting a real nice fade b/c they atomize the stain so well. Another advantage of spraying is that u can keep the colors separate. The first/base color doesnt bleed back out as u apply a different color like it does w a rag.
I haven't used them to spray stain thats an interesting approach, they should work pretty good. I know they spit sometimes when I have used them with thicker product, so I don't use them unless I am trying to touch up something. I have a bunch of them sitting in the basement, sounds like I should try it again.
Ellen & J are the best!!!!!
Superb job ,like the cola color .How many guitar bodies / necks /whole guitars do you make a year ? Keep them movies coming , How's the swirling going could you make an ultimate swirling video with your conclusions from all your swirling tests ? whats the best way and products to use ? how to prevent blotching ,how much borax in the water ,etc....i'm sure it would be highly appreciated.
Neil
check out my other vids I have a ton of better swirls than just the tests.
Man you do great work 👌 Could you send me a link for your shop Thanks Man 👍OK got the link at the end ☺️
“Actually looks like Koa.” I was thinking that exact thing during the whole video. Hey, he’s making Koa from Lacewood. Lol. Beautiful though. Nice job.
It looks like something, but the word KOA didn't come to mind.
i actually have a "imbuia top" (some call brazilian wallnut) and i want it looks lighter and amber like koa. I thinking to start with some bleach and after try this technique, but using a little more orange/yellow. Any hint ?
Matheus Giotto no

Dang. If my hands could move that fast I'd never need an Orbital Sanders.
If you would have flipped the top sides so that the flexed part would be opposite horizontilly from left would have been cool too!
Will a burled ash laminate top work for this? +BigGGuitars
if its a real piece of wood yes, meaning not veneer. Veneer the glue might seep through.
3:07 I think this looked the best.
The grain, she look like sleeve of wizard, yez, is nice.
wouldn't it be easier and cleaner with an aerograf ?
Do you make the bodies?
I do make bodies take a look:

That guitar is a scarecrow!
Where do you get your TransTint's from?
wood workers supply or woodcraft. I should start selling them....
***** You should absolutely start selling them. If you could get them to Canada without gouging the way stewmac does I bet I could generate a bit of interest.
3:00 yooooo this guitar needa chill...😳
The grain looks like an eye.
Now it can be Grabbed
I'AM REALY whant know painting guitar with doubal couthing how to how to make over myself my guitar
1:56 ohhhh my teeth just experienced a jump scare.
3:06 man.... leave that as is and ONLY put the light 1" fade around the edge and don't smear it deep into the thing. man... that would have left that orange POPPIN'. Putting so much black on the horns just kills the orange in those spots. That's why I would like to see only a narrow fade at the edge so those horns have more color. Oh well, prob just me.
Just surfing guitar vids. Pay me no mind.
7:00 ah, I had not watched that yet so I see you added more orange. I was also saying NOOOOO. don't kill the orange! Me needs more color. nice job.
Wasn't expecting to find you here, have a reply kind sir!
howdy. :)
WOw this is great advice here. It's amazing how beautiful a project comes out when you put in some elbow grease. I love how tung oil doesn't leave dust nibs and hairs in your finish like poly does. It's also a bonus that the finished wood just begs to be caressed like a $3000 gun stock or a Taylor guitar. I've been using this tung oil that is made with orange peels, smells awesome! orangetungoil.com
Wow. is it for sale? ^^
soon. Going to put a few coats of tru-oil on next
***** would it be possible to order a rosewood neck with matching reverse headstock, and do you ship to Europe? Love your work.
Vagina-caster lol all kidding aside that really pops out at you. Some beautiful work in bringing out the grain and very helpful to guys like me also.
Thank you BigD
...NICE : Sometimes, you have to quit while your ahead...
I would have used a polyurethane wipe on varnish for a smoother finish, then wax buff for a perfect lustre
First of all, thanks for share the video and knowledge... Said that, let me say that the last step (finish) ruined this beautiful job :(
3:15 color
looks like black stain with orange dye, then black dye
FABNA ABNA
Why do people use minwax on beautiful guitars? General Finishes or home made without all the crap fillers is so much better.
FABANA FABNA
Like you work, but this particular example certainly isn't your best. You should post the finished product.
FABNA FABNA
Gg
FABNA. FABNA
That's a porn :P :P :P
Came here because I am just planning to do the same. Unluckly my guitar does not have that nice vagina grain
Definitely a woman’s guitar !
Yoni
なんか卑猥な仕上がりになっちゃったね
looks like crap to me .especially the sealer , was all dimpled, uneven ,not flat/smooth
