Proud to be working with the Tynesider and all the other fantastic organisations in Gateshead Town Centre. We're trying our hardest to bring that vibrancy back to the High Street and supporting our local community the best we can. 💚
You can tell Lee and Louisa are genuinely trying their best to do their bit to bring some joy to the area they care about so much ,good on the pair of you and I wish you a lot of success , thanks for another great video Eddie
Another great report Eddie I go to Gateshead once a week so I know a pub I will visit next time got to support small businesses like this one what great people.
The council needs to start explaining what's happening with the regeneration project. They must have bought a lot of properties down there with compulsory purchase orders.
Good luck to Lee and Louisa ! What a brilliant initiative. The local Council would do well to sit with this couple and see how they can help. It does not have to cost money. A bit of red tape cutting would help. They could maybe find space for a Community hub somewhere.
That’s every other day haha! We have a few events coming up on our Facebook page but we do Tynesider Disco most weekends & Tynesider Soul Club 1st Sunday of the month.
Excellent upload indeed, & a good interview. What a lovely couple. ( My Mother used to be a barmaid in the Blue Bell pub ) Visiting the area over the years since 1982 it is sad to see the decline which unfortunately is common in the once thriving high streets. Good luck indeed to the new pub owners & will surely say good day on my next visit.
This is a great video Eddy and what a brilliant initiative in Gateshead!! Going to pass this one to my parents in case they fancy jumping on the bus through of a Wednesday. Thank you for these great videos! I miss the NE. Sadly, I live in Leeds now (boo).
Brilliant so happy to see my cousin Liz at the Wednesday morning get together never see my cousin liz much only see her at family funerals which is sad but it brightened my day up seeing her I lived in Springwell Estate in the late 60s until 1984 until I married and moved to Wallsend lovely seeing everyone having fun at the pub im going to have to get myself there I will definitely probably meet people I know from Gateshead it is a brilliant idea to get us older ones together I love watching your videos thanks 💙
Bravo sir! As a Geordie Cavalier now residing in Guangzhou China, who was born and grew up in Gateshead Low Fell, this warmed me noodles and Peking Duck no end. Any mention of 'Shepherds' takes me way way back. In it's heyday, Shepherds made Fenwicks look like Open all hours x Do carry on sir x
My Dad was Born in Low Fell in 1916 but he was born when it were County Durham. When he died in 2000 they put Gateshead on his death certificate. Had to bury him in a Durham Coffin to make amends
Haven't seen Gateshead High Street for about 30 years as I've moved away. Although I'd heard it had declined, I am shocked at just how much. Trinity Square looks fab now though. Good on them at the Tynesider for injecting life back into the high street. It is a fantastic idea because so many older people don't feel safe at night but still want to go out. Very impressed with the Railway Quarter because that used to look so dingy and dirty but now it looks bright and welcoming. Can't wait for your next video.
I'm from sunderland and had a mate who lived near the pear tree on sunderland road , spent a lot of Saturday nights and Sunday afternoons on the high street in the early 90s blue bell , the Grove, curlys , the traf and if we had owt left dinner in Gloucester on the sunday Was always busy and full of characters . Been through it a few times since , very sad . Have really fond memories of the high street ,they were great days
Thanks for starting out at my favourite pub. The Microbus and The Station East are the beating heart of Gateshead which attracts excellent musicians and bands to complement their excellent and very reasonably priced craft beers. As for the southern part of The High Street it needs pulling down and replaced with open spaces which could bring some much needed beauty to this bleak area!
It’s the people that make the pubs, we love the Microbus & Station East because they are ran by lovely people, fantastic beer and have a great community. The hub of Gateshead’s social scene.
When I come down in 3 weeks I will need to visit the pub. You showed my old Rangers pub the Blue Bell many great Sundays in there watching the Rangers matches.
I come back up to the North now and then because it brings back so many memories. My dad came fron Dunston as well as my auntie. My mother came from Newbiggin by the Sea so i usually stay there when i come back. I am pleased i have found this channel. I have subscribed.❤
Nice to see a spark of life back in the old place, my Mam used to work in Shephards as well. My Nana lived on Rochester Street in a home she had eleven kids in until the council compulsory purchased it and knocked it down for the horrible 70's things they put up. Gateshead council have a lot to answer for I think
I grew up on Coatsworth Road area and I couldn’t believe the change there recently. Gateshead high street has been going downhill for years, ever since they closed down the old Odeon building. Love the videos Eddie, just found your channel recently 👍
Got the bus from Newcastle to Whickham, via Gateshead, at traffic lights just past the junction past High Level bridge,I had the opportunity to to look at the buildings, absolutely beautiful some of them, especially the old Lloyds bank, so sad to see them in decline
I'll mention this on my show on Radio Tyneside Eddy, what an absolutely brilliant Idea and what lovely people, Lee and Luisa. Hats off to them for wanting to make Gateshead a brighter place and happier place.
It’s wonderful trying to save your area, im from Sunderland but always big up all the north east ( bar football 😉) hope Gateshead town centre can get back to something like it used to, great place
There’s not much of the high street left, over the years it’s been slowly flattened. I still love Gateshead no matter how much of a dump it’s become. Good to see new businesses giving it a go though. It gives a bit of hope for the future.
Hi mate. Just subscribed. Remember the high street vividly and shepherds. Was born in granville street in 1967, used to walk up the high street home with me mam. Remember laws and the pork shop. Me mam cleaned on Jackson street and the Metropole. Keep up the good work mate.
Hi Eddie, loved the video, I was born in the street at the start of the video when you mentioned the toilets. I was born in Chandless st on xmas day 1948. By the way the toilets are still there underneath the road surface. They were not destroyed just covered over.
Used to love the bustling high street when we were younger. 62 now. As apprentices at Clarke chapman, we used hit the high street when we finished for Christmas, pub crawl around, and finish at the Trafalgar. Which was in falling distance of the bus home. Great times.
Brilliant. There are some amazing people out there trying to make lives better for folk in Gateshead. I'm from Sunderland but I lived in Deckham for a few years on Northborne Street and used to love going down town and over to Newcastle. One of my favourite places was Linntone Hifi shop but I did hear it sadly closed. Next time I'm home I will visit Gateshead town centre and have a pint in one of the pubs.
Class video Eddie loved shepards going there with me mam in the 70s hopefully people come together to save these high streets all over the country.. internet shopping has changed the high street and it now has to adapt and change to suit peoples needs
I can still sing the ad song for Shepphards & I left the NE 50 years ago 😄sadly it's the same in many city centres ,the rise out of town retail parks hasn't helped. Where I live now even some charity shops have closed.Good luck to those trying to make a difference
Definable going to call in to this pub although I live 5 miles away from town centre but this couple are absolutely great and yeah I will patronise their pub shortly.
Would love to see the High Street come alive again had some great times in the Blue Bell and the Nags head and of course the Trafalgar well done again Eddie

Cracking video. I pass through here often and seen a decline over the years. Such a shame as I live in Gateshead too. Hopefully it picks up but with councils and internet shopping a lot of places are either there or heading in the same direction. Top stuff lad 👍🏻
Nice one Eddie👍🏻 good luck to Lee and Louisa doesn’t look like they’re short of business on a Wednesday so I’ll pop in another day and give them a little bit of custom.
Great video. I'm in Newcastle and not really familiar with Gateshead. I did recognise the Central Bar only because I'm sure it featured in an episode of Vera. 😂
shocking mate yet another town looking in a state. Aye I remember Shepherds of Gateshead its where my Mam used to do xmas shopping when she got her Provi loan haha. Well done to the people trying to salvage the area and great to see those guys having fun.
That pub you mentioned - the closed-down bookies - was called the Rector House. It was back-to-back to a pub called the Fox & Lamb on Burdon Street. Is the Tynesider housed in the old Barclays Bank building?
It's the whole country now less shops and more homeless alcoholics etc. Our country is being destroyed by a tyrant narcisist right in front of us and we just watching it happen. Sad really I miss the 90s when everyone was happy and north east was bouncing.
As much as I hate Starmer, and by golly I detest him, he's only been in the job 5 minutes. You might want to consider that all the working class people who kept on voting Tory and therefore austerity are the turkeys who kept voting for Christmas time and time again.
@blindmanB7 So do you believe that Kier Starmer, who has been Prime Minister for less than six months is to blame for this countries woes, and not the thirteen years of a Conservative government before then.
Remember was thriving here when I was growing up in the 80s/90s. Such a shame places like these are going to the nakkers yard now with lack of investment , online shopping and lack of money in people’s pockets. Sad to see. Ps….Eddie, get yourself over to Felling and do one on the Merry Widow of Windy Nook. I’m not going to stop asking 🤣👍
This situation is common in high streets all over the country. The wealth distribution has changed drastically over the last thirty years. The rich have got a lot richer while the working man and women are barely surviving. Plus online shopping has got a lot to do with the decline of the high street.
Gateshead was rundown even as a kid. I do miss Law’s Herbal Supplies next to Curley’s which no longer exists as they used to serve sarsaparilla. The guy who owned it his dad owned it before him.
Great interviewing, I cannot believe those ladies were in their 70’s wow 😳 looked younger……shame just crossing water changes the urban landscape and lives of those there.
Rarely ventured into gateshead, very little reason to go when Newcastle had so much more. I did go in the late 80s a few times, and it was rough back then. Not in the high St, but I remember going to a gun shop a few times. Weirdly located in what was probably previously a corner shop on the end of a brick terrace st.
The top end of Gateshead High Street has been buggered since at least the 1970s, the bottom ends knackered because the traffic has nowhere to go except into Tesco's car park
Recognise that drone shot eddy hope recognise that place that you showed us I recognise that place because walker terrace cedars college gateshead is there
I used to work at the careers office opposite the bus station and then at the civic centre in mid 90’s. I moved to Leeds for University and actually did my dissertation back in 1998 about the downfall of Gateshead High Street and the impact caused by the Metro Centre.
Houw 👊Yuh alreet bonny lad . Belter video this one eddy. What the hells happened to the heed .I haven't been ower Gateshead since my driving ban a couple of years ago.i knew it was in decline but I didn't expect to see it looking so empty.i half expected one of them ball thingymajiggs to roll past... 🤔 Tumbleweeds ☝️🤓 that's the thingymajiggs I was on aboot. Anyway crackin' stuff eddy 🤝
Over aggressive traffic wardens killed that high street for me. Pounced as soon as I parked outside of, and went into the Post Office a good while ago. Was parked only a couple of minutes. Appealed to council, and told they had zero tolerence parking rules and NO grace period at all. People wont go to shops if they get fined for doing so. Looks like the awful council are still happy to keep aggressively destroying Gateshead.
It looks a mess down and out it's terrible so much good people in Newcastle nice places for a night out for a drink and something to eat it's sad Joe R from Edinburgh Scotland all the best to you s all get it back to normal good times be lucky
Gateshead high street was ruined when they built the monstrosity of the big Tesco. There used to be a class market and loads of little local high street shops but now everyone just goes to the big supermarkets
Well done to the tynesider great to see the older generation have somewere to go and have some fun
Proud to be working with the Tynesider and all the other fantastic organisations in Gateshead Town Centre. We're trying our hardest to bring that vibrancy back to the High Street and supporting our local community the best we can. 💚

Flatten the top end of the high street build residential housing. Get rid of the flyover the whole area would look so much nicer.
They should build an indoor mall like in places like Wallsend.
Great video. I'm in Newcastle and not really familiar with Gateshead. I did recognise the Central Bar only because I'm sure it featured in an episode of Vera. 😂

Sad to see I spent my youth there the pubs were once so vibrant .
We know Gateshead council and the MetroCentre killed it dead .
That pub you mentioned - the closed-down bookies - was called the Rector House. It was back-to-back to a pub called the Fox & Lamb on Burdon Street. Is the Tynesider housed in the old Barclays Bank building?
Thanks for the info Lynn. Not sure if the Tynesider was Barclays or not

Gateshead was rundown even as a kid. I do miss Law’s Herbal Supplies next to Curley’s which no longer exists as they used to serve sarsaparilla. The guy who owned it his dad owned it before him.
I used to make a point of calling in to Laws for a glass of sarsaparilla when ever I was in Gateshead. Wonderful shop.
@@heathersmith394 In my later years at school I would actually skip school and I would visit Law's for a sarsaparilla. I miss them.
Nice jacket also 👍👍

They used to be a lot of good shops in Gateshead
The top end of Gateshead High Street has been buggered since at least the 1970s, the bottom ends knackered because the traffic has nowhere to go except into Tesco's car park
Recognise that drone shot eddy hope recognise that place that you showed us I recognise that place because walker terrace cedars college gateshead is there
Eddie the dj.....go for it 😂😂😂😂
I used to work at the careers office opposite the bus station and then at the civic centre in mid 90’s. I moved to Leeds for University and actually did my dissertation back in 1998 about the downfall of Gateshead High Street and the impact caused by the Metro Centre.
the metrocentre is also declining, just like the high street
@ yes my mam told me. It’s the same at the white rose centre in Leeds too. 😢
👊🏻👍🏻
Used to love going to Woolworths.
They were handing out free coffee (and access to toilets) during the Great North Run, hope they make a success of it.
☝️👊🏻👍🏻
Just spotted one of my old work colleagues about 10 minutes in!
I live in the south now and it's the same here, ghost town centres. Such a shame as 20 years they where thriving meeting points for everyone. 😢
I was born st Mary's court gateshead so yes massive change
It looks a mess down and out it's terrible so much good people in Newcastle nice places for a night out for a drink and something to eat it's sad Joe R from Edinburgh Scotland all the best to you s all get it back to normal good times be lucky
Yeah, Gateshead, like most old town centres in the dying….. Such a shame to see this happening all over.
They kept saying they would be revitalising the area for decades but they stopped at trinity square
Gateshead high street was ruined when they built the monstrosity of the big Tesco. There used to be a class market and loads of little local high street shops but now everyone just goes to the big supermarkets
