    One advantage to chitting potatoes is being able to control the amount of stems the potato produces,, 2 or 3 stems (or eyes) per potato will give a smaller amount but larger tubers,, leaving 4, 5, 6 stems will give more, but smaller, tubers

    • @Concojone5
      @Concojone5 3 месяца назад +1

      Really?! If that's true, that's fantastic!
      A second advantage I see is accelerating the time to harvest (freeing up the bed earlier to grow additional food). You might say "no point doing that because my last frost date is the limiting factor" but at least by starting the crop indoors the time at which shoots appear above ground should be more consistent i.e. closer to optimal in regard to last frost date)

    Here in Ireland we plant out potatoes on Paddy's Day. I'm growing Roosters this year but I need to catch all the wireworms in the new bed first. I use potatoes to do this, so there goes my first earlies 😂

    Peas and potatoes are so good for improving the soil,

      @@loyalstar9829 Perhaps I should have used a different term for this?!
      Just wanted to say that when I first had a garden,
      the Soil was poor, a little bit of sandy dirt without much nutrition or 'life' ,
      certainly very little Natural microbes or organic material.
      It had been grown on,
      but the years of chemical fertilizer and chemical weed/pest control had turned it into a dusty and lifeless patch!!
      I did a lot of research and work about soil and the living organisms that keep it alive...
      I grew legumes to help with the nitrogen levels,
      and the potatoes were also useful to the soil health.
      Bare earth isn't healthy,
      and so the peas and potatoes were good as a green compost,
      (After growing then harvesting.)
      I would then dig them back into the soil,
      and keep it in good condition by keeping it covered with a good growth of the natural plants of the area..(As a Green Mulch.)
      The potatoes helped me get air and compost dug into the soil,
      and legumes fix nitrogen from the air via the nodules on the roots.
      A bit more complicated than that, but I'm sure you'll get the picture now!!
      And I apologize if my first comment was in any way confusing!!
      Namasté 🙏🕊️

    Just checked, my last frost date, depending on the web site, it's just about a week or so ahead of yours 🇺🇸. I tend to be a bit of an aggressive gardener, if the weather is nice the seeds are going in 🙂. Soon as I can work the soil last weekend in March first week in april, the onions and the potatoes are going in... They will survive frost anyways. And well if the carrots die under a blanket of snow, well guess what I got more carrot seeds 😎.

    I'm chomping at the bit to start growing. I am going to buy some seed compost because I'm not sowing much as we're moving so just what can go in containers and look neat while selling, and I don't want insects in my house so I'm hoping that will be less likely. I'm going to be planting some tumbling toms and some lettuce and later on some outdoor cucumbers all in containers. I am actually really impatient to get sold and moved so that I can do what I actually want to in my garden. My one absolute necessity when looking for a house is a garden I can grow in. I am surprised that the honeycomb variety tomato is GMO. Do you not think that open pollinated seeds are important for self sufficiency? Genuinely curious, maybe I've learned wrong? I thought hybrids were bad for self sufficiency, for the planet and for our health. I am not an expert though. Thanks

    • @HuwRichards
      @HuwRichards  2 месяца назад

      Hybrids and GMOs are two very different things! Whilst yes you can't save true to seed hybrids, one packet can give you 2 plants for 5-6 years, so the cost is negligible when it comes to the yield. Seed saving is a different skill, and trying to save every single seed of every variety suddenly takes up a huge amount of time and space. Modern day self sufficiency is about choosing what you wish to be self sufficient in, not about trying to do absolutely everything, because then with that mindset you shouldn't buy polytunnel kits, or screws, etc

    • @Nihlink
      @Nihlink 2 месяца назад

      @@kristenphillips5803all tomatoes will become hybrids unless you grow them under isolation. Tomatoes cross pollinate so if you grow a bunch of different tomatoes in one area your seeds will be hybrids. Heirlooms don’t really exist as all modern tomatoes have been hybridized. And the actual heirloom varieties you might buy just mean they are just super old varieties. Doesn’t make them better or worse just different. But just so you understand if you buy heirloom seeds them grow tomatoes and save their seeds you aren’t guaranteed more heirloom tomatoes unless you grew them in a completely controlled isolated space where they couldn’t of been cross pollinated.

  • @tumasdedaan2146
    @tumasdedaan2146 3 месяца назад +3

    I question how self-sufficient it is to use F1 seed varieties (like the honeycomb tomato). Obviously in such a small space you can't maintain a heirloom easily for seed saving if you're also growing other cultivars but it seems like picking one to focus on then growing it each year is inevitable in terms of self-sufficiency.

      Really? The cost of seed is not deal breaker!

    • @HuwRichards
      @HuwRichards  3 месяца назад +5

      If you're more likely to eat it then arguably that's better than growing something heirloom that you're less likely to eat. Of course I mostly grow and prefer heirloom, and the excess food I grew in the self sufficiency garden I sold at my local greengrocer which more than covered my seed order, so yeah still self sufficient I think🌿

      @ml.5377 3 месяца назад +2

      I agree. Seed saving is a much needed practice and adapting fruits and veggies to our land is always better than getting seed every year.
      This year I am growing Cream Sausage tomatoes for the first time and, at 3,000 meters above sea level, they are super sweet. Already saving seed.

    • @tumasdedaan2146
      @tumasdedaan2146 3 месяца назад +1

      @@HuwRichardsI don't understand what the cost has to do with anything. I could call a car factory a self-sufficient garden if all that qualifies it as such is that the produce cover the costs of buying in food. Self-sufficient means not having to rely on externalities, which means no buying or selling.
