I did.something similar this year. I used aluminum roasters and mass sowed seeds. And I got some with clear lids and they became mini greenhouses. I love the use of cardboard to line trays for potting up!
A lady after my own heart! There is only one left in my family - me. I cannot eat so much, so huge harvests are not important. I like variety, though. I have limited space. I do exactly the same as the lady does but use vermiculite over the seeds which marks the rows and the vermiculite holds moisture (the light vermiculite also appeals to my artistic eye). Also, I use a spray bottle with water to water them when I have run out of trays to feed water into, having to juggle space a bit. Then I then cover with the clear lid. I also separate and replant them in larger pots when they are still very small which everyone warns against but works really well for me.
If that works for you that’s cool. For me spraying from above left the roots not getting much water and increased risk of fungus nats. I have a baking tray and put a bit of water in that to bottom sow, works great. Each to their own 😊
Learned a new way …. Feel really dumb for not thinking of using cardboard 🥴 I use it in my garden and compost but never thought of using as a seed starting tray.

Oh, what a great video!! I could have used this 2 weeks ago. I love the idea of potting up plants in cardboard lined crates. I had more seedlings than pots and compost. Thank you!! We never stop learning from each other.
My niece grew marigolds and tomatoes from an old milk crate filled with compost.

This method does work! I've done this for several years, and also use the bottom watering method. There is a slight difference with my bottom watering: I use the 1020 trays (no holes) to hold my modules/pots, and just keep the plants in the water, watering weekly, a half gallon per 1020 tray. Sometimes they still dry out before a week is up, so I have to watch and make sure my plants are alright. For me, I have not had damping off issues since doing the bottom watering, and my plants are hardy and beautiful. Mostly I am growing tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, and some flowers and herbs. I direct sow alot of other items. Thanks for the encouragement from this video. It's nice to see I'm not alone! Blessings!

I think this is an especially wonderful approach when you sow a lot of seeds of only a few varieties. I have the opposite situation: a lot of varieties with only a few plants needed of each. I'm spending a lot more time labeling/drawing up legends to keep things straight.

I do the same, however, I cover my seeds with either vermiculite or sand. Never had damping off.

I have done this way over the years and imagine yes, fine if you do just one module ( especially if only one small window sill is available!) But of course there is all the time, care and risk needed to prick them out and will still end up using more compost and will still ned more space for all the other trays and/or pots! But will keep the faith!

I dread this process every year. I struggle so much with getting my seeds to come up. I'm probably sowing them too deep. 🙃
I struggle to understand how this technique saves space, whilst initially it does, but as soon as you pot on you are back to needing a lot of space, so you might as well pot them straight into the intended pot that you would use to pot on
Germination rate would be the main thing I think.
For me, it would be useful as I start my seeds indoors, and I have very little space to put trays. But by the time the plants are big enough to pot up, I can put them outside, where I have much more room.

I have had quite a time trying to propagate poppy seeds this year. It was my first time and so far I have practically two failures in a row. My first batch has about a dozen out of 72 seedlings. They are barely hanging on and only about an inch tall at the most. I did another wide open tray of scattered seeds and I think they all got cooked by my heating mats. Definitely learning a lot about poppy seeds.
I have found higher germination for poppies throwing the seeds in place in the fall before a rain or snow. I now just shake out the seed heads in the fall and they are plentiful in the spring
@BetsyReitzel thank you. I’m growing them from a package of seeds. Tried to do them inside like I did the rest of my hyssop and salvia. Maybe I will sprinkle some seeds outdoors and see what happens. Thank you for the advice.
@@MrDuffy81poppies need "stratification" or cold exposure, so if you have a tray that hasn't germinated, try putting it in the fridge for a couple of weeks (if you have room), though they also need light, so you may be out of luck. Try winter sowing next year. Buy a tin roaster with a plastic lid for a seed tray. Punch holes in the bottom and the lid. Sow the seeds, set the tray outdoors in the fall.
@@MyFocusVaries what if I put them outdoors right now in select areas because it’s going to snow in the next few days. Then they may come back after the cold and the snow melts? And start growing? I’m in Colorado.
@@MrDuffy81 oh excellent! I'm in a warm climate in Vancouver BC Canada, so we're well into spring weather and I forget it's not the same elsewhere. If you have some sprouted seeds they will be killed by the cold temperatures and snow. But if it's only a few, it might be worth the loss to get germination if the majority of seeds haven't germinated.

I think I must be over watering, as the top of the compost is turning green?
Actually, all you need for tomato and pepper seeds is water (I just did this last week). Take a 2 oz plastic container with a lid, fill it with water, and dump in about 50 seeds.
Replace the water daily, and transfer any sprouted seeds into individual container. I did the same with sunflower seeds, just take a bit longer.
You do need compost and soil if the surface enzyme of the seeds has not been removed. Seeds from package are usually processed, and do not require soil to sprout.

They're 1020 trays with no holes. You can order them from most seed companies or gardening supply companies.

Why do people overcomplicate sowing? Fine, expensive potting mix is absolutely not necessary, and watering with a rose is completely fine (how did nature ever manage with rain?)
It's because someone might want to maximise growth. If I'm spending time growing something and money on seeds, I want to make sure I get the most seedlings in the smallest space for the least amount of money. Win win!
I do agree people do overcomplicate at times the main thing is you enjoy it and get results. though nature produces tonnes of seed and sacrifices many, while we try to optimise to reduce losses and cost, same reason you can't compare how farms are managed to an allotment as I've seen people do
This method of pricking works very well with old seed, as what comes up gets transfered into trays that will end up to be 100% full of healthy plants vs. spotty if you had directly seeded into your favorite size cell trays. Also, I water the newly seeded trays with a cheap 1 gallon bug sprayer, and after germination, switch to 100% bottom watering. You can bottom water into the heavy duty standard 10x20 trays, let them stand a bit, and tip the trays into a 5 gallon bucket to drain the excess, with very little mess. Then, transfer the 5 gallon bucket water back into your water container and reuse. I like that method because I can bottom water say 8 trays, go back to the beginning, pour the water off, and do 8 more. There is no wasted time watching anything soak up water like that.
I love your videos but please could you proof read the subtitles . I have my phone on silent so as to not disturb others around me so rely on the subtitles. Unfortunately these are SO inaccurate. Some are amusing (pee free compost) but unfortunately voice to text applications are notoriously wrong most of the time.
