I have to disagree with you regarding wanting to know where daughter-in-law is spending her money. If daughter-in-law is asking for money. mom-in-law has every right to know that it's not going to drugs or alcohol or fast food or starbucks or any other number of behaviors that are squandering that money. If daughter-in-law does not want to cough up the information, she does not get one penny.

I agree with you on this. If you pay your own way and don't ask me for money then I would agree with Dr. John that what you are doing with your money is none of my business but when you start coming to me for money I start disagreeing with Dr. John because it absolutely becomes my business what you are doing with your money. My son did the same to me right after my husband died. At the time, I had no clue how much money I would have coming in. His landlord called me. I paid thev3 months he was behind and told the landlord not to call me again. My son rarely speaks to me now. My husband and I spent most of our savings fighting cancer. You are not wrong, of course, to blame the he/she, or whatever that thing is. But at least as much blame must be allocated to the woman, as she chose to make a baby with this him, her, or whatever it is. Either that or she choose not to take proper precautions to insure a baby was not made.
Birth control has never been easier, more accessible, cheaper, or more reliable than it is now. Yet so many women cannot be bothered, or worse, they just want to crank out kids without any thought to the long term consequences for themselves or the child. And I don't want to hear something to the effect of; well the man has just as much responsibility as the woman to take precautions. While, on paper, that may be true, the reality is the man can just drop out, anytime he wants, as the thing in this example did. It is much harder for the woman to just drop out, so whether it is right or not, she must be the one to protect herself.

I think John's initial assessment of "indigent" is the real reason for the low, court-ordered weekly payment. Trans may be the reason for that state of being but you still can't get blood from a stone. If that individual is not working to their full potential, for whatever reason, there is no more money available for child support.
We have a similar situation in our own family. The ex-DIL had to be told she needed to figure out her own life, after being provided room & board for over a year after the split. The trans family member is not really a functioning member of society & is irritatingly self-absorbed but "her" life is also hers to figure out.

Man! I think these guys have missed the real points here, and there are two of them.
First, if you are giving somebody money to live, what they are doing with their money IS your business!
In this case, I believe it was said that the woman is working two jobs. How many hours are you working and how much money are you making? Where is all that money going? If it is going to drugs, toys, a way too expensive apartment, being flushed down the toilet, whatever, then you don't need my help. You need to relocate your spending priorities.
Second, children are almost always used as a weapon, but this possibility was not even mentioned. If a kid is on the street, it's easy to get custody (with a lawyer)

@@glitterstarbeau Well I'm not going to argue with you because I really have no knowledge of how hard or easy it would be to get custody of a child on the street, although I would imagine it varies from state to state. I would, however, suggest that the first problem could be just finding the child once they have been taken to the street.
