There’s also a resonant based synth like chromaphone (sculpture). It’s way more complex than chromaphone so I recommend you to learn how to use sculpture. There’s also a soft synth (alchemy), the analog, fm, and waveshape synths (they are all in the retrosynth plugin) but they are not thaat maleable in my opinion, blablabla at the end of the day Logic has everything you need. Also with plugins like a multi and compressor and en ensemble plugin. I just say this because I didn’t know about those and now I don’t use almost any third party plugin in my production.
you either need to have midi notes in the vocoder's track, or have to play on a keyboard while the vocal is being played. the easier out of both is to just place midi chords (relative to key of the song) and sidechain, select a preset, and then play.
Very informative. Thank you for teaching everything slowly and step by step. I'm still in the early stages of trying to re-create the vocoder sound from FUNKY TOWN by Lipps Inc.
So I think I found the problem, well if your doin what I’m doin then the problem is you have to play the track and play the keys when the vocals come up. Basically u r applying the effect in real time, it doesn’t play on its own
OK, here’s something that confuses me. While he’s playing the track with the vocoder, there’s no information in the vocoder track. Do you play chords or do you follow each lyric line in the scale? Also… is there a setting in that plug-in to make it track accurately while I’m playing? There’s a pretty significant delay between when I play the note and you hear it.
For some reason, my vocal won't pull up through the vocoder. (No robotic voices for me) I have it selected in the sidechain and have selected vocal on the signal.... hmm maybe the audio track/vox track needs to be flattened first?
I don't think he's playing keyboard live, the prompting of pitches is automatic once he links the two tracks, links the plugin to the pre recorded vocals.
Ok I muted the track and it works now. Maybe they had an update that changed how it works so muting it no longer kills the signal going into the vocoder.
i followed your steps, but my vocoder Track has no effect on my vocal-sound... Anything you forgot i think :-) (or i have a Mistake, but at which point... i dont know. i folloewd all steps)
@@julianestrada4610 okay so i’ll just put the whole process of what i did here: 1) new audio with input 1 and output 1+2. 2) new software instrument, set instrument to EVOC 20 PS (vocoder synth) and output should be 1 +2. 3) record or insert your audio. 4) while in the EVOC 20 PS slot, click “EVOC PS” in the plugins. when i did this it finally showed up, i’m not sure if it’s any different from the video but i hope it works for you. don’t forget to change the signal from “syn” to “voc”

Sounds awful! When you hear vocoders on songs, they dont' sound all choppy and broken up like this, you get a smooth multi-voice effect, this just doesn't sound good at all.
One thing I'd like to mention from using real vocoders over the years is you don't sing into a vocoder. You enunciate to words as clear as possible and the vocoder does the rest. Sing you sing, it less intelligibility .
I’ve found that if you layer 2 or 3 EVOCs with slightly different settings you can get a really decent vocoder sound
Thanks for the tip!!!
What? I didn't even know there was a default Vocal synth plugin in Logic. Thank you! Very Helpful

When I make the side chain to my audio, and change signal to voc, I don't hear anything coming through the plug-in. How do I make it work?

Yeah....
I love the excitement in your voice as you explain
For some reason no sound is coming out of my vocoder. I try to play it on the piano roll and nothing comes out, any idea how to fix that?
I've got the same problem...
Lol noobs
You need to route "Sidechain" the vocoder to the desire sound you want to tweak

I'll say it - fxcking amazing tutorial. I've always known of this tool but most teachers arent as interesting or in-depth while also being relatable.

You can also change the sound of the synthesizer by scrubbing the oscillators (0's next to Wave 1 and Wave 2 on the left)
what is under in logic presets?
I hope that in Logic 10.8 would make a redesign of a modern User interface of EVOC plugin.
Can't believe we got Gene Belcher teaching us how to vocode what a time to be alive

Is it possible to use this effect live? Like hold down a chord and sing directly into the mic
yeah I did it but there is a delay... so idk probably if you could reduce the delay enough
I've wanted this for so long thanks so much
Wait sorry I’m new to logic, where is the keyboard so that I can use the vocoder?

It does it for me but when I listen to the recorded audio it some low synth going on instead of what’s being heard when I record.
thank you for the egg of knowledge. im subscribed!
is there a way to play the keys while you sing at the same time. currently i have to record a vocal to play it back to hear the vocoder
Awesome tutorial
Can you do this with a guitar instead of midi keyboard?
WOOOOOOW. THAT WAS LIT.!!!
Great tutorial, thanks. Super clear.
I was literalllly looking up how to do this for a song and didn't know this was you. Thanks Drew! (An old childhood friend) -Garret

Hi, May be obvious, but are you playing keys along with the vocals or the vocoder recognize the pitch?
I think he is
I believe it needs some sort of midi input, whether you draw it in, or play along with a keyboard

Is it possible for me to trigger a snare drum sample playing a real snare live? I thought that maybe using vocoder for that..
That's not how vocoder works. You need to get a midi trigger for your snare and set it up to trigger the virtual snare
