If you truly don't understand what mullen has done for skateboarding you don't skate or don't have true appreciation for skateboarding. An this man is more humble and has more humility than any pro of this era.

Thank you youtube recommendations for bringing me back to this one. Rodney is King, no argument there. In real-time, you'll be hard pressed to find anyone that does it as smoothly and clean as he does. Almost looks like magic, like he floats in mid-air while the board spins in ways it shouldn't be able to, and then latches back onto his feet. In slow-mo, it looks like he has real-life cheat codes enabled.

I just found this 2018 Rodney Mullen, and being a Rodney Mullen fan (my #1 sportsperson) I was worried I'd see signs of aging from Rodney. He blew my mind yet again. Greatest of all time. I'm saying this literally with watery eyes.
Ya know if you go to a random parking lot at night in southern california, any given night, you may have a chance to see him still out there doing work. The spark just never left this man.
Also the sad part. He invent d so many moves that nobody noticed in competitions, so he started focusing on moves that are easily noticed. This was the tragedy of the 360 flip, which got credited to Jason Lee. Rodney did this in competition and nobody noticed it, so he started adding double 360 (kick) flips and still nobody noticed. They thought he was doing 360 shuv-its. Which look similar at realtime speed.
This ended up on my recommendations, which means it probably ended up in yours. If anyone is seeing this video in 2024, please give Dianna from @thephysicsgirl some love. Her team filmed this footage of Rodney and she's been sick for a few years now and was forced to stop doing what she loved.
I really wish we could get a proper part from Rodney Mullen again. The last couple times he's filmed something, it's just gone into a RUclips video edited by someone who wants to turn it into an art piece instead of a skate video. This one is better than the 360 video thing, but still. I'd give anything for a Round 4.

Rodney Mullen is so far beyond any other skater to this day. He has the same kind of tortured genius as Bach or Beethoven. If you watch the bones brigade documentary, his father was going to make him quit skating. So he spent his last summer doing everything he could and he literally found a way to ride every surface of the board and invented or innovated the modern vocabulary of skate tricks. He mastered skateboarding in a way no one else ever will. All modern street skating is just people doing what Rodney Mullen did, but shittier. Goat 🐐 💯

Charles McMurray It’s called centrifugal force. As you move mass away from the center the spinning speed decreases but lasts longer. He pulls his arms in and out to control his rotation speed accurately and stay in balance.

For me he's the greatest and most important skater of all time, it's not to diminish what Tony Hawks was, but for me Rod is the forerunner of everything, he just created things from nothing. Tony had a role unique in history that was to spread the sport, without him skateboarding would not have the popularity it has today. I imagine that if, at the time Rod started, there were already social networks and the internet easily accessible, today he would be a freak on digital media, Facebook, Instagram, tiktok and etc.

I can’t imagine how dark the world of skating will be when we inevitably lose this man to time. After 30+ years not a single skateboarder that came after him has come close to this level of perfection and profound knowledge of how to ride a skateboard.

For me he's the greatest and most important skater of all time, it's not to diminish what Tony Hawks was, but for me Rod is the forerunner of everything, he just created things from nothing. Tony had a role unique in history that was to spread the sport, without him skateboarding would not have the popularity it has today. I imagine that if, at the time Rod started, there were already social networks and the internet easily accessible, today he would be a freak on digital media, Facebook, Instagram, tiktok and etc.
Thats all great, but can he look as amateur as I look when I skate? Nope.....Rodney could probably underflip a butter knife and still look good....
