  • Ahead of our next Speaker Series Live with engineer and godfather of street skating Rodney Mullen at the Royal Institution in September, Suze popped by his house in lovely Los Angeles after the FORCE11 Conference to chat about culture, creativity and community in science and skateboarding.
    As a chemical engineer, an inventor and innovator, and a professional skateboarder responsible for revolutionising the sport and taking it from the pools to the streets, Rodney is no stranger to success, failure, and problem-solving. In this conversation, Suze asks him about the role community plays in research and development, the power of persistence, and why we need many different minds in art and science to make a meaningful and impactful difference to society. Read more about their conversation here:
    www.digital-sc...
    Series lead and interviewer: Dr Suze Kundu, Director of Researcher and Community Engagement, Digital Science. Filming and production support: Huw James, Science Story Lab. Filmed at Rodney Mullen's home in Los Angeles, USA.

    People tend to stereotype skateboarders back in the day as marauding punks with nothing better to do, yet Rodney is one of those intellectuals whose background seems anathema to what people think of skating. Heck, Tony Hawk himself could be counted as one given his background in maths and aptitude for technology.

    • @PowuhToSeven
      @PowuhToSeven 20 дней назад

      Ever since Tony was a child he would sneak into rich people's houses to skate bowls. He literally had nothing better to do. The only thing he didn't do was party hard. And he listened to dead Kennedy's. He's literally a punk.

    Aa a older adult now. Growing up skateboarding starting in the year 2000. I owe the ones that cane before me with so much respect. I could listen to Rodney Mullen talk about anything. He's so humble and nice. I respect him on so many levels. I'm thankful for the wonderful topics he talked about in this interview. The ending made me cry. I can't explain it. It just hit home to me. I will share this video with another friend i grew up skateboarding with.

    That was a marvelous interview. The questions being asked, I think, were perfect for Rodney to bounce off of and really dive into his mind for someone who is so smart and creative but always modest. Especially the idea of accepting and using failure as a tool really spoke to me as someone who is currently trying to come to terms with my failures to achieve a lifestyle for me that brings creativity, support, and happiness.

    One of the best human beings to ever live. We share a birthday, but I'm 10 years younger. I'm getting over a broken rib from a bad slam right now. People look at me crazy because I not only still skate, but that I still can at my age. I can't wait to see what they say in 10 years when I'm Rodney's age now. All of the tricks I can do are all rooted back to the puzzles Rodney solved for us in the 80's. If there was a humanity hall of fame, Rodney would be the first inductee. Such a beautiful mind and soul.

  • @claytongouin5605
    @claytongouin5605 17 дней назад

    Aside from enjoying Rodney's perspectives and wisdom, his point on skaters' willingness to fail and keep trying through experimentation is remarkable. I certainly did not think that skateboarding had hardened me so much to failure and my own 'failure' at high level academic levels were so much easier for me to handle perhaps because of skateboarding. In the end, it was worth walking away without 'succeeding' in a Ph.D. because I tried and I tried hard. The whole experience was well worth the failure for everything else I learned along the way.
    Thanks for all you have contributed to our world, and your inspiration to me as a young isolated skater, Rodney. Wonderful interview.

    I would love to hear his input on that last question. I felt that he totally got off base and went on with what he wanted to say instead of a answer. It doesn’t matter I just wanted a different answer to that question a answer that was about the question. What I got out of it was the act of skateboarding is pure and simple but looking at the evolution of what we ride from the 60s to the 2020s what are we going to be riding in 20 years? I would like to go faster with less pushing but thats just me. Great interview as always with the most amazing insights and philosophy of such a simple toy

    Rodney has been around so long that he has pondered the many dimensions that exist around skateboarding. It is really a great phenomenon that even most participants of the activity don't even consciensly fathom how it affects their being both physically and mentally. There is a strange harmony that those who partake of skateboarding take in to themselves.Rodney, although sometimes seeming a bit autistic in his manner, feels this wholeheartedly, as per my perception of him.
    I don't know why, but those who partake of skateboarding with their whole being, seem to have a different kind of development that supercedes the average person. Whether it be how they seem to be "forever young" or to look at everyday things in a quite different manner, they definitely develop beyond the average person....as per my own percption, and many others who've similarly told me so.
