Just watched 3.5 hours of this (Rodney, then Christian). Loving it. Both epic episodes. Really appreciate Jason Ellis's Aussie irreverence and humour in the face of such skateboarding legends.
This is a good reminder that Ellis is actually pretty great at his job and that Tony's personality seemingly hasn't changed in 40 years. You two are so fun to watch and I loved this conversation with Christian.
This podcast is unreal. It’s like if Michael Jordan sat down with Bird and magic to just shoot the shit about the old days and tell stories it’s unbelievable!!!!!!!!!
Thank you legends! Tony and Christian are the reason I still skate vert at age 49. Ironically, my daughter is named Ellis. Now I'd like to land a kick flip indy before I'm 50.
Thanks to Tony for mentioning the Hawk/Hosoi double signature photo, I went directly to the site and purchased one. Im super stoked to get this pic signed my my two most favourite skaters ever. Great interview full of great stories. Christian and Tony, thank you for inspiring me to be a vert skater way back in the day and still skating today with my son. Ride until the wheels fall off!!
as a hair stylist, i love and appreciate the hair extension story! Christian visited the hair salon I work at a few years ago and it was like a celebrity walked in the door. He was so kind and gracious. Skate or die my friends! Until the wheels fall off!
Well this was fun. Cool to have been observing these two from the distance of the Midwest, during the peak of the 80s vert craze, and also to see them 35+ years later, all of us still skating. Skateboarding is awesome.
The 80's was such a great time to skate. It was underground, but these guys were rock stars that were ours. No one outside of skateboarding knew who they were, but they were as big as any rock star or movie star to us skaters. The decks and clothes were neons, pastels, and other bright colors, and where style was just as important as technical skills. It went hand in hand with the 80's punk/alternative scene too. Those bands were huge to us, but they weren't widely known just like Hawk and Hosoi. That was the 80's.
it was way more exclusive and the complete opposite of mainstream during a time that the mainstream could have been the worst in human history. girls were interested in me just because i was a skater. now its more popular than baseball with the kids. good yeah bad yeah can i ever be happy no lol
I love you guys - grew up in Ventura. Christian, I'm a pastor's kid and I've always looked for God and can't find Him like you have. Thanks for your share on this podcast. And Ellis. I've been sponsored too and 12 stepped. I'm old and I am losing time finding what you guys have. At any rate - love the show!
As someone who grew up watching these guys (im 50 now), this was amazing. Watched it straight through, and it probably wont be the last time I do that. And Ellis just adds so much to the conversation, asking everything Id want to ask.
Love this podcast, really cool stories, im amazed Tony does this podcast, he really doesn't have to, the guys worth so much he could just be out of the public eye if he wanted to, but im glad hes doin it and putting a spotlight on some really cool people Christian is a solid dude, and of course Jason is the best co host. Those roads were ROUGH. Now with adult money and time finally getting to enjoy parks and smooth concrete. It’s the best. Turn 50 this year. Catch all these stories now is nostalgic. Thank you
This is so special. For them to be able to relate their experiences from the unique perspective they have about it all is magical. To see and hear about the camaraderie and the love and the respect these guys have for each other and the skate scene that fed and nurtured them is an incredible gift in these bleak times. So stoked to see Christian on this episode. What a Monday. Loved that you guys went so long and got into those weeds. Amazing stuff. Thank you so much for this.
Just sat through the first 100 minutes with a full-on perma-smile. Very few 100 minute segments of my life have been better. Part of me realizes that's kinda sad. However, I just wanted to say "thank you". Not only for this 143 minutes but for the last 37 years of stoke and inspiration, thank you. Thank you both (Tony and Chrstian) for being yourselves. Even you, Ellis. Stoked on you and for you. Keep crushin' Jason! Really, really good to see your growth and your maturing into a fine human being. Love and respect always. Take care fellas!
So good to see Christian now. I was lucky enough to be with G&S and have a buddy riding for Dogtown. Skating around Santa Monica and hanging out in Venice and seeing Christian at his peak. Money and drugs chewed up a lot of good dudes. Most never recovered. I’m glad I never touched the stuff, and glad Christian found his way. God bless you and your family.
Christian did a demo in '88 in SLC, I was around 14. He did a morning demo at a local skate shop, and then a demo at our local Raging Waters. Not many people at the early demo, so my friends and I were able to skate with him in the parking lot for about an hour then we saw him at the Raging Waters demo and he saw us remembering who we were from earlier and stoked us with t-shirts and stickers. Great dude.
Hosoi has done everything that modern people crave.fame.money etc.but his attitude is reassuring and inspiring.no outta control ego.he gets excited for others and hypes them before he would hype himself.he wouldnt hype himself nowadays anyways.dude sees through the illusion of ego
Truly one of the greatest conversations ever about real Venice skateboarding legends. I was bnr in Venice grew watching & skateboarding in Venice when the palladium was still there. Much respect to Tony hawk, Christian Hosoi, & Jason Ellis. You guys are always an inspiration for generations of skateboarding to come. I would see these guys skating at the beach as a kid….. & I am still on inspired to my core to this day ….skateboarding is not crime…!! Ghostown!!!
Tony and Hosoi are honestly imo the 1a and 1b greatest vert skaters all time. I love that these two’s styles at their peaks were polar opposites of each other but equally GOAT’d. Tony had all the tech and Christian had all the style.
I grew up heavy into skating in the late 90s and mid-2000s, needless to say I was a huge Tony Hawk fan, I grew up on his games. I remember my Dad always talking about Christian Hosoi when I was a kid, he would tell me how innovative and inspiring Hosoi was to the big air scene.. really cool seeing these legends talk about the times my dad always talked about. I totally get why Hosoi is and will always be his favorite skater, what a cool dude. I got Dad a Hosoi reprint Hammerhead deck for christmas this year and he told me it made him want to cry and that it was his favorite gift he'd ever been given. Thank you guys for everything you've done for the sport and Christian Hosoi, thank you for allowing me to share something special with my dad even after all these years. Skateboarding is for LIFE.
The best thing about this podcast and really any podcast is that I get to finally get a glimpse of how Tony Hawk interacts with people on a real level. I've been idolizing this guy since I was 10 years old which was 35 years ago. I could watch his videos, and see his interviews, but that doesn't really show who he is as a person. Podcasts are one of the great things about the modern age of the internet.
It’s a left field request, but PLEASE get Barry Zaritsky on as a guest. Outside of his appearances on the TH Tours, he seemed so mysterious and I’m only vaguely aware of his long standing history in skateboarding. Would be awesome to learn more about the dude behind the moustache! 👴🏼
Absolutely a phenomenal interview/conversation!!!! So awesome to see them swapping old stories from the past with each other and the respect between them is very apparent. Closest thing to a Rockstar without music. Absolute Legends!!!!!! Much appreciated gentlemen and excellent questions Ellis.
Wow. Im an instant fan of this channel! I grew up skating looking up to these guys. Christian got the biggest air out of everyone back in the day. Thanks for this! Skate or die...yeah i said it 😁
The fact that these 2 gentleman made such a profound impact that long ago that the shock waves are still ringing out is truly amazing. These stories are still super compelling for many people who love and respect rad fucking moments of skate history
Thank you so much for this episode!! When I’ve watched things about Christian, Tony is always part of the interview, conversation etc or vice Versa but never together in the same room! This was epic!! Thank you so much🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
Absolutely amazing show! Made me cry tears of joy listening to Christian give his testimony! Blessings and Gratitude to Tony and Christian, you've both been such a huge inspiration in my life and in fact the ENTIRE WORLD!!! Real Super Heroes!
i'm not a skating fan by any stretch.......and i take nothing away from tony hawks talent and what he's accomplished; BUT - i still remember seeing a video of hosoi going so HIGH into the air and seemingly hold up there before coming down.........shocking and amazing at the same time. edit - great video, btw..........
Tony and Jason are the best! So happy to see Christian thriving, happy and loving life. I could listen to these guys talk for hours upon hours. Guest request…love to see Tony interview Duane Peters lol!
What a great conversation. And the part about Del Mar... we gotta mention Billy Ruff as well. Both Hawk and Ruff had that keyhole down. But guys like Hosoi and Lester Kasai kept the pressure on. The best memories for sure.
I still remember all of this like it was this morning. It was an incredible place in time. And to watch the rival, I didn’t ever think it was arrival. I just went through the motions of what was being projected. But I think everyone knew, we were all going to get sick and tired of watching someone go back-and-forth on the ramp pulling great big areas with a lot of style. And in the end, the amount of tricks that Toni shared with us. That helped us progress in our skateboarding blew away the fact that Cristian could never ever give us any of that. Sadly, I think that pressure overwhelmed Christian to the point where he tried to disguise things with drugs. In my mind, I would have loved for Toni and Christian to hang out at Tony’s and just passed tricks back-and-forth so they both could’ve progressed together. Because when the X game started and there was no Christian, skateboarding was missing something. And it would’ve changed the direction that skateboarding went. If there was only something besides this stupid rival. It can’t be fixed now. But when you hear this conversation, it’s clear. You can see it, you can feel it, and we can’t change it and that sucks. But thank God we all got to go through it. And think God in the end Christian chose God and fixed everything. Now entertainment value alone, how lucky we all are to hear this story. Helmets off to you too. Thank you. You are both #OfTheEpic
On a sidenote. I have the best Mike McGill station wagon disaster ever. And the best part is, he still ended up to be a hero for how cool he was by the way he handled that situation and by what he was doing to help his family. And that makes Mike McGill the most amazing person on planet earth. True story. Really happened. You might ask me what is the story? And I might tell you. Then again, you probably won’t even notice this comment. #NowThatsComedy.
When anybody speaks of Christian Hosoi the one thing that comes to mind is definitely the Christ air nobody could do it better than Christian.... NOBODY !!!!! And he's just a hell of a nice guy, style, the dude is just pure style. What an awesome interview, Thanks guys 👍👍

Best podcast so far! I’m so grateful to have experienced being an 80s skater, and to see you all still shred is mind blowing
Man the love you guys have for eachother at the end of this episode so awesome. You guys are the best.
Hosoi has done everything that modern people crave.fame.money etc.but his attitude is reassuring and inspiring.no outta control ego.he gets excited for others and hypes them before he would hype himself.he wouldnt hype himself nowadays anyways.dude sees through the illusion of ego
I can't tell you how much I fucking loved this episode, and how much this podcast overall means to me. 🧡
Way to go, gentlemen. Thank you.
Ghostown!!!
hell yea, such a great episode!!! 1987: my "hardcore skater" Hosoi board vs my little "geek" brother's Hawk board 🤣
Totally true. Christian was THE COOL skater. Total rock star of the skating world!
Thank you so much. That was the best to see how happy you guys were to share your memories with us.
Soo stoaked for this one. Working up north (Australia) in a shitty room and hawk vs wolf will be perfect for tonight.
That’s a good one.
Big fan of Barry Zaritsky and his amazing moustache
The best part of my Monday is tuning into this pod in the morning with my coffee and herb
Tony & Christian are The Raddest !!
Another Great Show Guys !!
😎👍🌴☀️🛹🛹🛹🛹
Absolutely a phenomenal interview/conversation!!!! So awesome to see them swapping old stories from the past with each other and the respect between them is very apparent. Closest thing to a Rockstar without music. Absolute Legends!!!!!! Much appreciated gentlemen and excellent questions Ellis.
Wow. Im an instant fan of this channel! I grew up skating looking up to these guys. Christian got the biggest air out of everyone back in the day. Thanks for this! Skate or die...yeah i said it 😁
This was such a great episode.
Hosoi’s a gem🙌 his input on learning and progression is really cool!
Skateboard heroes from my childhood. Such a historical full circle moment!! Thanks for being a huge inspiration to us all!
The fact that these 2 gentleman made such a profound impact that long ago that the shock waves are still ringing out is truly amazing. These stories are still super compelling for many people who love and respect rad fucking moments of skate history
Incredible podcast. To hear those two legends reminisce about the old days was a real treat. Must listen for all skateboarders! Thank you!
I REALLY appreciate the openness about the drug stories highlighting both good and bad elements from a truthful perspective. thank you.
Agreed, 80’s were the days my bedroom walls were full of Hawk/Hosoi “Thrasher” mag pics everywhere!#🛹🤘🏻✨
Phenomenal.....get Christian back on the show ASAP
This is SO GREAT. I have laughed so hard with you guys. 3 heroes lettin' it fly. You guys are the best.
Most Underrated Show on the Tube perhaps? Keep up the good content. Memories.
Dude this podcast is SO GOOD!!! I’ve been listening every night at work, literally my whole shift. And as a die hard skate rat, this is GOLD!!!
Love all these SKATE LEGENDS! This is so cool to see! Love this podcast!
Brilliant. Thankyou. Most I have smiled in a longtime. Nailed it.
After cutting my teeth on a Variflex my first legit complete was a Hosoi hammerhead w Indy's and Slimeball wheels. Best Christmas morning ever!
i'm not a skating fan by any stretch.......and i take nothing away from tony hawks talent and what he's accomplished; BUT - i still remember seeing a video of hosoi going so HIGH into the air and seemingly hold up there before coming down.........shocking and amazing at the same time. edit - great video, btw..........
I will watch this more than once. So damn good! Thanks for this. You guys killed it!!
This was incredible. Thank you. Can't wait till you get a million views.
Tony and Jason are the best! So happy to see Christian thriving, happy and loving life. I could listen to these guys talk for hours upon hours. Guest request…love to see Tony interview Duane Peters lol!
The part where he talks about his kids is the best part by far... great stuff!
What a great conversation. And the part about Del Mar... we gotta mention Billy Ruff as well. Both Hawk and Ruff had that keyhole down. But guys like Hosoi and Lester Kasai kept the pressure on. The best memories for sure.
Grew up by mt. Trashmore... Hearing the Rodney stories was so good. Found this channel after watching the nine club... So good.
WOW Christian so inspiring the lord does change life's God is real I'm so happy I watched this God bless Christian
One of the best podcast I’ve ever watched. no question. Legendary show!
When anybody speaks of Christian Hosoi the one thing that comes to mind is definitely the Christ air nobody could do it better than Christian.... NOBODY !!!!!
And he's just a hell of a nice guy, style, the dude is just pure style.
What an awesome interview, Thanks guys 👍👍
only 3.9 k likes here...? legendary video!!
For a minute I thought Christian was going to to be chill.... nope. I love that dude
So glad I found this cast!!!! I'm from the 90s gen of street skating. Vert just wasn't a thing where I'm from but I always looked up to these guys!
Finally this ones gonna be awesome can’t wait to listen.
That was amazing!!!! Was a Hawk fan and a tall skinny kid and the technical moves were my inspiration. Stoked to hear Hosoi story
