    I saw this band when they came to Tokyo in '89. They played at a small live house jam packed and standing room only. After playing the first song in tune, Arto Lindsay untuned his guitar like the one he is playing in this video. During the break between the songs, he saw we were all kind of quietly waiting for the next song (you know how the Japanese are) and he asked us "Don't you guys have any friends here?" It was funny.

    Tony and Melvin are just outrageous here. Killer rhythm section and a great production mix by this show.. the sound is awesome. Credit to Arto for his recruiting skills. I try to deny it, but I find these tunes mesmerizing and infectious. Uniquely trippy, free, and funky all at once. This is a seriously unique treat.

    I bought the LP back then and love it until now. Then I saw them, bringing their production to stage and what really blew my mind was, that they really could perform the unbelievable complexity of the rhythms with this highly professional attitude and give even more, adding this joy of play, this video is testify too. Couldn't find any other gem of this stunning unique and vital band, thanks so much for posting.

    the dorky avant-garde frontman. the house band straight out of an 80s instructional yoga tape. the sinisterly intense spanish percussionist. this is something that is like a fever-dream. but its real and actually happened. this video, its like a peep into a hyper-reality where everything is a non-sequitur.

      @@mat..n.7061 Well Adrian Belew is an amazing and highly original sounding guitarist. Arto Lindsay is not a guitarist in the true sense. He only uses the guitar as a percussion/noise instrument. And even if he knows how to really play it, we never see or hear him doing it.

    I like The Ambitious Lovers, not a bad way... we were in the 80's... And exactly, it sounds like the Talking Heads
    The band is really good and Arto made excellent records with Peter Scherer, as "Pretty Ugly", more abstract...
    I can understand this desire of funky groove, a kind of Steely Dan finally with more punk spirit.
    Prince is in the house.

    • @ferroxglideh5621
      @ferroxglideh5621 5 лет назад +3

      Maybe more Joe Jackson than Steely Dan, but the Belewisms are totally relevant to the Talking Heads vibe.. And Steely Dan were pretty fucking punk. I wonder what NYC bands would have sounded like if Arto had of made the transition to popular success that Sonic Youth managed. Cheers pal! I dig your analysis.

    It’s interesting how in 1989 music was still instinctively 80s. This song has 80s all over it. It couldve came out 8 years earlier and I wouldnt be surprised. It would completely fit. But if we just go one year forward to 1990 then it would no longer fit.
