  • To answer a question about club bending options, we look at bending a golf club for loft and lie using a hammer, a vise, and my iPhone. Can we bend the club and not destroy it??

I couldn’t help it, the full moon got me last night! I bent an old Ping eye 9 iron, clone to 70 degrees, added 6 degrees to make like Ping Chipp R. Cut to 34 inches and Put a Jumbomax ultralight on it. Got it to a C6, but to match Ping E6 is a bit away! But so much room in the cavity for lead, lol

From a physics standpoint, the mallet method should work AND carry less risk of breaking the club. A simple analogy may help in understanding. If you were removing a heavily overtightened or rusted lug nut on a car and you used a lug wrench with perhaps a leverage extension, you increase your chances of snapping the stud. Constant heavy pressure produces heat as the metal stretches, This softens the the metal resulting in a break. What's the solution? An impact driver. The impact driver produces a quick but very forceful hit to the nut in both a rotational and linear direction. This "whack" produces a mini stretch with little heat. The mallet technique applied to a golf club should work just fine. The trick is you need to apply a heavy smack (much harder than the one you applied) and there cannot be any "give" anywhere along the clamping structure (your table was way to flimsy and absorbed most of impact). Of course, just as with the bending machine, you will need to learn what is a one, two, or three degree whack! Note: There is an old trick for flattening the lie angle. take a towel, fold it a few times and place it on a cement surface. Take the club and hold it in front of you like an axe with the toe up. Then deliver a very forceful blow on the towel right at the point were the hosel makes a right turn into the head (i.e. elbow). Sounds scary but it works!

Ping has been bending every non black dot iron head at the factory for over 50 years using a mallet. They use it in their pro tour vans as well, you can RUclips it. This is done on some of the hardest cast steel in golf.
So yeah…you don’t need that $5k lie machine.

If you use a Dead blow hammer it leaves no marks. Also if you clamp the hosel and hit the sole that works too. Im going to look for that angle app on my iPhone. Good luck.

Would love to see a video on the minimal viable bending tool for irons/wedges. An iPhone + mini sledge might be a little too basic. A $700 tool might be a little too much. Is a manual clamp my best option? Not doing anything crazy. Just want to make sure, say, my PW is 46* and not 45* or 47* and make small adjustments without damage.

    • @EFGMC

Golf works has a vise mount for irons around $200. Then you would need a bar for around $80. Golfworks also sells a more basic loft lie machine that runs around $350 I think. That is me has the measuring arms so you don’t need a protractor or phone app.

The best was to do this is heavy rubber dead blow and grab at the bottom third of the shaft and put consistent pressure in the direction you want it to move wile hitting it and to clamp it use thick piece of plate steel on the face and cut a piece of wood to the rear profile of the club and set it up so the Jaws of the vice really close to the hosel but still on the face

Thanks for this! I have a bullseye La femme with a slight deflection in the shaft. I’m OCD so… it doesn’t affect the club terribly but it drives me nuts. I’ll probably ruin the shaft if I try to straighten it at home. 🤣 do they do that at a shop or could you do it possibly? I’m trying to refurbish it to as new as possible. It was my grandmas putter.

    • @EFGMC

If it’s a kink, hard to fix. You can bend shafts a little but must be careful about kinking yourself.
Other option is find another bullseye with same shaft and swap it in.

So in order to know what the lie is do you need to know what the original lie angle is? IE from 64* original lie to go to 62* making the club -2 flat for the lie angle using your phone. Not worried about the loft. Thanks

The only thing to be mindful of is that heating the metal can alter the tempering. Potentially either making them brittle or soft depending on how high you heat them and how fast you cool them. Measuring the loft and lie on a hot piece of metal is also difficult, and you don't want to keep heating and cooling the metal because it you will put a lot of internal stresses into the steel that will then need to be annealed otherwise it will be very brittle and snap.
