- Maxwell finally tells Fran he loves her! Unfortunately, he shortly takes it back. Fran is not happy!
From Season 4 Episode 1, 'The Tart With Heart'. Fran and Maxwell have returned from their trip to Paris on which Maxwell told Fran that he loves her only to shortly take it back. Wrong. "We were on a break" was the Friends version of "the thing". The nanny was here way before Friends.

@@baileejo7663 "The thing" was in season finale, that aired on May 20, 1996. But "we were on a break" episode of The friends aired on February 13, 1997. So The Thing in The Nanny was first, no doubt. That took me like two minutes to find, easy.

It didn’t happen in this episode, but I love that moment later in the series when Niles say he is sick of Maxwell going back and forth on loving Fran, grabbing by his shirt and telling him to make a move

I give the show a lot of credit for making this plot believable. Max had good reasons to keep Fran at arms length. An irresponsible affair with her could have cost him millions.
@@sleepinggorilla ugh, that wasn’t the reason. The reason was because he’s a newly widowed man scared of loving again and worried to move on. It’s not an “affair”, obviously the connection they have is a lot deeper than that and he knew it. He’s just scared to love and needs someone to open him up.
@@KoolKukumber Maxwell was widowed when Grace was about 3 meaning at this point he's been a widow for about 7 years that's not really all recent.

That was Maxwell's cheapest moment. I've always understood his moral doubts, his struggle to let Sarah go and allow himself to be fully committed to a new woman, but after everything this woman did for him +his children, hurting her like that was beneath him! Worse enough that he had the nerve to build and destroy Fran's Hope's within the glimpse of an eye, also the shallow, ruthless manner in which Max suggested she had to react understandable. Plus, we all know he didn't take The Thing back because he had doubts, none of us overthink or even lie the second before we (almost) die, it was "too true"!
He felt it or else hw would not have said it for real ,he think he has always love Fran ,mostly because of how she and the kids bonded ,because he could have gone to CC,after all they were partners lol.
Is it just me?, or the best part of this video was Brighton holding the radio at the end 😂😂😂

Niles’ eavesdropping moments are always hilarious! I remember there was one where he and cc were trying to listen to them over the intercom but they accidentally talk into it and exposed themselves. I wish I could remember the episode though.

I would have dated and married Ms Fine I were to get to her first. She was broken hearted so many times in the series. If she wasn't strong and funny, she would fall into depression. So many weird guys she dated, and Maxwell's toxicity. Ms Fine is a diamond.

I agree, the more I watch this show the more I realize what an extraordinary character Fran was, and Maxwell is always just selfish, he never really rises to the occasion. He doesn’t even really have any character growth.

What does snipping off the end of a cigar do? 1:17
It's an allusion to snipping off the end of a male reproductive organ. A cigar is used in this case as a phallic symbol and Fran is making an oblique reference to not only the Jewish custom of circumcision, but the stereotype of an emotionally-injured female wanting to repay vengeance upon a male by injuring the symbol of his "emotion", because males stereotypically "only think with their little head, not their big one".

High quality cigars are wrapped all the way down to the end, leaving little to no opening to draw the smoke through. You have to snip or puncture them, so they make a specific tool for both.
But in this scene it's used as a metaphor. It represents chopping off his penis in revenge for taking back "the thing." At the time, Lorena Bobbitt was all over the news. She severed her husband's penis with a kitchen knife, while he slept, because he abused her in the worst possible ways. She said she wasn't thinking straight and didn't realize what she'd done until she fled their house, at which point she tossed it out the car window. It was found and reattached. As you can imagine, it caused a sensation and *everyone* talked about it for months. Late night shows had a field day making jokes. It remained part of popular culture for years before it started to fade.

The definition of the THING : « Mr. Sheffield finally tells Fran he loves her. They were on a plane back from Paris, and some turbulence made them believe the plane might crash. Thinking this might be his last chance, Max tells Fran he loves her and they kiss.
After they have survived the flight and Max regrets telling Fran he loves her. He explains that he only said it because he thought they were going to die, and that he didn't mean it. Rather than outright taking back I Love You, Max says he takes back what he said. Fran responds, sadly asking if he is taking back "The Thing". »
