1997 Kentucky Derby - Silver Charm : Full Broadcast

- Silver Charm came out of the West today and outdueled Captain Bodgit by the length of his gray head to win the 123d Kentucky Derby in a photo finish for Bob Baffert, the white-haired trainer who lost the Derby by a nose in a photo finish one year ago.
Baffert, who thought for a few fleeting moments last year that his star runner Cavonnier had snatched the Derby from Grindstone, had no such torment this time, at least not after they flew past the finish line. Silver Charm, a son of Silver Buck bred in Florida and raced in California, fought a tingling match down the homestrech but prevailed over the favored Captain Bodgit, the pride of the East and the winner of the Florida Derby and the Wood Memorial en route to Louisville.
It was a race filled with form that held up. It was run on a cloudy and chilly afternoon before a crowd of 141,981 at Churchill Downs, the fourth-largest crowd ever at the Derby.

My favorite horse. Just turned 29 years old. God bless him.
This is the first Kentucky Derby I ever watched! I was 8 years old! When I was 10 I got to meet Silver Charm at Three Chimneys!
NomadCollective Too cool, because I got to go to this one :) Finally got to hang with the horse in the winner's circle a year later. Silver Charm, thanks for the memories!

Greetings from Venezuela.
I encourage people to keep uploading these long-form race programs. I did not start watching horse racing until recently, and finding these famous races with all the interviews is amazing! Thank you!
One of my favorite calls ever.. "Here comes the Captain" Just classic
Thanks for this post, my favorite Triple Crown campaign since 1978!
To the entire Silver Charm team: thanks for the memories!
This is ultra cool ! A piece of history everybody must have full access to. Thanks.
Still one of my favorite horses - he was a game horse with a ton of heart.
***** Why don't you visit him in Kentucky, now that he's getting his well-deserved rest, and give him a pat? :)
Who is? Captain Bodgett was one of my favorites. If it wasn't for a career ending injury that took him out of the Belmont, he might have beaten Touch Gold and won the third Triple Crown leg.
He’s still alive at age 30.
Congratulations, champ!
Silver Charm not only bested Captain Bodgit here he did it again 2 weeks later. Silver Charm was one horse who had some fight and grit, he loved a dog fight. One of the reasons he got beat in the Belmont is because he flat out didn't see Touch Gold coming. Talk about race riding that was all McCarron. One of the more brilliant rides I have ever seen.
Silver Charm came out on Captain Bodgit.....cheating bastard
@Floyd Gibson he most certainly fucking did...wr all got eyes...karma in the Belmont tho😊
@Floyd Gibson it was a mistype you fucking weirdo.
Silver Charm got his karma in the end tho
I cried Belmont fay, that's for sure.
My favorite race horse of all time. I knew he would win the Derby when I heard his name and he didn't let me down.
Was a huge Captain Bodgit fan, thought for sure he was going to run Silver Charm down. But alas, they nearly hit into each other and S.C. held on. Was one of my best days ever as I had hit the W.A.S.S. trifecta with Favorite Trick, woulda been my best day had Bodgit won.

One of my favorite Derby intros
They must have had microphones on a jockey in the late 90s. I remember these races, you can hear the hooves moreso than you can in recent videos.
Silver Charm is the last horse still alive.. that has won the Kentucky Derby in the 20th Century January 1, 1901 - December 31, 2000
That was a very strong crop of horses in 97. But I think in the end, Free House turned out to be the best of that talented bunch.
The Lewis's are the classiest owners in thoroughbred racing.
Baffert has more needles than a hospital
Silver Charm was extremely lucky not to be disqualified. He cuts Captain Bodgit off at 50:28 and that turned out to be the race-winning move.
HE WON!! PERIOD!!! BODGIT WAS A LOSER!!!!💩💩💩💩
How young was free house when he passed away?

Silver Charm drifted out a little bit, did he interfere with Captain Bodgit?
As long as it's less than a lane it's OK, but I can't tell without a head-on shot
Looking more carefully it looks OK, it looks like half a lane and Captain Bodgit drifts in slightly too. Captain Bodgit did lose a little momentum and it cost him the race but it all looks incidental.
Just visited silver charm at old friends racehorse sanctuary
Race @ 48:32
If Silver Charm doesn't slow down Captain Bodgit's momentum we're looking at a possible dead heat
It was better if you don't write the winner. Thank you.
Owners call horses rats when don't think any one hear what they saying in long run
The win wouldn't have happened if wasn't for sliver charm he did all running never for get that
Yes Captain Bodgit was unlucky he had Alex Solis riding him should have won this derby. Silver Charm definitely came out on him and of course Gary didn't switch hands he continued right handed in the face of CB. Another aggressive better $ rider would have won that race with Captain Bodgit ( Unfortunate )
JoJoGunn Silver Charm out gutted Captain Bodgit, was not gonna let him by even if they went around again.
@@bandovreal22 he didnt need to pass him after sc came out and impeded his path. Sc would of been dq'd if bodgits jock wasnt a maroon.
If you impede a horse that is a penalty. Not to those crooked stewards.
Justice was served in the Belmont though
that was not impediment. good thing you arent a steward
@@jujudeck it was..watch again
Did the horse pass the drug test
What a easy sport, horse racing is till this day trainers and jockeys yet into hall a fame easy, using doping poor race horses since early 80 when landaluce and genuine risk became brilliant fillys in new era
Can DAVE JOHNSON PLEASE COME BACK TO CALL BIG RACES!!? HES STILL BETTER THAN ANY OTHER ANNOUNCER
It came back on the cheaters in the Belmont....
Captain Bodgit was the best horse in the field.
No the best horse was the winner
Www. Com one. Love
No offense, but your comment is absurd! Silver Charm never changed course; blame Alex on the Captain, but it's doubtful, still, the Captain would have beaten Silver Charm that day; nevertheless, Silver Charm NEVER was lucky, just good!
Silver Charm cheated in this race. Drifted out on the hard charging Captain Bodgit and slowed him down.
They stewards saw it. Everyone watching saw it. They wanted Silver Charm to win.
Glad he fucking lost the Triple Crown.
I thought that was funny
Free House turned out best of that crop
Bob has always been a cheater, would have been nice to know which of his horses was juiced up , would have made a ton of money .
Silver Charm jockey cheated in this race..you can see clearly in slow motion he came out on Captain Bodgit.
Gary Stevens known cheat on duped up horses
He did, Alex Solis maybe should have hit silver charm to force a dq, but jockeys don't do that if they can avoid it.
If alex solis had half a brain he would of lodged an objection and forced the issue. This was part of why his career went backwards after this race.
@Floyd Gibson yes the hell he did
Like to have bet punt on it at the pub try a jackpor easybet etc etc
