Thanks SO SO Much! I have always used D'Addario since beginning to play in the 80's on my acoustics. Huge fan of the Phosphor Bronze mediums for their amazing bright highs, crisp mids and boomy bottom end on my guitars. You have got me to consider switching one of my guitars to the Steel and Silk for a different sound for finger picking songs. Thanks for a great piece and thank you D"Addario for such great strings!!

Nickel Bronze been my go to for a couple of years and I don't intend on moving on. So well balanced. I definitely think they do capture the guitar's natural tone.
Another bacon and egg-cellent video, Bro... I have been using the D'Addario Nickel Bronze strings for about 3-4 years now. My favorite choice in acoustic guitar strings. Marty, you hit the proverbial nail square on the head when you said that those particular strings bring out the sound and characteristics of the individual guitar. They seem to capture the personality of the woods, resonance, age, construction and character of the guitar which gives each guitar its own unique sound and individual voice... not the sound of the strings themselves. I couldn't have said it better. I have many many guitars, and most all of them have names for their individual personalities.. I name them based on their voice, how they speak, physical characteristics, style and looks,.. and sometimes by circumstance... but voice is most important. Any halfway decent guitar player knows that you cannot judge a guitar by its looks.. the panache comes from inside... the heart, so to speak. Who wants a guitar that sounds like strings?.. Think about it... If that was the case, fret buzz would be a good thing.. and if I'm gonna get a buzz, it most "soitenly" ain't gonna be from my guitar strings. Thanks for the video. You never disappoint, Brother. Cheers. Be safe out there. Peace. Random Prophet
Thanks marty... was looking for a set of strings to make my takamine gn93ce sound a little less bright. I think I was taken by either the nickle or silk. Being a beginner you sort of steered me to silk steel.
I'd love to see a real comparison of various brands. My Elixer strings can last several months without needing a change. I changed once to Martin strings, and they only made it a few weeks. Tone isn't everything. Great video, and I'd love to see a follow up!
I been using roundwound nickel the 10-46 with the wound 3rd on my old Yamaha with humbucker soundhole and piezo UST-SBD mix separate outs.. but I love the Chromes and use them now on 3 different acoustics having ditched piezo entirely for acoustic sim off the humbucker... but not compromise the acoustic tone in my mind at all.. removed the piezo from my Dove for a thicker saddle instead. got an FXC Takamine Cedar top.. would be odd to remove that piezo
Nice video! I am a 80/20 bronze fan. I used the use the XTs but unfortunately they didn't last long at all. I tried the Elixir Nanoweb and the Daddario XS but they were too bright. So I went back to using the Elixir Polyweb acoustic 11s. Has a similar daddario tone for me and they last long. I have a Taylor 114e.
Great, great job. I love those overtones on Mr. Nickle - which makes them silver toned = har. Your setup is decent - a room mic would have been nice. Your enthusiasm is awesome to hear and your style is "augmented Gee Seventh!"
Been watching your videos fir 10 years easy, been stringing my own guitar for about 4/5 I used to use medium martins strings but since switched to d’adario I first tried the red ones ( I believe they are thicker) but really hurt when I was busking for a long time, I’ve since switched to the blue and I think they are definitely the best although I really liked the phosphor bronze strings, they sounded really changy and in your face 😊 Bless You Sir 🤘🏻
I’ve been using D’darrio phospur bronze on my semi acoustic with a pair of humbuckers for years... a few folk have said best with nickel but i find with phosphur bronze there is a warmer tone and is less harsh as the megnetic field picks up more of the steel string core only rather than the full nickel core and winding combined... 🤗 Recently changed the top E to B 18 gauge which was a 10 to 52 now 18 to 52 for a warmer tone...as i mainly use it for rhythem only anyways. Worth a try 👍🏼
Each guitar has its own unique tone. Try several types on each. I have 5 acoustics and I use 3 different types of strings. On my Martin, Martin suggests using their Marquise however John Pearse Phosphor bronze are incredible. On my Taylor the John Pearse sound flater however Elixer Phosphor bronze sound incrediable....also on my 2-Alvarez. On my Yamaha it seems to like the D'Addarios. Just my 2 cents 😎
I agree with you 100% that every guitar has its own tone and strings that sound great on one are a dud on another. I also like Elixirs on my Taylor although I am probably the only person who otherwise is not a huge fan of them. While I am always looking for the optimal sound and feel of strings for each guitar I have not yet tried the John Pearse and will now give them a try. On various acoustics I like the D’Addario EJ16s on Fender, EJ26s on Ovation, Nickel Bronze on Takamine, and Martin Monel Retros on Sigma.
Hey Marty, have you ever tried Stringjoy strings? I've been using their pure nickel Broadways on my electric guitars and I love them. Going to try their acoustic strings soon and see how they are. You should check them out.
Hello there Mr. Schwartz. Definitely a difference, phosphors and 80/20's are the loudest, silks and nickels are quieter and thinner in sound, they don't have that low end depth that the phosphors have... I personally still cannot decide between Phosphor and 80/20's, both are good for my guitar and have a nice sound. Phosphors are overall fuller and more complex, deep lows, chimey bell like highs, a strong midrange and stuff. On the other side 80/20's have that shimmer i love for fingerstyle and that overall cut, they simply cut through and do have a vintage sound, it would be a matter of experimenting and seeing for myself which molds better to my voice and which sounds better through a microphone... Greetings sir
I recently changed from DAddario Phosphor Bronze 12s to 11s in the hope of easing some fretting hand joint pain , the stings have eased the pain allowing me to play longer but I’m really disappointed in the sound, they sound bright and tinny compared to the 12s Think I might have to try the silk & steel or XS and hopefully get the best of both worlds Thanks for the review and demonstration of the difference strings can make
I’ve been interested in the Flat Top strings for a while , however , some people have claimed they go dead pretty quickly ( especially bottom E) . Have you found this to be the case?
Excellent lesson as always. I have a 900 series Zager guitar. Have you ever tried Zager easy play strings? Not sure if truly easier to play. I am still comparing those to the D’darrio and elixir phos/bronze on my Martin.
I've just started paying more attention to the strings I use, so great video, thanks. I know that Elixir strings are supposed to be good, but I've tried a couple of sets and they seem to deteriorate very quickly. The string starts to look furry where it has been picked after a week or so. I'm not a heavy strummer, so was surprised to see it. Anybody else had this problem? I'm now trying Martin Phosophor Bronze coated and they are pretty good so far.
You are the coolest guy out there I'm getting them love the sound so much thanks for your input on them you make it so much fun wish I had a gibson guitar like yours I have a yamaha apx 600 god bless take care look forward to see more you tube videos
Thank you Marty. The woman vocalist I play for wanted a softer sound. I tried a nylon string classic guitar and did not like it. I had some thoughts on different strings on my Simon Patrick dreadnought and you answered all my questions about the different types. I am going to try the Silk and Steels. Oh…..WTF?! I had not idea you could play like that and I have been following you for years. Awesome! Thank you for all you do. Much appreciated!
Yes, the thicker strings do have a lovely sound, particularly for acoustic.. but, if I can't get the chords because they're far too firm, I think the lightest strings are best. And, I can feel the strings and frets, which I found impossible with heavy strings. I really do have the hands of a child. But, I did play those flattops, on an elec-acoustic, and my friends (actual musicians) said I sounded great (I think the guitar did~) So I have considered them, and would like to know what they sound like on just acoustic. I may have to get some for this guitar, when I get my next one. YES, I can barr with the ultra-light strings, and yes, it can be extraordinarily pretty, especially for me, almost 3 months into guitar. Hey, three months ago, I would not have known what you're talking about, at all!
Of the phosphor bronze, i liked the XS the best... 80/20s sounded good on that guitar. They have an 80-20 XS now. XT's sound warmer but they sound slightly diminished from the non-coated and the XS... Which isn't necessarily a bad thing but slightly dead or strength and sound good on some guitars as long as it has plenty of tone.. kind of makes it sound like an older guitar if that's what you're after
What would you recommend for an overall type of playing? The catch is I am using a parlor guitar. I want a bit more fullness but also want to do slide. I am learning your blues lessons.
Hey Chris, I play a Taylor GC8e which is quite small, almost parlor size. I play finger style a bit and also a bit of slide. I've tried quite a few different string compositions and manufacturers. I've found D'Addario 80/20 phosphorus bronze to be my favorite followed closely by Elixer nano web (great longevity). The 80/20s seem to help my smaller guitar project volume better without the tone suffering. They help retain that brightness and shimmer I love in a parlor size guitar. That's just my two cents having tried a bunch. I know you weren't asking my advice lol.
@@Sonic_Ox thanks. I have the Gretch Jim Dandy. So I don't want it to be too bright. Although I will get there at some point. Because right now I am still technically a beginner. My barre chords have improved greatly and I am starting to pick better. Thanks to Marty. So I am not quite as good in the picking department as I am in the strumming. And my strumming is mediocre. Lol
I feel ya Chris. That Gretsch is a cool guitar. I am mostly a strummer myself. I play a lot of rhythm guitar be it electric or acoustic. I've been playing for about twelve years including a stint in a classic rock cover band. I do and always will consider myself a beginner. I'm always trying to learn. Marty is a fantastic resource. Thanks for your reply. It's fun talking with like minded musicians 🎶 .
@@Sonic_Ox same here talking to a like minded musician. I've only been doing this about 2 yrs now. I am trying so hard to get my picking hand the start finger picking. Lol I just want to do too much too soon. I just need to get down the rest of the important things 1st before I move on. Like memorize my fretboard. I do seem to have the E strings down that's to barre chords. Lol my A string needs work.
I've always found that I learn best and quickest when I play with others. Especially if they are better at it than I am. This is not difficult to find for me lol. The trick is finding those that are not SO MUCH better that I just feel overwhelmed and want to give up. My guitar journey has always been learning enough to see how much I don't know then going a bit farther. For me it's always two steps forward then one back. If you're ever in Northern Arizona maybe we could jam lol. Have a great day amigo.

Ok I had to listen to this twice and I’m still pretty set on the 80/20XT. But I’m going to try the flat top and silk and steel. They have me pretty curious but I also want to grab a another acoustic because I only have one and I want to try them on something with lacquer finish and at least a solid top because my current acoustic is neither
I just bought my first acoustic guitar 6 weeks ago. My local guitar shop recommended the 80/20 bronze, which I bought. Is there a better choice for a beginner? I've been fooling around with bass for a number of years so the pads of my fingers are good but my fingertips are pretty sore! Edit: guess I should have held my comment for the end as your recommendation for beginners is Silk & Steel...I should have known you'd make a beginner rec!

So much is set in the wood and guitar itself too.
Thanks for this. Lots of work changing strings. Good stuff.
Thank You So Much Marty... I'm A Beginner And Have Changed My Strings Twice And There Was A Difference In Them But Wasn't Sure. Now I Know 😊
What pick were you using this entire time???
What a brilliant video! Thank you for putting this out. Obviously took a great deal of time to compile.
yeah so much effort to changing strings on the same guitar
Thanks marty... was looking for a set of strings to make my takamine gn93ce sound a little less bright. I think I was taken by either the nickle or silk. Being a beginner you sort of steered me to silk steel.
I'd love to see a real comparison of various brands. My Elixer strings can last several months without needing a change. I changed once to Martin strings, and they only made it a few weeks. Tone isn't everything. Great video, and I'd love to see a follow up!
Curious to know which Martins did you use? I like D’Addarios the best but I also like the Martin Retros and Lifespan.
Wow…that’s so much work changing all of those strings bud. Thank you for the effort sir!!!!
acoustics really are a whole other ball field when it comes to playing a variety. They were my first kind of guitar too!
For reals.....lol.
Electric: 3 band eq
Acoustic: ???
What kinda strings do yall use? My personal favorite go to is D'Addario 80/20 bronze bluegrass style🥰
The amount of time and effort this took...thanks marty!
Marty is Music Gods
Been playing guitar since 1976 and never found a set of acoustic strings that I like until about a year ago. Ernie Ball Aluminum Bronze.
Yes! My favourite strings also just bought two more packs last week. Best ones I’ve tried by far lovely rich sound.
Wow thanks for that I luvd the silk n steel n fancy the flats on one aswell real interesting thanks mate
Great, great job. I love those overtones on Mr. Nickle - which makes them silver toned = har. Your setup is decent - a room mic would have been nice. Your enthusiasm is awesome to hear and your style is "augmented Gee Seventh!"
Thanks Marty. I'm still searching for acoustic strings I really like. The flat tops look interesting.
If you're searching for strings you really like it's a different guitar you should be searching for.
A Daddario commercial.
Yeah you’re right but nice to learn about different materials used and possible sounds from string variation.
Very helpful video in picking out new strings for my acoustic.
Been watching your videos fir 10 years easy, been stringing my own guitar for about 4/5 I used to use medium martins strings but since switched to d’adario I first tried the red ones ( I believe they are thicker) but really hurt when I was busking for a long time, I’ve since switched to the blue and I think they are definitely the best although I really liked the phosphor bronze strings, they sounded really changy and in your face 😊
Bless You Sir 🤘🏻
Hey Marty your channel is the best! How bout some more John Mayer lessons?
Marty made me want to play my old guitar again. Thanks dude!
Thanks for the video, Marty. I'm trying to learn slide guitar and the flat tops might be a good choice.
The seperation and clarity with the silk and steels is really impressive.
I like the aluminum bronze. Or piano wire 😆
Separation.
If anybody wants to troll me or complain don't waste your time. I have comment notifications turned off. So I'll not see your comment.
Great video. It's your playing that I really diggin! I'm coming back to try your progressions.
This video is awesome Marty.... there are tons of these out there but this one is a lot more informative. Thanks bru!
Martin phosphor bronze acoustic sp are top seller at 99% of all music stores in Kentucky
Hey Marty, have you ever tried Stringjoy strings? I've been using their pure nickel Broadways on my electric guitars and I love them. Going to try their acoustic strings soon and see how they are. You should check them out.
All this time I thought it was Dada-Rio. Thanks Marty!
I recently changed from DAddario Phosphor Bronze 12s to 11s in the hope of easing some fretting hand joint pain , the stings have eased the pain allowing me to play longer but I’m really disappointed in the sound, they sound bright and tinny compared to the 12s
Think I might have to try the silk & steel or XS and hopefully get the best of both worlds
Thanks for the review and demonstration of the difference strings can make
I’ve been interested in the Flat Top strings for a while , however , some people have claimed they go dead pretty quickly ( especially bottom E) . Have you found this to be the case?
Excellent lesson as always. I have a 900 series Zager guitar. Have you ever tried Zager easy play strings? Not sure if truly easier to play. I am still comparing those to the D’darrio and elixir phos/bronze on my Martin.
You could also use D'addario Chromes, & even Magma Phosphor Bronze Flatwounds.
My chromie 👊
I've just started paying more attention to the strings I use, so great video, thanks.
I know that Elixir strings are supposed to be good, but I've tried a couple of sets and they seem to deteriorate very quickly. The string starts to look furry where it has been picked after a week or so. I'm not a heavy strummer, so was surprised to see it. Anybody else had this problem? I'm now trying Martin Phosophor Bronze coated and they are pretty good so far.
@Dave Perris wich model of Martins?
I have never had problems with Elixir, when I put them they have the same tone from the beginning and after 2 months, also they dont loose a colour
Yea we the elite fans 👊 love ur stuff Marty 👌
The timing of this vid is perfection
I like the Nickel Bronz and also Ernie Ball PARDIUM also !! Good review !! 👍🎸
Silk and steels, love them.
Oooh, Silk and Steel sounds beautiful!
I may have to put them on my list for next time I buy strings.
They did, but then acquired a bamboo clack, & then a cricket sound.
Which isn't necessarily a bad thing but slightly dead or strength and sound good on some guitars as long as it has plenty of tone.. kind of makes it sound like an older guitar if that's what you're after
I would have liked to see a review on D'addario XT Dynacore Carbon strings.
Great video, nice work! Suggestion: pick a string type, maybe phosphorus bronze because they're most popular, then do a gauge change; 11's, 12's, 13's
What would you recommend for an overall type of playing? The catch is I am using a parlor guitar. I want a bit more fullness but also want to do slide. I am learning your blues lessons.
Hey Chris,
I play a Taylor GC8e which is quite small, almost parlor size.
Could you do a lesson on led zeppelin Bron-y-aur stomp (led zeppelin III) and/or The Rover (phisical graffiti). Or any more led zeppelin songs.
I’ve been struggling with playing acoustic guitars. I never seem happy playing acoustic. I think those Nickel Bronze make me wanna try again.
Listened to every minute. Thanks for the long comparison. You’re a natural storyteller and sharer , a special kind. And obviously you enjoy your craft, it shows. Really enjoy your stuff man, keep on picking!
I’m a PB Round Core dude, and check out John Pearse (hex) PB, very nice… and Curt Mangan Round Core PB (otw)… called the True Medium set 13-17-24-32-42-57, so medium top and low E with light G/D/A. We’ll see.
Love that slope shoulder Gibby, and the hat ✌🏻🤘🏾
Thx man ive been binge whatching all your videos and they are perfect
Hey Marty love your lessons. I’m trying to really challenge myself and was wondering if you could do a lesson on crazy on you by heart. Hope your April is starting off good. 🙂
Love you brother learning from you a long time when you tube first started
