      I mean, it does hurt in the beginning. But after a while of playing a few hours everyday your fingers just get like ”harder” or something. Can’t describe it. I myself play on a steel one and the only advice I can give to someone who wants to play on a steel guitar but can’t since it hurts, just keep going with it. Play a few hours a day. That’s the way I did it.

      This video is intended for beginners. A lot of people give up because of the pain and because they do not feel they are progressing and they think it's not worth it. I would say nylon strings are best for the very beginner because of the advantages put forward in video. And then move on to steel when fingers have built up a bit of toughness. Plus Spanish guitars have an individuality of their own musically.

    • @nathaneskin3572
      @nathaneskin3572 6 лет назад +8

      Despoina V Maybe steel but I'm also a beginner and strumming isn't terribly hard with the nylon. The difference though is that strumming with a pick is weird on nylon (because the strings are farther apart), so it's much better (for me anyways) to strum with the back of your index and middle fingernails on downstrokes and back of thumb nail for upstrokes.
      For steel most people strum with a pick.
      They're both fine to start with honestly. I really appreciate the larger spaces between the strings on a nylon.
      I'd say go with whichever you think sounds better.

    My first guitar in my teens was a steel (bronze) string, but I also owned nylon string guitars. By the time I reached my mid 20s, I bought a nice quality Guild steel/ bronze string guitar that's been with me for the last 40 years. I've been tempted to upgrade to a higher quality Martin, but my heart and soul and playing hands are melded to this one guitar. It's been with me longer than and friend or wife.
    Nylon strings are warmer, smoother and gentler, great for folk and ballads as well as classical and spanish/flamenco oriented playing. I am reminded that one of my favorites -- Carlos Santana -- has said that the only acoustic guitar he will play is c OK assical nylon. For everything else, he plays electric.
    Buy steel strings are also brighter and clearer sounding. Harmonics played on a steel sound like the ringing of a bell. And, as you mention, it's the most versatile acoustic for playing all different genres of music. You can still play classical and Spanish flavored songs as well as gentle folk ballads. But you really can't play rock and roll on a nylons stringed classical guitar. Not and be authentic anyway.
    Thanks again though for another excellent gu I tar review. The only complaint I have for your videos is that they make me want to buy a museum full of beautiful, gorgeous toned guitars I have no money for. I'm lucky 7f I can afford the gas to drive to the local music store to drool over them.

      But nice to have a breakdown of the differences. Doesn't hurt to be informed. Just don't think beginners should overthink things. Maybe find the opportunity to try out both strings. Visit a music shop and get hands on. But the best teacher is time so get cracking.

    Nylon classicals are the best to start training, including basic pieces like the Romanza played or Lagrima. The fretboard width, fret spacing and the softer impact of nylons develops good hand flexibility, stretch and positioning. You can see that you are trained in classical and that your left and right hand positioning and dexterity carries over to electrics and acoustics.

    If you are starting and have never picked up a guitar, I recommend nylon since it is far easier to play and you won't get discouraged. Steel strings are great if you start with electric since the difference is not great enough to deter you when you switch. Steel stringed acoustic for beginners is probably one of the biggest deterrents. The instrument has high action and is ready to fight those beginner errors, while an electric will allow you to play far sooner and you can focus on more important things like tone

It was easier on the fingers for the first couple of years while I learned chords, etc. The neck is usually wider at the nut than a steel string, so going from nylon to steel made me feel like I was fat-fingering a lot of chords. Also, I get what you mean when you say emotional but both convey different emotions. The nylon sounds deep and depressing but calling it emotional makes it seem like the steel string is flat and gives no emotion, when really it can also sound depressing and deep, but it mostly sounds brighter and more bold, and a lot more like an electric guitar.

    I won't have much problems about this since I have two guitars. One acoustic and one classical. I've never used the acoustic one since it's reception to me as a gift about a decade ago and it ended up stored to rust and dust with the high E string taken off. I got my classical guitar a few years later and have been practicing with it since then. Both guitars have metal strings and I am looking towards changing to nylon for the classical one. As fornthe acoustic one, I plan to restore it and change its steel stings to new ones. Two guitars with two different strings for me to genuinely feel the difference.

The strings were metal, my fingers hurt, and I had calluses after 2 days. Many people keep on saying that our strings are hard (it's acoustic-electric guitar), however, the determination for me to learn it helped me to play the guitar as happy as I am now 😃

    Nylon versus steel string guitars is like comparing apples to oranges to me. It's almost like they're two completely different instruments, not in terms of a learning curve for chords and scales, but for feel, sound and intonation. And it depends on what style of music you're into -- classical and flamenco for the nylon-string versus country and blues for the steel-string. There are exceptions, but that's the general rule. I would just as soon say get both so you have more sounds at your disposal.

    • @BertGrink
      @BertGrink 8 лет назад

      Yes, i would agree with that.

    • @jgrossma
      @jgrossma 8 лет назад +10

      They're not "like" different instruments, they *ARE* different instruments. They're built differently, they're strung differently, the neck and bridge geometry are different, they feel different, technique of playing them is different, and they're typically used for different forms of music. Yes, if you can play one, you can play the other (like synthesizer and piano), but they're just NOT the same thing.
      Personally, I love nylon string guitars, and I'm a strong advocate for them, but I'd say the "better" instrument is the one the beginner WANTS to play! If you want to play classical guitar or flamenco music, you should be playing nylon. ANY fingerstyle guitar tends to work well on nylon. On the other hand, if you want to play more conventional pop, or like using a pick, steel string is the way to go. I'd also add that for CHILDREN who have "softer" fingers and are just starting out, nylon (no pick) is easier, and recommended. That's true for adults as well, albeit somewhat less so.

      Miss K no one ever said you couldn’t; only that it becomes uncomfortable to play for long durations. There are no rules that say you can’t play finger style on steel strings; only guidelines and you don’t have to follow them if you don’t want to. Same as bass; you can slap it, play it with only your fingers or jam out with a heavy pick. It’s the player and how he wants to extract the sound from the instrument.

    • @tsuukkii

      Very different actually, the fret spacing, on a nylon as said is bigger than an steel one, giving people with small hands a very big disadvantage, the nylon is harder to replace strings since you have to tie them to the bridge, and the body is also very small, compared to the steel one. You can’t adjust the truss rod on nylon because, well it doesn’t have one. And therefore handles less tension than a steel. I would probably prefer a guitar with a classical body, with an acoustic bridge, a truss rod, acoustic neck and a cutaway. It’s like soy sauce and egg, no one thought of it, but it’s good together.

      @@smolchungus9213 Glad to hear it? It's more about tension on the neck joint over time, and with all of the strings. A whole set of steel-core strings will pull a neck right off nylon body, eventually. Steel string guitars are not too pricey second hand, like craigsl*st. If you want one, go for it, with a side-gig or something. I'm sure someone who needs it is itching for that cash right about now.

    • @Malakith

      Never put regular steel strings on your classical guitar, it'll damage or downright break your guitar. There is way to much tension on steel strings, classical guitars don't have the reinforcements that steel-string guitars have. If you want to have a little of both worlds on your classical guitar, you should take a look at John Pearse Folk strings. These are great hybrid strings and have low tension.

      Yup, it's tough. I use an Ibanez AEF18LE (because I'm left-handed -AEF18E it's the standard) . I comes with steel strings (though I changed them to nylon and so far so good, just make sure the nylon strings fit nicely and are not too big to fit in the cuts). It was around $450 wen I bought it back in 2012 in Puerto Rico. I think it's worth the price. It sounds very nice when acoustic and when you plug it in it sounds even better (I used to play with it at church every Sunday and it does sounds sweet). It's a very study guitar yet it looks gentle.
      If I were you, I'd try to aim for a guitar around $400-$600. That's not too cheap nor too expensive, I had to save money for a couple of months but it was worth it.

    Nylon is more versatile, and at a higher level, way more demanding technically. Its meant to be played the authentic styles, Flamenco, Classical, ..etc, while Steel is more akin to rock and folk music.

    • @kylers539

      It is more demanding, but steel strings are much more versatile.

    • @jgrossma
      @jgrossma 8 лет назад +1

      Anything that "can" be played on a nylon string "can" be played on a steel string, and vice versa. There are electric nylon string instruments, and there are nylon string guitars with cutaways, body/neck joint at 14th fret, and even acoustic width bridges and necks. Its just a question of which is BETTER for a given piece.
      I'd say in GENERAL the TYPE of music that's usually played on classical guitars (eg classical and flamenco) is more technically challenging then most acoustic guitar music, but of course there are plenty of examples of technically hard acoustic stuff too!

    • @jgrossma
      @jgrossma 8 лет назад +1

      Hardcore nylon players almost invariably play with their fingernails, or with synthetic fingernails, which are pretty much like picks glued to each finger! Tonally, a pick on nylon isn't THAT different, but using the fingernails gives more control over tone and, of course, makes the nylon fingerstyle techniques possible. EG, I've never seen anyone play a convincing tremolo with contrapuntal bass line using a pick. .. though that technique with nails is bread-and-butter for flamenco, and is used sometimes in classical playing as well.

    • @jgrossma
      @jgrossma 8 лет назад +1

      I don't know about that. With only a few exceptions, pretty much anything that can be played on one can be played on the other. Each of the two instruments have techniques that work better for their type.
      For example, if you want to BEND strings, steel is much better. You can bend them further, and keep them in tune better with steel. You probably shouldn't bend nylon at all (though some do get away with it). If you want to play acoustic SLIDE guitar, again, the extra sustain and tension of steel strings makes that possible. Although you "can" do it on nylon, overall effect (IMO) isn't nearly as good, and I don't know any "serious" slide or blues player who uses nylon. Sustain tends to be better on acoustic guitars, though in practice, this probably doesn't really "matter".
      In contrast, nylon facilitates all sorts of fingerstyle techniques, both because of the softer strings and their wider spacing. For example, rasgeado works better on nylon, as do tremolos. As a pure FINGERSTYLE instrument, I think nylon stands out.
