Nylon guitars are either for beginners or absolute pros
Ya
Lmao You're right
True
@@37yearsago24 Having said that lots of artists like Willie Nelson play the Nylon Acoustic becuse they love the mellow sound
I’m neither, I just love the mellow tone.
The pain is temporary
But music is forever
I saw this same comment in his guitar video 🤨
❤️❤️❤️
You seem to hate the Spanish guitar judging by your stare at it 😂😂
and i agree with him , the spanish sounds dull ,
breakfastbuddy5 so the classic guitar is for spanish music? because i’m trying to buy a guitar but i wanna play modern pop rock so what to buy?
@@cherrydollray tho u can try electric as well
Yes obviously he doesn't play classical guitar 😂
Lol I agree
The sound of nylon strings is incomparable, it's richer but yeah harder to play as well
No bends
Absolutely but if u need a bright metallic sound it has to be steel strings
too quiet and boring tbh
@@deanallen6229 neither on steel strings, but you can get somehow the sound with slides depending on the bending sound you want to reach
@@Healmyheart68 yeah, different type of guitar for different genres and sounds
Started with steel strings it hurted alot but it was worth .
September Bob same I still find it better to start on nylon but now I have my Calluses
Maybe i mean i have calluses even before i even play the guitar but its ur choice m8
September Bob so I just started on the acoustic guitar with no background experience. I was just wondering how long it took for you to develop calluses since I have a steel string acoustic and right now it somewhat hurts to practice for longer than 20 minutes.
@@Kei2Vi I developed calluses 6 months after
But I played a short time but often like 2 times a day /10min to 5 min.
Zen Kurosokie it took me about 2 months it’s painful but it is worth it to play steel strings imo
This is a biased review. He even plays the nylon guitar super softly and with no energy to make a point. They are both good, depends what you want to play. Ballads, romantic songs, pop I prefer nylon. Rock and metallic sound, to me, sounds better with steel. Fingerpicking, use nylon. With a pick, I use steel. But, I think most people are biased. I prefer nylon.
Hi, I'm doing studies on guitars and after reading your comment I wanted to know if there were any videos you could recommend that have a more fair comparison.
@@IceBeamTetsuno It was a fair comparison. A lot of people just like classical. The problem is as Andy said, most songs that HE teaches will sound better on a steel string. I should not say better, but more familiar. Or at the very least close to the sound Andy is producing, which is important for a beginner.
Classical is absolutely beautiful, but the techniques that make nylon great are not anything a beginner will be doing for a while--like fingerpicking. By the time you're ready to fingerpick, you will either be ready to buy another guitar and/or know you prefer classical guitars.
The thing is also, there are different techniques that classical guitar players use that Andy doesn't teach because that's not the style most people today are learning for pop/rock songs.
Andy gave great advice, but that doesn't mean if you want to play classical you should avoid it. No, just know that you're not going to get the same sound as Andy does in his videos. Nor will you be taught what is traditional "classical guitar." Traditional Classical guitarists hold their guitars totally differently than steel string guitar players typically do. That's not a huge issue in playing, but you should know that. In fact, it's very easy to tell someone who started on classical guitar based on the technique they use on steel. Traditionally it's taught somewhat differently.
Couldn't agree more. Was thinking just the same
What if someone wants to just play songs like John🥰Denver’s songs?
Agree 100%
I started out with a steel string acoustic guitar but eventually gravitated to classical guitar. I like both types, But If I have only one guitar to use in my life, it will be a well made classical guitar.
It depends on the music you intend to play. Nylon is warm and romantic. I play a lot of Latin American music. It sounds dreadful with steel strings.
American Yacht which one should i get if i like to play songs like sam smith
@@adilshah6664 Is that a serious question? Buy a computer or just play ringtones over and over. There are no instruments in his songs and arguably his voice is an instrument but might as well be replaced with a synth with the amount of effects that are used.
Setekh why are u bullying me?
@@adilshah6664 Am I? I'm not even sure if you're trolling or not. I found your answer though: a keytar.
Adil Shah acoustic
My rule of thump for the guitar to start on is the one that suits your musical preference the most. Every guitar type its own has pros and cons so the deciding factor is the type of music you like.
If you are unclear about your musical preferences, I highly suggest starting on a steel string acoustic. IMO it’s kind of in between the electric and classical guitars; like a middle ground, simply put. It will be easier to switch to either should you find steel string acoustics not to your musical taste.
I think everyone should begin on the spanish guitar. Everything is harder on that thing so when you can play good on the nylon strings, everything else will be much easier
And you'll save yourself some blood on the e string
the thicker neck is actually worth it so that you'll make less placement errors and your fingertips won't touch other strings as well. Real life saver for fingerstylists.
until somoene hears you play guitar and hands you a guitar at a party and you realize you're struggling to play because the fretboard is a lot smaller than you're used to hah.
At least in the US, steel strings are A LOT more common. So much better to learn on steel for that reason a lone IMO, at least in the US.
@@RogerThat902 Nah. Depends on the music you want to play. I prefer classical/film scores, so I'm sticking with the nylon, and I'm in the US :)
the problem with nylon string guitars is if your finger is barely touching the next string it wont even make a sound when you strum, its frustrating
I would add that if you have big hands/fingers, you will find a classical is much easier to play, as you can play chords clearly without accidentally muting them. The extra spacing between strings helps me a lot!
My first guitar was a classical one with nylon strings, it sounded good but the neck was too chunky and had no inlay dots... that's why I got the steel strings guitar !
Thanks for your video 🤗
i started following your beginner lessons recently and it took me wayy to much time to realize i actually had a classical guitar and that's why mine sounds different🤣, looking into getting steel string now. thanks for the explanation it helped a lot
He really hates classical guitars....
Calm down buddy
Ya sad but true
I just started playing at the age of 60. I went with a Taylor GS Mini mahogany. I’m also left-handed, so I had to listen to many of them on RUclips and then order it online. I am enjoying it very much and how it feels compared to bigger acoustic guitars that I tried in local stores. So, I’m in full agreement with you! Thank you. New subscriber. 👍👍
Did you like the guitar? Was thinking about getting the exact same one
This does seem bias cuz nylon is great in its own way , doesn’t sound good with a pic it sounds good when playing with fingers
To me it sounds good with a pick too
Domestic Cat ya it all depends how you play it ! I think the example he gave wasn’t a good example of what the nylon strings are capable of with a pick!
It sounds great, but for the type of songs he teaches, most people are going to want a steel string. Classical is fantastic, but it's not as good for the type of classic rock/pop songs he teaches IMO.
Yes it sounds better with your fingers
I love finger style.
Classical music and flamenco is gorgeous and so beautiful
And so much harder to learn
There are so many techniques into it
Yes, and that's probably why, as he said, beginners should avoid UNLESS they really want to play that style of music. I thought he gave great advice.
@@RogerThat902 not really classical guitar can play other styles mostly fingerstyle is better on classical
I put some nylon strings on the old guitar I found. I have to say, it is much softer on the fingertips and it stays in tune perfectly. so no issues there at all
Thank you Andy. You made up my mind makes much sense!
"Nylons are harder to use"
**Laughs in hybrid strings**
What are hybrid strings ?
@@malakmedhat9905 half nylon half steel
@@user-yo1sc6dq2e ohhh thx for telling me
@@user-yo1sc6dq2e Well, as far as I know, the nylon strings used in classical guitar has steel core (at least first three)
Woah
wow the positivity towards steel then the straight tearing into the nylon lmao
Hi buddy my first guitar was Classic guitar n u tought me how to play it so well thank you
Now I have no guitar n i hope i can buy a acoustic guitar soon n thanks a lot 👊👊👊🎸
Good video IMHO. Your points on plus and minus are thought-provoking as well. I've messed about with a classical guitar at a friends home some time back and definitely remember the struggle to make the chords and also get any decent tone. But that may well just be because I am crap.
Thank you so much..this video really helped me a lot❤️
I was worried having a steel string guitar cause people told it will be hard to learn as a beginner . but after watching your video I am literally relieved.
You're playing the hardest one, particularly if it's not a super nice guitar (my first one wasn't). You're going to find going to anything else a lot easier on your hands. Just wait till you play an electric. Your hand is going to be confused at how easy it is haha.
which guitar best for beginner?the nylon string guitar or steel string guitar?cuz i really like to learn how to play guitar but i do not know which guitar i will buy esp im just a beginner who wants to learn play guitar
@@chrisnielly5620 read the above comment of @Roger That I think its the best answer
This video was super helpful. Thank you so much!
Nice video and your pointed out points between these 2 guitars are very true. Best wishes to you for the coming years and keep rocking. Take care and be safe God bless 🎵❤️👍
I never had tuning problems with my nice Ortega Nylon String acoustic. It also has a thin body and the neck as well. Its about what kind of nylon string guitar you pick. My Ortega costs 400 Euros.
Hey Andy I saw a Faith Fasce Electro acoustic guitar 2 days ago. I want to buy it. is it good for the price or should I go to a higher price.
Thanks for answering all my questions. I'm a beginning learner. And just subscribe to your channel to see if I can pick up a few lessons. Again thanks for all your help.
Clarence
Thanks! I enjoy your explanations.
This was very biased
Start with a steel string. I brought a semi decent classical guitar after a year. As I wanted to learn some fingerstyle stuff which sounded best on a classical guitar. But I mainly use steel strings unless I’m performing something like tears in heaven or classical gas for example
Brilliant video Andy. I was going to buy a nylon strung guitar , but listened to what you have said will go with your recommendation
So Andy, what would be your recommendation for a basic steel string guitar for someone who wants to play fingerstyle? I'm a novice and the thinner neck guitars are kind of tough due to finger spacing. What nut wide and smaller body guitar would be good?
Heyllo!!! I wasnt looking for a lesson, just spent hours tonite all over the web, comparing makes and models.then eeeeerrrrch..b9rakes!! Andy!! Like running into a familiar face in a new neighborhood..comforting and as always encouraging.. Thanks
I'm learning to play the electric since Summer 2019 and was looking into buying an acoustic for some months now, but couldn't really decide between the nylon and steel strings. Now I know that I'll stick to a steel string acoustic. Thank you!
Congratulations 🎉
Hi, I have a question: Im a weak intermediate player, have been fingerstyling with my acoustic for a while, but I really love the sound of a classical guitar. Never tried playing it, and my question is this: if I buy a classical and get used to it, AM I GONNA BE STRUGGLING TO PLAY ACOUSTIC IF SOMEONE SUDDENLY GIVES IT TO ME AND ASKS TO PLAY SOMETHING?
yes
I recently playing a Fender CN-140 in a store - which has a narrow (43 mm) neck and concert body shape. In other words it plays like a steel string guitar with a very easy action. I think it might be a great choice for a beginner. Very comfortable to play all around. About $400 BTW.
As far as not sounding like the beloved recordings.... Most beginner songs aren't currently on the pop charts.
Also the soft nylon voicing might make practice more pleasant for others in the household. Just saying.
Thanks for the video. I am looking to buy my first guitar under €100 budget. What would you suggest?
I use classical guitars because I play a lot of spanish songs
My first couple years ago was a nylon strings... and while I lost interest a few months later, I recently picked guitar again, now on a steel string... my other had an unfortunate accident while stored... fell on the floor and neck snapped... anyway... Man I can't use a pick... so used to my fingers... and it isn't even proper fingerstyle/finger picking I need to work on that...
Never had issues with C chord sunce it was travel sized xD
So what happened
Can someone sort this out for me - are ALL SIX strings made of ONLY NYLON - as in not nylon wound in steel? Or is that just the GBE strings?
What type of acoustic guitar do you recommend for new beginners? Is it important with a brand name? Thanks.
I need to get a smaller acoustic 3/4 length one mine is big it's a really good guitar with 79.99
I need a 3/4 one it would make it easier.
Which one would people recomend
I've always played with nylon which is more mellow.
My steel string guitar sounds harsh.
I have a Fender Kingsman Acoustic guitar with steel strings. Thanks for covering string swapping. l was contemplating switching my steel strings out for nylon ones. I’m glad l didn’t after watching your video. 👍🏼
😎 🎶
5:50 note from a 2 meter tall guy: I got the big one. Small one feels lost in my arms :)
Thanks for all the good works Andy.
I started with nylon (very similar to one in the video). When playing chords i like more playing with hand instead of a pick. To me it sounds more spanish-like, i feel like it sounds more dynamic and allows me to experiment more. My only regret is having the full sized one. The bare chords are very very hard to learn and even more when in a song. One day gonna replace it with 3/4.
Huge respect for all of you guys who went through the pain of thin steel strings.
What about the sound outcome using Steel strings guiter? Which is more Sweeter in terms of sound?
Thanks that was really informative I play ukulele and have just started learning guitar ( found in the wardrobe) it must have been a nylon string guitar going by your description of the tuners but has steel strings on it , your right the C chord is really difficult to get.
There are steel-string guitars with a slotted headstock and backwards tuners as well. Some parlor guitars, for example. Taylor makes some of their large sizes with slotted headstocks as well, they claim it has an influence on the sound.
Plz make a video on guitar action and how to adjust guitar action
So sir which is better from sound ?
I've been playing on a guitar my mom got as a gift a long time ago, I literally just found out its made for nylon strings and I've been playing it with steel strings this whole time
Agree 100%. I’ve only had steel string guitars. Family bought my daughter a cheap little nylon sting uke, and while it’s adorable, the nylon slips so much and it won’t stay in tune for longer than a few minutes, it really put her off the whole thing understandably. I went out on a limb and got her a mini fender telecaster, steel stringed, electric etc. Her keenness has sky rocketed, sometimes she asks to plug into my amp and use some of my peddles. I try and let her plug in at a minimum because I feel she should get practice in without, considering it’s an electric. If she stays keen I’ll get her a nice junior size Acoustic to she can really get her teeth into it. Thanks for the video.
Jojo Sings my ukulele stays in tune and it sounds amazing and it's well easier
Jojo Sings , cheap instruments are off putting and discouraging whether they are guitars or ukulele. For ukulele won’t get anything playable for less than us$60 approx. anything less is a toy not an instrument
All ukes have nylon strings, and yes they stretch a lot when new. Keep a snark tuner clipped to the neck. Once stretched in mine stays in tune better than anything.
David LaFerney I had no idea that all ukes had nylon strings, well I learn something new each day, thanks so much! Perhaps it’s the instrument itself then as oppose to strings, as someone mentioned above in this thread, the really low priced ones are basically a toy and I agree with that. I might go on a limb and purchase a decent one that is designed to be a true instrument. Thanks again for teaching me something new! I’m a guitar player, ukes are alien to me lol.
David Mc I do believe you have hit the nail on the head there, it was gifted to her from grandparents, brand new for £15. I think the issue might be the instrument as oppose to a string issue. It does the job, just about, but it certainly feels more on the spectrum of a toy rather than a true instrument. I really appreciate your help, because at this young age, that feeling of discouragement can stay with them for many years. Thanks again, I’m off to buy a mid range decent uke! 👍👍
I all ready bought a full size steel string guitar is it good for beginners
Coco was the reason I decided to learn guitar, I did not know a thing about music before watching it but I always had that dream that one day I will be able to play a musical instrument. I was saving up for a new phone but Coco made me go for an Ibanez guitar instead. a life-changing movie for me
What if i wanted a very medieval ish tone, should i go for nylon stringed guitar?
What is the brand of nylon strings guitaryou are usind. Is it Carlos guitar?
I first ever touched a REAL ACOOUSTIC guitar when I was 11(that was 2 and a half years ago on the Febuary of 2017) and I got the BIGGER steel string one and acutally even upto now (I'm 13 now) the guitar is a bit big for me. The reason was the guitar was a surprise and I didn't get to choose my liking. But I can still play it well and still stands as the ONLY guitar I ever owned in my life.
Now, am having an acoustic guitar nylon strings, can i change the nylon to steel strings on the same guitar? if its possible what do i have to change apart from the nylon strings?
no. the wood is made specifically for each type.
If you're just learning note positions, what does it matter which type of guitar you learn on?
It doesn't. The notes are the same on all guitars. Most important is that you play on a guitar that you like.
I have a nylon stringed acoustic, honestly I didn't know there were any other types at the time my teacher just told me to get that type so I did LMFAO, I've been using that for the past year now and I'm getting my first electric next month!
I have my dad’s guitar from the 80s it has both 3 nylon and 3 steel strings. Which I don’t know what to change coz the steel ones are worn out?!
Which one is better for finger freestyle but I Eldon want to be limited to any generic
Any help
Hi Andy, I am going to buy Steel string acoustic as recommended by you. But which size I should ask for.. what is mean by travel size .. if I say travel size will shopkeeper will understand or I should say like medium/small /standard??
You can try them at the store and see what's most comfortable for you ! I would recommend to not buy one too big, but also the shape can make the difference ! It's really about how you feel when you play it ! Also travel guitars can be guitar of which you can take off the fretboard to help you travel in an easier way. I hope you've bought one by now ! 😊
Hi Andy, thanks for all your help, could you possibly do a tutorial on Taylor Swift, song, Tim Mcgraw. Thanks
Thanks for your thoughts.
Sir iwant to buy acoustic guitar which brand guitar is best , what about faith guitar?
Is it okay to put nylon strings on an acoustic guitar?
Why does my plectrum sound odd on my steel string guitar
Question: I like the sound of the upper 3 strings when steel but very much dislike the sound of the bottom 3 made of steel. Any suggestions what to buy in that case?
Two years later, I'm curious, did you end up getting a bass guitar?
I am very much a beginner and i just got my strings replaced and i think the guy said he gave me strings between nylon and string so what kind of string is that
Acoustic for the win. However I preferred owning a classical due to
strings not having to rust and it's less maintenance for me. I'm an
electric guitar player primarily and I use the classical for some
plucking stuff.
Hey I've got a matte finish guitar like that one, please make a vid stating the difference between matte and gloss
which guitar best for beginner?the nylon string guitar or steel string guitar?cuz i really like to learn how to play guitar but i do not know which guitar i will buy esp im just a beginner who wants to learn play guitar
I would recommend you to chose the type you want by choosing what type of music you want to play. Though, you can play any song on both, the sound it just a bit different 👍
Thanks 👍
I have a nylon guitar
Me too
Same
The video I was looking for, theres a huge difference
Does the size of the hole in the guitar affect the sound?
You make both of them sound great doe
Does steel string acoustic guitars have a slotted headstock??? My guitar looks like a steel string guitar except for the headstock It is slotted
any recommendation for guitar sizes for 4'10 person? i have short fingers too
does anyone know what steel string guitar he uses in this video?
Can you like use open major and minor chords and a pick to strum on a classical guitar
I love the sound of clasical guitar but its harder for my small.hand to hold the farther apart fret
What is the song u played at the beginning of the video? Pls tell me!!!!
I have both types of guitars and am changing a couple of my acoustics to nylon because I much prefer the sound. In fingerstyle, steel strings sound like playing the piano holding the pedal down. (in my opinion)😆
I would only say that the classical guitar that you have is pretty vintage to your steel strings.
Thanks!!! you just answered both questions I had as to which guitar to buy. I'll go find a 3/4 steel string acoustic! Thanks!!!
I'm going for the same too...which brand do you suggest?
except you got misinformated a lot lol
Willie Nelson music also sounds great on a Nylon String Acoustic cause he plays one.
That was my problem, i got a full sized guitar... i never stuck with it, realise now it's because the guitar is too big. think i may trade it in for a smaller one and try again
I bought a baritone ukulele (strung like a guitar's 4 top strings. DGBE). The size and nylon strings make for much longer practice sessions. I periodically take what I've learned and practice on my steel string guitar. My fingers are getting much stronger because I'm able to practice much longer.
@@chrislevad339 hmm you replied to this 2 year old comment and it brought back memories, thanks ... I did pick up that guitar again last year and now I play it a lot more. Practice really does make it better.
If I'm not interested in using a plectrum and only fingers which guitar would you suggest?
I had both. Started with steel string and then classical. If you want to progress finger style I would go with classical. Not necessarily classical music. Many jazz and other styles use nylon string. Also nylon string much easier on the fingers.
There is also a “crossover” guitar which has more of a steel string neck with nylon strings
Andy can you please make a tutorial for Patience by Shawn Mendes? Thanks
Okay made the first mistake already... Bought the largest size judging by my fairly huge size and now I can't see the finger position without breaking my back. :(
Tilt it a lil won't break your back
When’s the next unsolved mysteries video coming?

is a steel string acoustic guitar the same as a western guitar or is there a difference?
Yeap it's the same
