Why YOU Should Watch Durarara!!

  • Durarara!! is a 2010 anime from Aniplex, and probably one of the best anime to recommend. That's because Durarara!! (DRRR) has something for everyone; wild and crazy action, overt comedy, psychological horror and philosophical speeches, and slice of life all in between. The anime can't truly be described by one genre. It follows a main trio; Mikado, Kida, and Anri, three high school students whos' lives get turned upside down in the crazy Tokyo district Ikebukuro. From Celty the headless rider, to Izaya the information broker, or from one gang like the yellow scarves to another like the dollars, the anime wastes no time introducing, and utilizing, many wild aspects. With a stellar ost, well written characters who embody core themes, and an unparallel exploration of daily life, all wrapped up in a 24 episode package, Durarara!! makes for a great series to watch, casually or for something more.

For me the first 3 episodes were the 10/10 episodes. But admittedly when I watched it for the first time one year prior to when I gave it a second chance, it was really boring and I dropped on 2nd episode. But smh second time rewatching those two episodes got me hooked in so much with it's unique narrative and atmosphere. Idk, it somewhat resembles Monogatari for me

Honestly, Shizuo is one of the most underrated anime badasses of all time.
The strength of the average character in the show is surprisingly realistic and reasonable-which highlights how honest to God absurd Shizuo is as someone that's SUPPOSED to be a human.
A human even monsters are terrified of.
He's literally the Doom Guy of Ikebukuro, and nobody puts respect on his name.

One of the most unique anime out there. The story is on point, the animation is top tier and the characters are believable as far as their "human" side goes, making them relevant, in spite of the "supernatural" side. It just shows how so many characters can be introduced by linking them to unexpected occurrences and circumstances that add a whole new layer to the seemingly ordinay city vibe. Brilliant.

Durarara was one of my biggest stepping stones when getting into anime, as someone whos father had netflix and back when Drr was on it watched all of it in one sitting. It gave me a lot of insight that I didnt know it was until rewatching series this year for nostalgia sake. it genuinely taught me the biggest theme you mentioned, about living in the present is better then waiting for what comes in the future. I dont truly remember what first lured me to the series, maybe it was Celty? Maybe it was the name of the anime itself. But one thing for sure, I did not regret watching it back then. I still dearly love the characters and setting, maybe one other rewatch is in order

Durarara!!! has a lot of concept characters. It treats ideas for characters like a science fiction might treat its premise. A lot of great science fiction comes from taking one relatively simple premise and really thinking through all of its implications, which then reflect back on what exists in the real world. Durarara!!! is probably the best thing I've ever seen for this type of character writing, and it really helps characters who might not all get a ton of screen time pop and be memorable.
I know you umm, uhh, kind of touched on that already. But it's a classification of how to write characters that exists in my head which I wanted to get out.
Hunter X Hunter does this too, but not to the same degree.

7:06 especially when it comes to Izaya lol, the anime Izaya and novel Izaya seem quite different. The novel really brings our his complexity as a character.
Anyway drrr is worth watching for the humor alone if you're not keen on philosophy and morals, the characters (honorable mention to Shingen, I love this weird dad man) crack me up every time.

I really liked the first season a lot. The second (split into 3 parts) was a huge letsdown to me however. These are the main reasons:
To many characters / unrelevant storylines: the little Awakusu Girl, the blonde russian assasin, Izayas sisters, Shizuos Brother and his spouse. All of these characters are new (or get much spotlight only) in the second season .
Their story lines and characters feel weaker than what season 1 did. They take way too much od the original casts screentime and they dont seem to add too much to the story .
Izaya and Shizuo. The sister and brother (incest ew) . Celty and Shinra. Simon and the russian Sushi. Mikado, Masami and Airi. The dollars, yellow scarfes and blue gang. These were the keyplayers of season 1. That worked . Everyone was connected, had history and business with others and EVERY action impacted the plot.
Izaya constantly manipulating and scheming everyone in this city to brew Conflict . The meaningful storylines of Celty and Shinra, the main trio, Shizuo and Izaya. The atmosphere of the city, the weirdness and that greaz unique concept. Thats what i cherished about season 1, it was something special.
Season 2 still has some qualites of season 1, but it tunes down a LOT on them tbh. Way to many characters, not necessary or more importantly Interesting plotlines.

I remember this anime being very boring and dialogue heavy.

There are some sections of heavy dialogue, but I found them engaging because they helped the exploration of its core concepts and characters

i love this anime! i first watched it when i was 7 at like 2am on adult swim 😅 later on when i was 11 i found the manga in my library and even netflix finally had it too. i’m so sad netflix took it off i used to watch it all the time. it was my go to in the background 🫶

I missed the era of catching random anime on late at night, but I wish I had those memories haha
