Before diving into that exciting October day in 1984 in Italy, it´s critical to understand who Bernard Hinault was. This formidable cyclist stood out for his courage and aggressiveness on the bicycle. In 1979, after his defeat during the previous year in the 1978 Giro di Lombardia in the sprint to Moser, Hinault had already made it clear that he wouldn´t be content to be a passive spectator in the races. On the bicycle, he was fearless and passionate, and his aggressive style often baffled his rivals.
But what makes this victory even more memorable, is the rivalry Hinault had with the Italian riders. In the 1980s, Italian cycling was at its peak, with great riders, such as Francesco Moser, Giuseppe Saronni or Silvanno Contini, dominating the races. The rivalry between Hinault and these Italian cyclists was epic, and the 1984 Giro di Lombardia was a crucial chapter in this history.
