China, US pave way for Xi-Biden summit following senior-level talks in Beijing

Senior Chinese and US officials have started paving the way for another Xi-Biden summit, following talks between Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and US national security adviser Jake Sullivan in Beijing on August 28, 2024. It was the first visit by a White House national security adviser to China in eight years. Sullivan’s trip is widely seen as laying the groundwork for another summit between Chinese President Xi Jinping and his US counterpart Joe Biden, who will step down in January 2025. Chinese state media said the officials covered a wide range of topics in two days of “candid, substantive and constructive” talks, which included an agreement for discussions between military commanders to try to prevent conflict in the Taiwan Strait and the South China Sea. The White House said the leaders of the two countries were expected to talk on the phone “in coming weeks”. Sullivan wrapped up his trip to Beijing on August 29 following talks with Zhang Youxia, vice-chairman of China’s Central Military Commission. Zhang is the most senior military official to have met a US official from the Biden administration.
