  • This is the only way to hear the original HIT MONO MIX of this song, as all of Dunhill's MONO master tapes were destroyed in the early '70s to make room for storage. As a result, only the stereo album versions of these songs are readily available today.
    Debuted 7/68
    #2 Hot 100
This is the original HIT MONO MIX released on ABC Dunhill D-4138 when this was a HUGE hit on AM Top 40 radio stations in the summer and fall of '68.

I have original stereo version rca victor made in usa from -68, but when i heard mono version i had to buy it. Ordered it right through the disklog from the UK. Shipping to Sweden 2-3 days, then I'll listen to it.

I prefer the album version. This version's truncated.

@@applescruff1969 Even the stereo masters may have been destroyed in the 2008 Universal studios fire.

@@WedgePee Possibly. That fire took out some classic films and even a theme park ride.

@@applescruff1969 Yes, that was King Kong Encounter, next door to the master vault! A propane tank for special effects exploded, as can be seen in the original news report.
I think the Video Vault only had positive prints and hard drives with digital backups, not original camera negatives.
I’d say the fire was one of the worst tragedies of all time even though nobody died. We didn’t even know about the potential losses until 2019!
