    I am 9 months post-stroke & now require 10 hours of sleep per night plus an hour nap every afternoon to function... fortunately, my sleep is much better since my stroke! 🙏😴💤

    Elyse, I'm officially three years out from my stroke.Thank goodness I made it, but it is still frustrating. My mind is over stimulated all of the time. Even If I take naps my mind is spiraling. I do live in the brightest and loudest city in the U.S. so it's a little difficult, I do keep my blinds closed to try and sleep. Thanks again for your advice.

    I definitely experienced problems with my sleep after stroke initially. I was only getting about 4-5 hours a week until I recognized I needed to change my habits and go to bed to get proper rest bc I read a few articles saying sleep increases recovery. Thankfully I am now averaging 7-8 hours of sleep. To get to this point I had to force myself to go to bed around 10:30pm. I am 8 years post stroke. I did a lot of work to figure how I got to the place of stroke and knew I needed to make serious changes so I changed my diet too removing most all processed foods and replaced it with mostly Whole Foods which I am currently still enjoying. It made a huge difference in my sleeping schedule too.

    It wouldn’t be so bad if sleep wasn’t made so irregular during stroke treatment-
    When I was treated for stroke almost three months ago, I was constantly poked, prodded, and examined through most of the time (even at night), with nothing in terms of support for the sleep, either medical or psychological (it was a VERY stressful time).
    I’m talking less than three hours a night for the three months, even when I was in acute physical therapy.
    While I understood why this was done (to see if I was still alive), my sleep patterns were irrevocably changed as a result- getting more than seven hours of sleep was a blessing these nights, and I could count the number of nights I’ve had more than nine hours on one hand, and that was aided with melatonin, which I take 3mg nightly. I never did this before.
    In my opinion, there needs to be more done to help stroke victims with regard to sleep for overall health, which was sorely lacking in my case.

      You make a great point. Sleep is so important and sometimes it get pushed aside in the acute phases because so much is going on, but that can even create a habit of a poor sleep cycle.
      Sleep is so important in stroke recovery bc your brain needs time to recover, and I def think sleep hygiene is an area that will grow in the future, bc mental fatigue is so prevalent with stroke recovery

    I think I have hypersomnia. Last night I slept close to 11 hours. I do have sleep apnea, but I had that before my stroke. I’ve talked to all my doctors and they tell me that so long as I’m not groggy during the day it’s OK to sleep as much as my body needs it, but I think 11 hours might be overdoing it a bit lol

    • @PostStrokeOrg
      @PostStrokeOrg  Месяц назад +2

      @heatherguill9614 haha oh my word, that gave me chuckle! I think that's a good point. If you don't feel bad the next day after getting lots of sleep or feel that it impacts your day-to-day, then go for it. We all have different sleep needs, too. I feel my best when I get 9 hours of sleep whereas my husband does great with 8. Although sleep has definitely been up and down since our little one was born haha. I'm NOT getting 9 hours lol

    • @heatherg-thatsme
      @heatherg-thatsme Месяц назад +1

      @@PostStrokeOrg i’m sure it’s been a long time since you’ve gotten 9 hours of sleep since your little one came along. I do think that’s a great thing you pointed out in your video is that everyone requires a different amount of sleep. Some people thrive with six hours and some people can barely function with eight. It’s all about finding out what your body needs to function and trying to make sure your schedule allows for you to get that.
