Just south of Gracetown in the southwest of Western Australia, I found a beach at the end of Big Rock Rd. I was looking for a spot out of the wind, and this beach had plenty of options.
I gave myself heaps of time to explore the beach and found a few promising spots. However, I noticed that the clouds were building to the south and were moving over the ocean.
Eventually, I decided to position the camera on a large rock looking out to the sea. I was pleased with the composition I found, with rocks in the lower third of the image and larger boulders framing the scene to the left and right.
With the composition set up, all I needed was a wave to come in and push the foam water through the rocks to capture some nice movement and contrast in the foreground, but it was like someone had turned off the waves suddenly.
With fading light and colours in the clouds, it came down to just one shot.

Can relate to clouds at the coast not being as I hoped or as the forecast/apps said. But you worked the scene like a pro as always mate, love the shots you got, the portrait one at the end was lovely, and when you capture “that wave”, the textures in the foreground are just awesome! Really appreciate your effort with making these videos, the broll is exceptional.

Well done Andrew! It’s really good to see you walking around the area to find different compositions for the weather conditions you had! And I must say I enjoyed the compositions you captured! I really do respect your drive to not give up and try out new things 👏👏👏

As you said, 'be prepared', that has to be the takeaway from this vlog along with the importance of working the scene. Nice captures, overall I slightly preferred the first shot over the second. Cheers!

Cheer John, I think this is an excellent location, with plenty of options. I'll add this to the list of places I'll be returning to when I'm down that way next. After viewing the drone footage, there looks like there might be a few more spots a little further south that could be good to check out.

Those huge rocks are amazing. I'd love to know the geology!

Cheers Scott, yeah I love shooting seascape in this area because of the massive granite rocks you get along the coast. It's a great idea to add a little of the geology into the vlogs, I'll consider how to do that in future videos, thanks!

beautiful images Andrew as your patience paid off for you. One of my frustrations is having the composition and then at the last minute the cloud snuffing out the light but I guess that's what keeps us going back out

Cheers Jimmy, I had made sure I arrived at the beach with plenty of time to explore and find a composition. I set up my camera and with fingers crossed I was hoping the light would do the right thing. With all my attention on the clouds, I was surprised that the waves seemed to have stopped. I was starting the panic, but you can see the relief on my face when I captured the shot on camera. Thanks mate! 👍

Oh the wind in WA . . .. and the clouds being not so helpful at sunset . . . . .sigh. Still got a couple of great images despite all that.

Very timely Andrew; I am starting a course called 'Water Water Everywhere' on Monday so I am expecting to be doing some seascapes and/or river scenes in the coming weeks. I will be ready for that one chance, hopefully! Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for that Steve. This sounds like an interesting course. Any scene with water is often quite dynamic, so it's good to ready at a moment's notice. 😄

Hi Sharon, thanks for that. Yes, the carpark can be easily accessed with a 2WD. I included the 4WD footage for a little dramatic effect 🤣 Definitely a good spot to check out!
