If you are under 800, you can surpass it by playing safe, fundamental moves.
    1. Develop all your pieces before trying to attack (unless there's a tactic that will immediately win material).
    2. Keep your pieces protected. Unsafe pieces become targets. Every move should aim to make progress whilst keeping your pieces safe.
    3. Always check for threats, particularly with the opponent's queen. Your eyes should be trained for B+Q and N+Q checkmates.
    4. Don't trade active pieces for inactive pieces, and do trade inactive pieces for active pieces.
    5. Keep training tactics through puzzles. Puzzles are the way chess players maintain and improve their vision.

I learned quite a bit from this. What I run into the most is instead of holding tension on the board the opponents are always trigger happy about trading pieces and it leaves us both with very few pieces to work with. That being said, seeing how you pin pieces giving yourself time to develop faster than the opponent was a huge help.

Started playing chess today after seeing a video of you and your parents. 40 years ago when I was a little kid the game was explained to me, but didn't play it much back then. Probably about 10 times. I played 4 games against the computer and won 3 and played 1 draw. First won at level 250 rating, second won at 400 rating, third draw at 550 and fourth won at 1000. :-) Very curious now at which level my limit (barrier) is. Last game was the most fun. In the beginning I kinda messed up, but eventually I found a way to turn the game around. I lost the queen very fast, but so did the computer. It wasn´t against the clock. I am sure that would have been way more difficult. Took my time with each move. It's fun to see the difference in playing of your parents. Your dad plays also more noisy on the board. Your mom is more gentle with the placing the pieces and with hitting the clock. Your dad wins alot of time reaching for the clock. His arm movement is fast while your mom moves her arm in a relaxed movement.

I can confirm that move works every time against 500 and below players. I’ve lost about 10xs in a row now to it. 👍

    Great video. Thank you Anna.
It really bugs me when someone abandons instead of resigning. I lose many more games than I win, but I always thank my opponents for a good game. That last one played as well as he could for his level-s/he should have been proud of that and resigned with good grace. No shame in losing to you like that.🤷‍♂️

You can’t really blame them from abandoning the game when they’re such a low lvl and they’re going up against you.

I think you should do the same thing with other rating groups :D This was a really clever and effective way to teach the elementary principles at heuristic level with a live example, rule of thumb in a practical demonstration that touches the main bases just to get the very basic framework in place, perfect for people who know the moves and 'get' chess and whom you artfully spared any mention of chess openings at outset. It want to see what comes next as we go higher to 1200, 1600 and beyond ._.

Extremely helpful. It has been a while since I have played. I liked and employed you lesson on protecting your pieces and gaining the center board position. It works! I win. Thx. Will continue to follow and learn,

Also, it's quite a confidence builder for me as a beginner, to see your intentional sacrifice of a queen to set up a checkmate. As a beginner, loosing a queen still feels scary even though I lost one the other day intentionally, and won!!!

Those two duplicate games were just too funny and impossible to ask for. It was also a great way to demonstrate your points very well by driving the same point home about pins. I'm in a game now and pinned, but I've played this person before and even in a weak position, I still feel I'll win as one small mistake on his side will allow me to clear the pin and be back in a superior position. Thanks for the great tips. I'll watch this several times.

It's funny how long it takes to actually become good at chess. I am working on making my opening moves pawns to center, knights, bishops, castle, then move queen/rooks. These videos help A LOT!!! Thank you!!! My chess game is getting better. Little by little. BTW, it's funny that I'm finding I either win or lose based on how many mistakes either I make or my opponent makes and whether or not we can recover from those mistakes.

6:08 sacrifice the dark square bishop and go rook e8 the only way to escape the check is to lose queen for the bishop
