  • BYD, the Chinese automotive powerhouse, has unveiled its latest creation: the Shark, a new plug-in-hybrid pickup truck.
The Shark will initially be available only in China. However, a new manufacturing plant planned for Mexico might open up possibilities for it to be sold in other regions, including the United States.
Under the hood, the Shark features a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine paired with two electric motors. BYD claims the combined output is 430 horsepower. While they haven't provided a torque figure, the Shark's towing capacity is rated at 5512 pounds, and it can handle a maximum payload of 1841 pounds. Acceleration from 0 to 62 mph is estimated to take 5.7 seconds.
The range of the Shark is particularly noteworthy for a plug-in-hybrid pickup. Given BYD's status as the world's largest electric vehicle manufacturer, it's not entirely unexpected. The Shark can travel 62 miles on electric power alone. When combining a full tank of gas with a fully charged battery, it can cover more than 520 miles. Additionally, it supports fast-charging through its CCS1 port, which is a significant advantage for a plug-in hybrid.
